Keep the original VMware VM and a tested backup until application checks, monitoring, backups and rollback have all passed. OVF export and disk-level conversion remain useful when the integrated importer cannot handle the source storage or when you need finer control over disk formats and virtual hardware.

Choose the migration method
There are three practical paths. The integrated importer is usually the least manual for supported ESXi sources because it copies the VM into Proxmox while mapping much of its configuration. OVF export creates portable files and gives you a clear file-based rollback point. Manual disk migration provides the most control, but you must recreate the Proxmox VM hardware and validate every boot and guest-driver dependency.

The importer is not a live replication system. It is a copy operation, so plan the source shutdown interval, destination capacity, transfer path and a rollback window even when the Proxmox workflow is used.

Preflight checks before copying a VM
Inventory the guest and its dependencies
- Record the VM’s operating system, virtual CPU count, memory, disk sizes, disk order, controller type, firmware mode (BIOS or UEFI), EFI disk, boot order, virtual NICs, MAC addresses, VLAN requirements and serial or console devices.
- List application services, scheduled jobs, monitoring checks, backup jobs, DHCP reservations, licensing tied to a MAC address and any external systems that expect the VM’s current IP or hostname.
- Confirm that the destination Proxmox cluster has enough storage and that its CPU model policy can run the guest on every node where it may be placed.
Resolve importer limitations
- Snapshots: A datastore with snapshots can make an import significantly slower. Consolidate or remove snapshots only after checking the backup and rollback plan.
- vSAN: The documented importer does not directly import VMs whose disks are backed by VMware vSAN. Move those disks to another supported storage location first.
- Encryption: Encrypted VM disks, including disks protected by a storage-policy encryption setting, cannot be imported until encryption is removed. Preserve the decryption keys and document the change.
- Datastore names: A datastore name containing special characters such as
+can cause import failure. Rename the datastore using the documented workaround, then retry. - vTPM: VMware virtual TPM state cannot currently be migrated to Proxmox VE. Record any manual decryption or recovery keys and plan a replacement TPM configuration if the guest requires one.
Make a rollback-ready copy
Power off the source VM before copying so its disks represent one consistent state. Keep the VMware VM, a tested backup and the migration notes. Do not delete or repurpose the source until the replacement has passed boot, network, application, monitoring and backup tests.

Method 1: import directly from ESXi with Proxmox VE
Use this workflow for supported ESXi 6.5 through 8.0 sources. Perform the first run with a representative non-production VM so you can verify the guest-driver and network plan.

Bring the host or cluster to Proxmox VE 8 or later and apply current updates. Recheck that the destination storage has room for every imported disk and any conversion overhead.
- Add the ESXi source. In the Proxmox web interface, open Datacenter → Storage → Add and choose the ESXi import-source option. Enter the ESXi address and administrator credentials.
- Handle the certificate. Trust the ESXi certificate or select the certificate-verification option documented for your environment. Do not bypass verification casually on an untrusted network.
- Inspect the source inventory. Select the source storage and confirm that the expected datastores and VMs appear. If the VM is absent, stop and resolve permissions, datastore visibility or source compatibility before attempting a copy.
- Open the import dialog. Select the VM and click Import. Choose destination disk storage for each disk and select the Proxmox network bridge that provides the required VLAN or network reachability.
- Review the generated hardware. Before starting the guest, check the disk order, firmware, EFI disk, boot order, CPU model, memory, SCSI controller, NIC model, bridge, MAC address and any serial device.
- Start and validate. Boot the imported VM only after the hardware and guest-driver plan is recorded. Use the validation checklist below, and keep the VMware copy available until acceptance is complete.
Import duration is governed by the amount of data that must be copied and the throughput of the source, network and destination storage. Snapshots, encrypted disks and unsupported vSAN placement must be resolved before this workflow can succeed.

Method 2: export an OVF and import its disks
OVF is useful when you need portable files, a file-based staging area or a fallback to the integrated importer. Export the VM while it is powered off with VMware’s ovftool from ESXi or vCenter, then transfer the resulting OVF and VMDK files to a location Proxmox can read.
Export and import the VM definition
- Shut down the source guest cleanly and verify that the final backup completed.
- Run
ovftoolagainst the ESXi or vCenter inventory and export the VM to a directory containing the OVF descriptor and its VMDK files. - Copy the export to the Proxmox host or an accessible staging location, preserving file names and permissions.
- Create a Proxmox VM ID and import the OVF definition with
qm importovf {vmid} {VM name}.ovf {target storage}. - Review the resulting VM hardware before first boot. OVF preserves an exported definition, but Proxmox still needs the correct bridge, boot mode, controller and guest drivers.
For file-based target storage, documented formats include raw, VMDK and qcow2. Qcow2 is QEMU/KVM’s native format. If you need to import a VMDK separately, use qm disk import {target VMID} {vmdk file} {target storage}, then attach the resulting volume to the appropriate controller and set its boot order.
Method 3: perform a disk-level or manual migration
Use this path when the integrated importer is unsuitable or when you need to redesign the VM’s virtual hardware. Move or convert the powered-off disks, create a matching Proxmox VM, attach the disks and reconstruct the CPU, firmware, controller, NIC and boot settings from your inventory.
- Create the Proxmox VM with the intended VM ID, memory, CPU count and firmware mode.
- Convert or copy each source disk into a Proxmox-supported target format and storage location. Preserve disk order so the guest sees its boot and data volumes correctly.
- Attach the converted disks to the selected SCSI, SATA or IDE controller. Start with the controller expected by the guest if driver availability is uncertain.
- Add the virtual NIC, choose the destination bridge and preserve the source MAC only when DHCP reservations, licensing or application configuration require it.
- Set the boot disk and boot order, add an EFI disk when the guest uses UEFI, and verify console access before starting.
- Boot the VM, install or enable the required guest drivers, then test storage, network and application behavior.
Guest hardware and driver decisions after import
CPU model and cluster compatibility
Select a CPU model that is compatible with the Proxmox cluster. Use host only when every node that may run the VM has matching CPU capabilities. Otherwise choose a common generic x86-64 model so live migration and recovery do not depend on one node’s instruction set.

Disk controller and VirtIO storage
virtio-scsi-single is an appropriate SCSI controller when the guest has the required VirtIO drivers. A migrated guest that lacks those drivers may fail to boot if its disk bus changes too soon. For Windows, begin with the documented IDE or SATA fallback when necessary, install and validate the VirtIO drivers inside the guest, and only then switch the controller or disk bus.
Network adapter and bridge
Prefer a VirtIO network adapter when the guest supports it because it has lower virtualization overhead. For a guest without VirtIO drivers, use an older emulated adapter temporarily, install the driver, and then change the adapter deliberately. Verify the Proxmox bridge, VLAN path, IP configuration and firewall rules. If the network design depends on the old address, preserve the expected MAC or update the DHCP reservation rather than allowing an unintended lease.
Firmware, EFI and boot order
Match the source’s BIOS-versus-UEFI mode. A UEFI guest may also need its EFI disk placed on the destination storage and its boot entry recreated. Check the boot disk order and use the Proxmox console to correct firmware or boot-loader errors before changing application settings.

Guest agent, time and services
Install or configure the QEMU guest agent where appropriate. Confirm time synchronization, hostname and DNS behavior, then check every application service that was recorded during inventory. A successful operating-system boot is not an application acceptance test.

Validation checklist before production cutover
- Boot the guest repeatedly enough to confirm that the selected firmware, controller and boot order are stable.
- Confirm that every expected disk is present, mounted and writable, and check storage performance against the workload’s needs.
- Verify the NIC model, bridge, VLAN, IP address, DNS, routes, firewall policy and DHCP reservation or static configuration.
- Check application logs, service dependencies, scheduled jobs, monitoring alarms and external integrations.
- Confirm that the QEMU guest agent and time synchronization operate correctly.
- Run a Proxmox backup and verify that the backup job completes and can be located for restore.
- Test console and emergency access so you are not dependent on the production network during a failure.
- Perform an application-level test with the owner of the service, not only an operating-system ping or login.
- Rehearse the rollback: define who stops the Proxmox VM, how the VMware VM is powered on, how DNS or DHCP is restored and how duplicate IP or MAC use is prevented.
Common failures and recovery actions
The VM is missing from the import list
Confirm that the ESXi source storage was added under Datacenter → Storage, that the credentials can read the datastore and inventory, and that the VM is powered off and visible from the selected source storage. Resolve certificate or permissions errors before retrying.
Import is unexpectedly slow
Check for snapshots on the source datastore, available destination capacity, source-to-Proxmox network throughput and destination storage latency. Snapshot-heavy datastores can make imports significantly slower; consolidate them only within the approved backup and rollback plan.
The source uses vSAN or encrypted disks
Move vSAN-backed disks to another supported storage location before importing. Remove disk or storage-policy encryption only through an approved key-managed process; an encrypted disk cannot be imported until it is decrypted.

The guest boots to an inaccessible disk
Power it off, attach the boot disk to the controller expected by the guest, verify BIOS or UEFI mode and EFI-disk placement, and check boot order. For Windows, use IDE or SATA temporarily if VirtIO storage drivers are not installed, then install and validate VirtIO before moving to a higher-performance controller.
The guest has no network
Check that the NIC is attached to the correct bridge and VLAN, then inspect the guest’s adapter driver and IP configuration. If the operating system cannot use VirtIO yet, use an emulated NIC long enough to install the driver. Update DHCP reservations or preserve the required MAC address to avoid assigning the wrong address.
Datastore-name or certificate errors block the job
Rename a datastore containing special characters such as + and retry. For certificate errors, use the documented certificate-trust or verification setting only after confirming the ESXi endpoint and network path.
Cutover, rollback and decommissioning
Schedule the final cutover after the test migration and acceptance checks. Stop the VMware VM, confirm that the final copy or backup is complete, start the Proxmox VM, and run the application test with monitoring enabled. Keep the VMware VM powered off but recoverable throughout the agreed rollback window.

Correct the Proxmox configuration and repeat the test with a fresh copy rather than silently mixing disk states.
Only after the rollback window expires, backups are verified and service owners approve the result should you remove the VMware inventory entry, old snapshots and temporary export files. Update diagrams, asset records, monitoring, backup policies, disaster-recovery procedures and operating documentation to reflect the Proxmox VM.
The Bottom Line
For ESXi 6.5–8.0, use Proxmox VE’s integrated importer after updating to Proxmox VE 8 or later, but treat it as a controlled copy rather than a live migration. Test with a representative VM, resolve snapshots, vSAN, encryption and vTPM limitations, validate firmware, controllers, VirtIO, networking and applications, and retain a tested VMware rollback until the new VM is accepted.
