Move or rebuild the hosted-desktop service as its own project, then test which existing PCs and laptops can securely and reliably connect to it. Keep endpoints that meet your requirements; replace only those that do not.
Can you use existing PCs with virtual desktops?
Often, yes. The virtual desktop service and the device used to access it are separate parts of the deployment. A suitable PC may continue running its existing operating system and desktop client, or an organization may convert it into a managed access endpoint. Neither option guarantees that every device, peripheral, or user workflow will work.
For Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD), Microsoft lists supported client options and thin-client partners, but that list does not establish compatibility for every general-purpose PC or attached device. Check the intended client, hardware, authentication method, peripherals, and network conditions together. Microsoft’s client guidance is at Connect to Azure Virtual Desktop.
Plan the desktop migration separately from endpoint replacement
A move to a hosted desktop platform is not necessarily a lift-and-shift of the existing VDI control plane. Microsoft says AVD uses a different, PaaS-based control plane from traditional VDI and has no direct migration path from other VDI platforms. An AVD deployment requires new host pools and session hosts; teams must separately decide whether to migrate or recreate desktop images, user profiles, and applications. Before choosing the target, compare it with the current environment. Azure Virtual Desktop and Citrix DaaS have distinct requirements and capabilities, so assess the workload and architecture rather than assuming one destination fits every organization. Microsoft’s planning guidance covers planning a virtual desktop migration.
A practical migration sequence
1. Inventory users, applications, and dependencies
Document desktop types and user groups, applications, identity dependencies, profiles, peripherals, network locations, and any requirements for audio, video, smart cards, or multiple displays. This gives the team a basis for both the target desktop design and endpoint testing.

2. Select and design the target service
Work through identity, network paths, storage, host pools, monitoring, and application delivery. Include the locations from which users connect, and assess the target platform’s requirements against the workloads you inventoried. Microsoft recommends a workload assessment and review of landing-zone requirements in its virtual desktop migration planning guidance.
3. Decide what to move or rebuild
For AVD, plan for new host pools and session hosts rather than assuming the existing VDI control plane can be transferred directly. Make explicit decisions about images, profiles, and applications: each may need migration, recreation, or redesign. Treat these as desktop-service work, not as reasons to replace client devices by default.

4. Test endpoint reuse on representative devices
Select a sample that reflects the age, hardware, locations, and user needs in the fleet. Test the intended client or endpoint operating system, sign-in and identity flow, displays, audio and video, smart cards or other peripherals, and real network conditions. A device should count as reusable only if it meets the organization’s security, support, compatibility, and user-experience requirements.
Existing x86-64 PCs and laptops may be optimized as managed cloud-workspace endpoints using an endpoint platform such as IGEL, according to the vendor. Treat this as an option to evaluate, not a blanket compatibility guarantee: confirm support for the specific hardware and peripherals in your environment. See IGEL.

5. Run a proof of concept, then roll out in waves
Use a proof of concept before the first deployment. Check application behavior, user experience, security controls, support workflows, and endpoint performance under representative conditions. Microsoft’s planning guidance states: “The process also requires a proof of concept before the first deployment.” Once the pilot meets agreed criteria, expand in stages and replace endpoints only when they fail those criteria.

There is no universal cost or reuse rate established for this decision. Estimate costs for your workloads and fleet instead of assuming that retaining endpoints will produce a particular saving.

When endpoint replacement is justified
Replace an endpoint when it cannot meet a necessary requirement after a reasonable assessment—for example, if the device cannot run a supported access method, fails security or support standards, or cannot handle a user’s required peripherals or connection conditions. If it passes the pilot and can be managed to the required standard, the desktop migration alone is not a reason to buy a thin client.
Microsoft’s Cloud Adoption Framework migration and planning pages carry a notice that they are deprecated and scheduled for removal on October 30, 2026, and point readers toward current Azure Virtual Desktop architecture and product documentation. Verify current requirements in product documentation when designing a deployment.
