Hosts and groups are imported, but encrypted passwords are not; plan to enter those again. VsTerm says private-key file paths are retained for public-key authentication, so verify that the referenced key is still available before relying on it.
What the WindTerm import brings across
VsTerm’s project documentation describes this as importing host configuration, not transferring an entire WindTerm setup. It says hosts and groups are imported, including groups up to two folder levels. It does not promise to carry over every preference, tab arrangement, key-store entry, or saved workflow.

The documented input is either WindTerm .wind data or a profiles/ folder. If you are unsure which applies to your WindTerm installation, locate the data you intend to import and choose the matching format in VsTerm’s importer. VsTerm’s README lists WindTerm alongside other supported import sources.
Import WindTerm sessions into VsTerm
- Open VsTerm and choose File → Import from Others.
- Select WindTerm as the source.
- Choose the applicable
.winddata orprofiles/folder. - After import, inspect the host tree and groups. In particular, check nested groups if your organization depends on more than two folder levels.
- Connect to a low-risk host first and confirm that the imported connection settings work before relying on the new setup for routine work.
Passwords and SSH keys need separate checks
Encrypted passwords
VsTerm says encrypted WindTerm passwords are not copied. Expect to enter a password again when you connect; the import should not be treated as a way to migrate saved secrets.

Private-key authentication
VsTerm says the private-key file path is retained, which can preserve public-key authentication when the key remains accessible at that path. Check that the file exists on the machine running VsTerm and that its permissions and any passphrase setup work in the new environment. The importer’s documentation does not say it validates key availability or permissions.
Check that VsTerm fits the work you do in WindTerm
Both projects describe SSH and file-transfer workflows, but their documentation emphasizes different details. Treat these as documented capabilities, not as a verified head-to-head test: the available sources do not establish an independent migration test or current comparative performance result.

If your daily work depends on a specific proxy, jump-host, forwarding, or authentication configuration, verify that exact case in the VsTerm build you plan to use. Likewise, try the file-transfer and operations panels you rely on rather than assuming that similar workflow labels mean identical behavior.

Recreate anything outside the documented import
Once the first test connection succeeds, review your WindTerm setup for items beyond imported hosts and groups. Recreate or verify preferences, tab layouts, stored credentials, and other workflows as needed; VsTerm’s import documentation does not guarantee their transfer.

Also check whether VsTerm currently has a build for your target operating system. Its README says packages are not Microsoft/Apple notarized and an operating-system warning may appear. Confirm the current installer and applicable platform guidance before installing.
