How to Migrate a Website from Shared Hosting to a VPS: Step-by-Step

A staged migration protects your website data and gives you time to test the VPS before changing DNS. Follow the checklist for files, databases, email, and cutover.

Move your website to a VPS in stages: inventory the services on the old host, back up files and databases, prepare and test the new server, then change DNS. Keep the shared-hosting account active during the transition so you can recover missing data or restore service if the new site has a problem.

Before you migrate: identify what must move

A website migration can involve more than its visible pages. Make an inventory before choosing a transfer method; the exact items depend on your hosting panel and application.

  • Domains, subdomains, and document roots.
  • Website files and databases, including database names and credentials.
  • Runtime and software requirements, such as PHP versions and other application dependencies.
  • Email accounts, routing, and any mail data stored with the host.
  • DNS records, SSL certificates, cron jobs, scheduled tasks, and external API or service integrations.
  • How you control DNS and what the old provider supports: a full backup, panel-to-panel transfer, SFTP/SSH access, or manual exports.

Confirm who manages authoritative DNS. Your hosting provider may not control the nameservers or be able to make DNS changes for you.

Choose a migration method that matches your access

The right route depends on the source and destination panels and the privileges you have. A provider’s migration workflow is not a universal procedure, so check both hosts’ current instructions before starting.

Method When it fits Important limits
Panel transfer tool Both servers use compatible panels, and the tool supports the source and destination. Features and transferred data vary by panel and version. Check the current omissions list and compare services after transfer.
Manual file and database transfer You can export or download the site data and import it on the VPS, but a supported account transfer is unavailable or unsuitable. You must update destination database settings and recreate any configuration that did not transfer.
Provider-assisted migration Your provider offers migration help for your particular source, destination, and account. Confirm supported panels, access requirements, and what is included. Do not assume every setting or service will transfer exactly.

If you are moving a cPanel account

cPanel’s WHM Transfer Tool copies cPanel accounts, packages, and configurations between cPanel/WHM servers. It requires root access or sudo/su privileges. If you only have an account login, look for a separate account transfer or restore option offered by your provider; the WHM tool is not an account-only interface. The official tool documentation was marked for versions 130 through latest when checked on July 27, 2026, so confirm the instructions for the version you are using: cPanel Transfer Tool documentation.

For that tool, custom DNS zone templates are not transferred. Other cases may require review, including custom DNS records, IPv6 behavior, database-name collisions, two-factor authentication, and some calendar, contact, or task data across specified version combinations. Use cPanel’s current omissions and requirements list rather than assuming an account copy includes every service: Transfer Tool documentation.

If the source uses Plesk or DirectAdmin and the destination uses cPanel

cPanel describes a limited migration service for supported Plesk and DirectAdmin sources into cPanel/WHM. Its requirements and exceptions differ by source panel; details may not transfer exactly. Examples include regenerated DNS zones that need custom-record review, source package limits that may become unlimited and need adjustment, some mail data or settings that may not transfer, and custom server software configuration that must be replicated. Check the applicable source-specific requirements before relying on the service: cPanel migration service information.

Step 1: Prepare the VPS

Choose an administration path you can support: manage the server yourself or arrange managed assistance. Confirm the operating system, control panel or web stack, application dependencies, and server resources suit the site. Requirements for a specific migration service do not automatically apply to every VPS. For example, cPanel’s migration service has its own root-access, supported-operating-system, and database-version prerequisites.

Complete the provider’s initial setup, install and configure the selected panel or web stack, and create the destination domain or account. If using cPanel’s WHM Transfer Tool, review its current warnings. Do not interrupt server processes or run system updates during a transfer.

Step 2: Back up files and databases

Make independent copies before transferring anything. Keep them outside the old hosting account when possible, and confirm that the archives and database exports are usable before treating them as your recovery plan.

  • 16TB (4 x 4TB) 7.2K 6Gb/s SATA 3.5" HDDs in RAID
  • Hard drives and memory upgrades included separately NOT installed, installation required.

Available methods depend on the provider. For example, you may be able to use a downloadable hosting backup and database export, or FTP to retrieve files and phpMyAdmin to export a database. Treat those as examples, not instructions that apply to every panel. Follow the source and destination hosts’ documentation for your setup.

Step 3: Transfer and restore the site

  1. Use a supported panel migration tool if the source and destination qualify. Otherwise, transfer the website files and export the database using the panels’ documented procedures.
  2. Import the database on the VPS and update the application’s configuration with the destination database name, username, and password.
  3. Recreate settings or services that the transfer does not include. Compare the source and destination for DNS records, mail configuration and data, package limits, software configuration, scheduled tasks, and certificates.
  4. Check file permissions and rewrite rules such as .htaccess. Also look for absolute URLs or paths that still point to the old environment.

cPanel’s migration documentation notes that transfer details can differ and some items require manual handling. Its listed exceptions are specific to the applicable panel and version, not a claim that all migrations lose the same data.

Step 4: Test the VPS before changing DNS

Verify the destination while the public domain still points to the old host. A temporary URL can help if the application supports it. Domain-dependent applications, including some WordPress setups, may not behave correctly that way; a local hosts-file mapping can let you test the site against the VPS IP without changing public DNS. Restore your hosts file after testing.

  • Open representative pages and check for missing files, errors, or unexpected redirects.
  • Test login and administration, forms, database-backed pages, and application integrations.
  • Check file permissions, rewrite rules, and HTTPS behavior.
  • Confirm cron jobs and other scheduled tasks are configured on the VPS.
  • Verify email sending and receiving if email is part of the migration.

Do not switch DNS until the destination works for the parts of the site and services you rely on. cPanel’s testing guidance covers temporary URLs, hosts-file testing, and common issues such as file permissions, .htaccess, and absolute links: cPanel: test a site before changing DNS.

Step 5: Lower TTL and point the domain to the VPS

If you can edit the authoritative DNS zone in advance, lower the relevant record TTL before cutover. cPanel recommends a temporary TTL of 300 seconds in its migration guide and describes 3600 seconds as the standard TTL to restore afterward. These are cPanel’s recommendations and reference values, not a guarantee of how quickly every DNS provider or resolver will update.

After testing, change the required A or AAAA records to the VPS address, or change nameservers if that is the correct method for your DNS setup. Make the change at the authoritative DNS provider. cPanel advises switching soon after a verified transfer and checking that the domain resolves to the new IP. Its guidance is available at cPanel’s DNS and testing guide.

DNS caching means some visitors may continue reaching the old server for a time. Check current DNS results rather than assuming the change is complete after a particular interval.

Step 6: Verify cutover and keep a rollback route

Check that the domain resolves to the VPS address from more than one resolver or location when practical, then test the website and email again. If a lookup still shows the old address, that location may not have received the DNS update yet.

Keep the old account and its data available while the VPS stabilizes. During DNS transition, visitors, form submissions, database updates, or incoming email may still reach the old host. Identify any changes made there and reconcile them before retiring the account. Once the new setup is stable, restore the TTL to its previous value if you lowered it.

What can go wrong—and what to check

  • The site loads but pages or assets are broken: Check permissions, rewrite rules, and absolute links or paths that refer to the old server.
  • The application cannot connect to its database: Confirm that the destination database was imported and that the application configuration uses the new database name, username, and password.
  • Email is missing or stops working: Compare mail accounts, routing, DNS records, and transferred mail data. Panel migration tools may not carry every mail-related setting or data item.
  • DNS lookups show the old server: Check the authoritative records and allow for resolver caching; do not delete the source account while traffic or mail may still reach it.
  • A cPanel transfer omits a setting: Review the current tool’s migration-specific exceptions and recreate required DNS, authentication, calendar/contact/task, or custom software settings as applicable.

Keep the source host until you have confirmed the destination is serving the expected content and accounted for writes and messages that may have landed on the old system. cPanel’s migration guidance warns that traffic can continue reaching the original server until DNS changes take effect: cPanel DNS testing guidance.
