Yes—you can move a Palworld world from PC Game Pass or the Microsoft Store to a dedicated server, but not by copying the visible save files directly. Game Pass stores worlds in a Windows Gaming Services (WGS) container. You must extract that container into Palworld’s normal save layout, upload the complete world folder, and set the server’s DedicatedServerName to the exact folder name.

Back up both sides before changing anything. Xbox console saves cannot be downloaded directly for this migration route, and a co-op world may require a separate player-file repair so the former host keeps the correct character.

What this migration supports—and what it does not
The procedure applies to a Palworld save created by the PC Xbox app/Game Pass or Microsoft Store edition. Those saves can be converted and loaded by a dedicated server. The server then runs the world independently of any player’s game client; Pocketpair describes this as hosting a server “without hosting the world from the game client” (server guide, version 0.5.0).

World data and player identity are separate concerns. A converted world can load with its map, bases and Palbox intact while the former co-op host appears as a new or incomplete character. Plan for that possibility before inviting players back.

Prepare before touching the save
Use a maintenance window when nobody is playing. You need access to the Windows PC that owns the Game Pass save, administrator access to the server files, and enough free storage for at least two complete copies of the source and destination saves.
- Exit Palworld completely; do not leave it suspended in the Xbox app.
- Stop the dedicated server service or process, if it already exists.
- Create separate, dated backups of the complete Game Pass source and any existing server save. Keep one copy outside both save directories.
- Record the current Palworld game version and dedicated-server version. Keep them aligned during conversion and first launch.
- Decide whether the server will be self-hosted or managed. File access, backup tools, CPU/RAM/storage performance, port management and platform support differ between those routes.
Never test a conversion on your only copy. If the server starts a blank world, stop it before new data is written; a new save can make it harder to identify the original folder.
Step 1: Locate the PC Game Pass WGS save
On Windows, the Xbox app/Microsoft Store edition stores Palworld data beneath:

Finding the correct container
- Close Palworld and the Xbox app, then open File Explorer.
- Paste the path above into the address bar. If Windows hides
AppData, using the address bar avoids having to browse to hidden folders manually. - Copy the whole
wgsdirectory, or the complete container associated with the Palworld profile, to your backup location. - If several containers exist, note their modified dates and keep all of them until you have confirmed which one contains the intended world.
Step 2: Convert WGS data into a Palworld world folder
A dedicated server expects the normal Palworld save layout. Use a currently compatible converter such as XGP Save Extractor or PalworldSaveTools, following that tool’s present instructions and release notes. Converter interfaces change, so do not rely on an old screenshot or assume that a file with an opaque name is a world by itself.
A successful export normally produces a folder containing:

Conversion checks
- Work from the backed-up WGS copy, not the live folder.
- Run the converter and select the complete WGS container, not a single blob.
- Open the output and verify that
Level.sav,LevelMeta.savand aPlayersdirectory are present. - Keep
LocalData.savwhen available, and copy the complete output folder to a separate staging directory. - Give the exported world folder a simple name using letters, numbers or underscores. Record the spelling and capitalization; the server setting must match it exactly.
If the converter reports damaged or incomplete data, stop and restore from the WGS backup. Do not compensate by mixing files from unrelated exports.
Step 3: Install and initialize the dedicated server
Install the official Palworld Dedicated Server through Steam or SteamCMD. Start it once before replacing any save. That first run creates the directory tree and configuration files you need, including the save location and platform-specific settings path.

Where the server files live
On Windows, the main configuration file is:

Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/Stop the server after the initialization run. A running process can keep files open and overwrite the folder you are trying to replace.
Resource and network requirements
Pocketpair recommends a 4-core CPU and 16 GB of memory for a dedicated server. Fast storage is important; the official guidance warns that low-performance storage can corrupt saved data. UDP port 8211 is the default game port, although your configuration and hosting environment may use another value.
- Reserve enough disk space for the live save, rotating backups and temporary conversion files.
- Open and forward the configured UDP port through the host firewall and router when self-hosting.
- Use the server’s platform-specific
PalWorldSettings.ini; editing a similarly named file in another directory has no effect.
Step 4: Copy the converted world to the server
- Confirm that the dedicated server is stopped.
- Open the newly created
Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/directory. - Copy the entire converted world folder into that directory. The resulting path should look like
Pal/Saved/SaveGames/0/YourWorldFolder/. - Keep the folder’s
Playersdirectory and every other exported file together. Do not flatten the contents directly into the0directory. - If a destination world already exists, move it to a dated backup location rather than deleting it.
The folder name is now the identifier the server must be told to load. A spelling or case mismatch causes the server to create a different, empty world.
Step 5: Point the server at the migrated folder
Open the server’s GameUserSettings.ini (in the same saved configuration area created during initialization) and set DedicatedServerName to the exact migrated folder name, including capitalization. For example:

DedicatedServerName=YourWorldFolderDo not include the full path, a trailing slash or quotation marks unless the current configuration format specifically requires them. Compare the value character by character with the directory under SaveGames/0.

Keep the game client and server on matching versions; a version mismatch can look like a failed conversion even when the files are correct.
Configuration mistakes that produce a blank world
- The converted folder was copied to
SaveGamesinstead ofSaveGames/0. - The folder was flattened, so
Level.savis one level too high. DedicatedServerNameuses a different case, an old name or an accidental space.- The server is reading
LinuxServersettings while you editedWindowsServer, or vice versa. WorldOption.savor stale files from another world are taking precedence.
Step 6: Handle the former co-op host’s character
Co-op saves associate characters with player files and local data. A dedicated server has a different identity context, so the world can load correctly while the original host’s inventory, level or guild membership does not.
First test the migration with the server stopped and your backups preserved. If the map and bases are present but the host is missing progress, use a current player-transfer or player-conversion workflow appropriate to your Palworld version. The exact procedure varies by tool and version, but the safe pattern is consistent:
- Stop the server and make a fresh backup of the migrated world.
- Identify the source host’s player file in the exported
Playersdirectory and the new server-side player identifier. - Use a compatible transfer utility or documented conversion method to map the source character to the destination identity.
- Preserve the original files separately; never overwrite the only copy while experimenting.
- Restart and verify level, inventory, equipped items, Palbox ownership, guild membership and map discovery.
Do not copy a random player file merely because its timestamp is newest. Player IDs, platform accounts and local data must correspond to the person joining the server.

- Start the dedicated server with the migrated folder and matching version.
- Join from the intended platform account rather than testing only from the server host machine.
- Check the map and fast-travel points, every important base, Palbox contents, storage, inventory and guild membership.
- Have each returning player join and confirm that the correct character loads.
- Create a small test change, such as moving an item, then stop and restart the server to confirm that saves persist.
If a new world appears, stop immediately. Do not build, capture Pals or allow an automatic save cycle. Recheck the destination path, folder nesting, exact DedicatedServerName, configuration file location, WorldOption.sav removal and version alignment, then restore the untouched backup if necessary.

Choosing self-hosting versus managed hosting
Both routes can load the same converted folder. The practical difference is who controls the machine and who performs routine operations.

Whichever route you choose, download an independent copy of the migrated save before making large configuration changes. A hosting dashboard is not a substitute for a backup you control.
Backups and ongoing maintenance
- Keep the untouched WGS backup, the converted staging folder and the live server backup as separate sets.
- Back up before every game or server version update.
- Use the server’s documented backup-save options and periodically test a restore on a non-production copy.
- Label backups with the date, Palworld version, server version and whether player repair has been applied.
- After a player transfer, have that player verify inventory, Palbox access, guild membership and map state before deleting any old file.
A migration is complete only when the world, each player’s identity and a restart test all pass. Keep the original backups until the group has played successfully for several sessions.
