The safest general-purpose migration is a logical dump and restore: create the database on the destination, export the source with mysqldump, transfer the dump over an encrypted connection, restore it, then verify schema, data, accounts, and application behavior before changing the application’s connection settings. For very large databases or near-zero-downtime cutovers, use parallel loading, replication, or MySQL’s Clone plugin instead.

Choose the migration method before touching production
MySQL describes a logical dump and restore as the easiest, although not the fastest, way to move a database between two machines. It emits SQL statements that recreate object definitions and table data, so it is portable across operating systems and hardware architectures. The right method depends on more than database size: include the acceptable outage, network bandwidth, storage engine, source and target MySQL versions, GTID or replication requirements, whether accounts and privileges must move, and how you will roll back.

Recommended Free Tools
| Method | Best fit | Downtime profile | Main strengths | Important limitations |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Logical dump and restore | Small to medium databases, cross-platform or cross-version moves | Usually requires a write pause for the final dump or delta | Portable, inspectable SQL; straightforward recovery | Can be slow for very large tables because rows are replayed as SQL statements |
mysqldump --tab plus mysqlimport |
Large tables where load speed matters | Still needs a controlled cutover | Separates table definitions from delimited data files and avoids replaying every row as an INSERT statement | More files and operating-system handling; plan paths and permissions carefully |
| Replication-based migration | Large, busy systems that need a short final outage | Pause writes only while applying the final delta and switching clients | Target stays close to source while users continue working | More setup, monitoring, and failure modes; source and target must be replication-compatible |
| Clone plugin | Fast provisioning of a compatible MySQL instance or replica | Designed for direct instance transfer rather than a selective database export | Transfers data and replication settings efficiently | Remote cloning requires the donor and recipient to be in the same MySQL server series, such as 8.4 patch releases; it is not a universal cross-version migration tool |
Prepare the source and destination
Make a written inventory before exporting anything. Record the exact MySQL release and patch level on both servers, operating system and architecture, storage engine for each table, database character sets and collations, routines, triggers, events, scheduled jobs, users, hosts, grants, and application connection settings. Confirm that the destination has enough disk for the restored tables, indexes, temporary files, and the dump itself. A compressed dump still expands during restore.
- Create a destination MySQL instance and confirm that it accepts administrative connections.
- Install compatible client utilities, especially
mysqldump, mysql, mysqladmin, and, for file-based loading, mysqlimport. - Open only the required network path between servers. Prefer encrypted transport and a dedicated migration account with the minimum permissions needed.
- Decide where the dump will live, who can read it, how long it will be retained, and how it will be securely deleted.
- Schedule a maintenance window or design a replication cutover if writes cannot stop for the duration of the dump and restore.
- Take a normal backup before migration and define rollback criteria, such as failed integrity checks, missing objects, or unsuccessful application smoke tests.
Do not assume that copying a database name copies its users. MySQL stores grant tables in the mysql system database, and accounts are server-wide rather than confined to one application schema.

Method 1: stream a logical dump directly to the new server
For a single database, MySQL’s documented pattern creates the destination database and pipes the dump into the remote client. Run these commands from a machine that can reach both servers:
mysqladmin -h target-host create db_name
mysqldump db_name | mysql -h target-host db_name
Supply credentials securely with client option files or interactive prompts rather than placing passwords on the command line. If the destination requires a nondefault port, TLS settings, or a different administrative account, add those connection options to both clients. The pipe avoids creating an intermediate dump file, but it also means a network interruption can stop the entire transfer; for an auditable retry, use the file-based method below.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsInclude database creation statements when appropriate
Use --databases db_name when you want the dump to contain CREATE DATABASE and USE statements:
mysqldump --databases db_name | mysql -h target-host
For several schemas, list them after --databases, for example mysqldump --databases db1 db2. To export the entire instance, use --all-databases only after reviewing what the system schemas contain and deciding whether server-level objects should really be moved.
Method 2: create, transfer, and restore a compressed dump
A file gives you a checksum point, lets you retry a failed upload without re-reading the source, and can be retained until verification is complete. The basic sequence is:
- On the source, create a streaming compressed dump:
mysqldump --quick db_name | gzip > db_name.sql.gz - Restrict the file to the migration administrator, transfer it over an encrypted channel, and verify its size or checksum after transfer. Remove temporary copies when the retention period ends.
- On the target, create the schema if the dump does not contain database statements:
mysqladmin create db_name - Restore the compressed stream:
gunzip < db_name.sql.gz | mysql db_name
Use --databases db_name in the dump instead of a separate mysqladmin create step when you want the dump to create and select the schema itself. During restore, watch the client’s exit status and the MySQL error log; a shell pipeline can otherwise hide an upstream failure if it is not checked explicitly.

Make the dump consistent without overwhelming the source
InnoDB and --single-transaction
For InnoDB tables, add --single-transaction to obtain a transactionally consistent view without locking ordinary reads and writes for the whole dump:
mysqldump --single-transaction --quick db_name | gzip > db_name.sql.gz
This option is an online-backup pattern for transactional tables, not a universal freeze. Writes to nontransactional tables such as MyISAM can change while the dump is running, and DDL that alters tables during the dump can invalidate consistency assumptions. If a schema mixes engines, identify those tables and either pause writes to them or schedule a maintenance window.
Stream rows with --quick
--quick tells mysqldump to fetch and write rows incrementally rather than buffering an entire table in memory. It is particularly important for large tables and is commonly paired with --single-transaction:
mysqldump --single-transaction --quick db_name | gzip > db_name.sql.gz
Compression reduces storage and network traffic but consumes CPU on the source and destination. Measure the bottleneck: on a CPU-constrained server, compression can slow the export; on a bandwidth-constrained link, it can shorten the transfer.

Preserve programmable objects
Confirm that routines, triggers, and events are included according to your instance policy. Triggers are associated with their tables; stored procedures and functions require the appropriate dump option, and events require event export. After restoration, query the target explicitly for each object class rather than assuming a successful row import means the whole application was copied.
GTIDs and replication coordinates
If the source uses GTIDs, review the dump’s --set-gtid-purged behavior before importing it into a server that already has GTID history. Do not blindly combine unrelated GTID sets. For provisioning a replica, --source-data records binary-log coordinates in the dump so the target can be configured to start replication from the correct position. Treat those coordinates as part of a replication plan, not as a substitute for configuring, monitoring, and validating replication.

Move very large tables with --tab and mysqlimport
When replaying millions of INSERT statements is the dominant cost, MySQL documents a file-based alternative. Run mysqldump --tab=DUMPDIR on the source. It writes SQL files containing table definitions and delimited data files containing rows. Transfer the complete directory, preserve file names and permissions, create the destination schema, apply the definition files, and load the data files with mysqlimport.
mysqldump --tab=DUMPDIR db_name
The directory must be writable by the server process that creates the files, and the resulting data files must be readable by the process performing the import. Because this method writes files on the source host, it is not equivalent to a remote pipe. Plan disk capacity for both the source export directory and the target’s temporary import space. Validate delimiters, character sets, line endings, and NULL representation if data will cross operating systems.
Use replication when the final outage must be short
Replication migration separates the bulk copy from the cutover. First transfer a consistent source snapshot, commonly a dump created with --source-data. Configure the target to use the recorded binary-log coordinates, or the appropriate GTID position, and let it apply changes while the source continues serving traffic. Monitor replication lag and errors until the target is caught up.
- Capture the source version, binary-log or GTID state, and replication prerequisites.
- Create the consistent snapshot and transfer it to the target.
- Restore the snapshot, then configure the target’s replication source using the coordinates recorded by the dump.
- Wait for the target to apply all available changes. Investigate every replication error; do not cut over with an unexplained gap.
- Enter the maintenance window, stop or drain application writes, wait for the final position to apply, and confirm the target is current.
- Point applications at the target, monitor errors and latency, and keep the source untouched for the agreed rollback period.
Replication adds operational complexity: account for binary-log retention, filters, incompatible statements, GTID history, and what happens if the target fails during catch-up. A rehearsal on a nonproduction copy is valuable because the hardest failures usually occur in configuration and cutover, not in the initial dump.
Consider the Clone plugin for same-series instance transfers
MySQL’s Clone plugin can transfer all data and replication settings from an existing replica. Remote cloning uses this syntax:
CLONE INSTANCE FROM 'user'@'host':port IDENTIFIED BY 'password';
The donor and recipient must be in the same MySQL server series, such as compatible 8.4 patch releases. Treat Clone as a fast provisioning mechanism for a compatible instance, not as a general method for moving a database between arbitrary MySQL versions. Confirm that the initiating account has the clone privileges required by your server configuration, that the recipient has enough storage, and that you have a recovery path if the recipient is overwritten. Avoid exposing passwords in shell history or shared transcripts; create a temporary credential, use it only for the operation, and revoke it afterward.

Move users, grants, and server-level security deliberately
Application data and account metadata are separate migration objects. Make an account inventory that includes user name, host pattern, authentication method, password policy, roles, and grants. Recreate accounts on the target using an approved administrative process and apply the output of SHOW GRANTS for each account. Test both ordinary application access and administrative access from the actual client hosts; a grant for user@localhost does not automatically authorize the same name connecting from another host.
If your change plan explicitly includes importing the MySQL system database, treat it as a version-sensitive operation rather than a routine application-schema restore. After importing the mysql database, MySQL instructs administrators to run:
mysqladmin flush-privileges
That reloads the grant tables. Review system-table changes against the target release before using this approach, and do not overwrite unrelated destination accounts accidentally. In many migrations, recreating only the required users and grants is safer than replacing the entire system schema.
Secure the transfer and temporary files
- Use encrypted transport for remote client connections and file transfer.
- Do not put passwords in commands that will be saved in shell history, process listings, CI logs, or chat transcripts.
- Set restrictive permissions on dump files and export directories because logical dumps can contain every application secret stored in the database.
- Use a dedicated migration account, rotate or revoke it after the move, and remove temporary dumps after verification and the approved retention period.
- Record who performed the export, where the file was stored, and which checksum or transfer verification was used.
Verify the target before changing application traffic
A restore that exits successfully can still be incomplete or unusable. Perform verification in layers:

| Operations | Check error logs, backups, monitoring, alerting, scheduled events, and capacity. | Do not cut over until routine operational controls work on the new host. |
For a replication migration, also verify that the target has applied the final source position and that no replication error remains. For a dump-and-restore migration, run the same validation after the restore and again after any final delta import.
Cut over with a reversible plan
- Announce the maintenance window and pause writes, or place the application in read-only mode. Stop background workers that could continue writing.
- Take the final incremental dump or wait for replication to reach the recorded source position.
- Run the last schema, data, account, and application checks on the target.
- Update the application’s connection string, secret, service discovery record, or DNS entry. Reduce DNS time-to-live ahead of time if DNS is part of the switch, but still expect existing connection pools to persist.
- Watch connection failures, error rates, query latency, deadlocks, replication status, and disk usage.
- Keep the old server powered and unchanged until the rollback window closes. Define rollback as returning clients to the old endpoint, restoring writes there if necessary, and accounting for any writes accepted by the new server.
Do not treat a DNS change as proof that every client has moved. Long-lived pools, cached records, hard-coded endpoints, and worker processes can continue using the old host. Confirm the active connection source in application and database monitoring.
Best Value
Troubleshoot common migration failures
The dump stops or the target reports lost connection
Check network stability, server timeouts, disk space, and the first error in the client and server logs. A file-based compressed dump lets you retry transfer independently of export. For an interrupted restore, determine whether the import is safely repeatable or whether you must drop and recreate the destination schema before starting again.
Rows are missing or inconsistent
Confirm whether all affected tables are InnoDB. If nontransactional tables were written during a --single-transaction dump, repeat with writes paused for those tables. Compare counts or checksums and identify whether the mismatch arose during export, transfer, or restore.
Stored procedures, events, or triggers are absent
Inspect the dump for the relevant object definitions and verify that the source account could read them. Add the required routine or event export options, restore definitions separately if needed, and rerun object-level checks on the target.
Users can connect but cannot access the application schema
Check the exact user-and-host combination, authentication method, roles, and grants. Reapply the output of SHOW GRANTS for the account, then test from the same network location the application uses. If the mysql system database was imported, run mysqladmin flush-privileges and review the target’s error log.
GTID or replication setup rejects the dump
Stop and review the source and target GTID histories before retrying. Reconsider the dump’s --set-gtid-purged behavior and use the coordinates captured with --source-data only in a deliberate replication procedure. Never edit GTID metadata casually to force a start.
Clone is unavailable or refuses the operation
Check that both instances are in the same supported server series, that the recipient has sufficient space, that networking and clone privileges are configured, and that the donor is the intended instance. If versions are not compatible, return to logical dump and restore or use a replication design that supports the version pair.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Decision examples
Small application database, planned maintenance
Use mysqldump --single-transaction --quick, compress the file, transfer it securely, restore it, recreate or import required accounts, run verification, and switch the application during a short maintenance window. This minimizes moving parts and leaves an inspectable artifact.
Large InnoDB database with limited outage
Seed the target from a consistent dump, configure replication using the captured source coordinates, monitor lag, and cut over only after the final source position is applied. The initial copy can take hours while the source remains available; the outage is limited to the final write pause and endpoint change.
Compatible 8.4 instances where the whole recipient can be provisioned
Evaluate Clone when transferring the complete instance and its replication settings is acceptable. Confirm same-series compatibility and privileges first; do not choose it merely because the database is large if the destination version or object selection is different.
