Recreate the application on the destination Coolify instance, test it on a temporary domain, migrate each database and file store with a method appropriate to its data type, perform a final synchronization after stopping writes, then assign the production domain and update DNS. Leave the source available and unchanged until the destination has passed production checks.

What a Coolify migration actually moves
Coolify does not provide a single export-and-import operation for an application. A migration has two separate parts:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Application definition: the Git repository or container image, branch or tag, build and start commands, ports, environment variables, domains, mounts, health checks, schedules and deployment settings.
- Application state: database records, uploaded files, generated assets, queues, object-storage data, cache contents and state held by external services.
Recreating the definition is usually straightforward. Preserving state requires a separate procedure for every stateful dependency. A successful deployment with an empty database or missing uploads is not a successful migration.
Choose a migration window and rollback boundary
Decide in advance when writes will stop and how long the old server will remain available. A short-lived maintenance window is normally safer than allowing both servers to accept writes. If the destination accepts writes and you later return traffic to the source, changing DNS back does not merge those new records or files; you must account for them explicitly.

Keep the source application and its storage unchanged until the destination has passed functional, integration and backup checks. Retain the final database dumps and file archives for the rollback period you choose.
1. Inventory the source application
Record the current configuration before creating anything on the new server. Export or copy the values into a migration worksheet, but do not place secrets in a public document.
Application and deployment settings
- Git repository, image name, registry, branch, tag or commit, and the build and start commands.
- Build arguments, runtime environment variables, shared variables and secret values.
- Internal listening port, exposed ports, proxy settings, health-check path and timing.
- Production domains, redirects, TLS expectations and any alternate hostnames.
- Persistent mounts, named Docker volumes, bind-mounted directories and their host paths.
- Scheduled tasks, queue workers, cron expressions, deployment hooks and webhooks.
- Resource limits, restart policies, replicas and other operational settings.
External dependencies
List every service that the application calls or that calls it. Include PostgreSQL, MySQL or MariaDB, MongoDB, Redis-compatible stores, queues, object-storage buckets, managed databases, email providers, OAuth applications, payment or webhook endpoints, monitoring, registries and CI systems. Coolify cannot infer state held outside the application definition.
For each dependency, note its endpoint, credentials, network allow-list, encryption requirements, backup method and whether it must be switched to a new hostname or IP address.
2. Prepare the destination server and Coolify instance
Validate the destination before transferring production data.
Infrastructure checks
- Confirm that the destination server is reachable over SSH and that its CPU, memory and disk capacity are appropriate for the application and its data.
- Verify the Coolify deployment server, reverse proxy and firewall configuration.
- Test outbound access to the Git host, container registry, package repositories, email provider and external APIs.
- Confirm that required DNS records can point to the new address and that ports 80 and 443 are reachable for HTTP and TLS.
- Check available storage for the live data, temporary archives, decompressed database files and rollback copies. An archive can require substantially more space after extraction.
Recreate destination-side credentials
Create or import the private keys, Git integrations, registry authentication, S3-compatible destinations, deploy keys and shared variables that belong to the destination Coolify instance. Test authentication before the first production deployment. A copied environment variable is not useful if the new server cannot reach the service it identifies.
3. Recreate and test the application on a temporary domain
- In the destination Coolify dashboard, create a new application using the same deployment method as the source: the corresponding Git source and revision, or the same container image and tag.
- Enter the non-production credentials and destination-safe environment variables. Point the application at an isolated or read-only test data set where possible.
- Configure the internal port, health check, mounts, proxy settings and resource limits to match the inventory.
- Assign a temporary hostname that does not receive production traffic. Issue temporary TLS if your proxy requires HTTPS for realistic testing.
- Deploy and inspect the build and runtime logs. Confirm that the intended image or commit was used, the health check becomes healthy, and the process listens on the expected internal port.
- Test outbound connections, authentication, background workers, uploads, downloads and representative reads. Do not start the production write workload yet.
This stage catches mismatched ports, missing secrets, unavailable registries, incorrect file paths and incompatible runtime versions before the migration window.
4. Move state using the method that fits its type
Do not treat all persistent data as files. A database needs a database-aware backup; a user-upload directory needs a file-preserving copy; a queue or managed service normally needs its provider’s procedure.

Databases: logical backup and restore
For supported databases, create a logical dump with the database’s native tools, transfer it securely, create the destination database with compatible settings and restore the dump. Include roles, extensions, schemas, collations and ownership where the engine requires them. Validate row counts, migrations and application queries after restoring.
Do not copy a running database’s Docker volume as a substitute for a database-aware backup. Live database files can be internally inconsistent or unusable when moved while the server is writing.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsNamed Docker volumes
A named volume can be archived and restored, but only after writes are stopped. The practical sequence is:
- Stop the source application and any worker or scheduled process that writes to the volume.
- Confirm the exact volume name and inspect its size and ownership.
- Create a tar archive from the volume, preserving permissions, symbolic links and numeric ownership.
- Transfer the archive over an authenticated channel to the destination.
- Create the destination volume, extract the archive into it with the same ownership and permissions, and attach it to the recreated application.
- Start the destination application and verify that it can read and write the restored data.
An archive of a volume is a file transfer technique, not a database backup. Use the database procedure above when the volume contains a database.
Bind mounts and host directories
For a bind mount, copy the exact source path to the destination path while preserving ownership, permissions, symbolic links and extended attributes when they matter to the application. Check UID and GID mappings: a directory owned by a host user on the source may appear inaccessible to a container running under a different numeric user on the destination. Compare file counts and representative checksums before starting production traffic.
Coolify-managed file mounts
If the application uses a file mount created in the Coolify dashboard, recreate that mount on the destination application and then restore its contents. The mount definition alone does not carry the files. Confirm the target path inside the container and ensure the process user can read and write it.

Object storage, queues and caches
Move object-storage buckets, managed queues, caches and other external services through their provider-supported process. Update endpoint names, access keys, bucket policies, network rules and lifecycle settings. Caches can often be rebuilt, but only discard one after confirming that the application does not rely on cache contents as its sole copy of data. Queues require special care: pause producers, drain or export pending jobs as appropriate, and prevent the same job from being consumed by both servers.
Documented persistent paths for common database services
When you are checking a Coolify storage definition, these are the documented persistent paths. PostgreSQL changed its path in version 18; verify the image and Coolify configuration before copying anything.

5. Perform the final synchronization
The test migration may be hours or days old by the time it is ready for production. Schedule a final synchronization that closes the gap.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Announce the maintenance window and stop scheduled jobs, queue producers and other automated writers.
- Put the source application into maintenance mode or stop it completely. Verify that no worker, webhook or cron task is still writing.
- Create a final logical database dump and record its timestamp, size and checksum.
- Copy files changed since the earlier test migration, or create a fresh archive when incremental copying is not reliable. Preserve ownership and permissions.
- Restore the final database state on the destination and apply any required schema migrations exactly once.
- Restore the final file state, check mount paths and permissions, and update final environment variables and credentials.
- Redeploy or restart the destination application and inspect logs for startup errors, failed migrations and connection failures.
Keep a written timestamp for the write freeze and for each dump or archive. This makes it possible to identify which state was present if a rollback decision is needed.
6. Test the destination before changing DNS
Use the temporary domain or a local hosts-file override to exercise the destination while the production hostname still points to the source.
- Sign in and sign out; test password resets and OAuth callbacks.
- Read existing records, create a test record, edit it and delete it where safe.
- Upload, download, rename and remove representative files.
- Run a background job and verify its result, retries and logging.
- Send a test email and confirm the provider accepts it from the new server.
- Trigger each important webhook and inspect the receiver’s response.
- Check health status, error logs, metrics, backups and disk usage.
- Confirm TLS certificate validity, redirect behavior, cookies and secure headers.
Remove test records or mark them clearly before opening the destination to users.
7. Cut over the production domain and DNS
- In the destination application, add or assign the production domain and configure the same redirects and proxy rules used on the source.
- Confirm that the destination can obtain or serve a valid TLS certificate. Certificate issuance may require the DNS record or HTTP challenge to reach the new server.
- Change the relevant A, AAAA or CNAME records to the destination address. Follow the DNS provider’s documented TTL and propagation behavior rather than assuming an immediate global switch.
- Query the hostname from more than one network and open the site in a clean browser session. Confirm that routing, TLS, authentication, uploads and API callbacks reach the destination.
- Keep monitoring both servers during propagation. Do not resume source writers after the cutover unless you have deliberately planned a reverse synchronization.
8. Reconnect automation and operational services
After traffic is reaching the new server, update every system that still points to the old instance:
- Git webhooks and CI/CD secrets.
- Scheduled tasks and external cron triggers.
- Container registry credentials and deploy keys.
- Monitoring, alerting, uptime checks and log shipping.
- OAuth redirect URLs, webhook callback URLs and allow-listed IP addresses.
- Email provider sending domains, SMTP restrictions and bounce callbacks.
- Backup destinations, retention policies and notification channels.
Trigger a test deployment and one scheduled or background operation. Confirm stable logs, expected records, successful backups and valid TLS over a complete application cycle.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Coolify instance backup is not an application backup
A Coolify instance backup restores the control plane: projects, resources, settings, saved credentials and deployment history. It does not restore data inside deployed applications, databases, services or volumes. The saved APP_KEY is required to decrypt restored credentials. Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Why the Coolify clone operation is not a server migration
Clone creates a new stopped application from configuration and storage definitions. It does not copy the contents of Docker volumes, bind mounts, directories, databases or external services, and it does not move an application between separate Coolify instances. You still need to recreate the destination application and transfer its state using the procedures above.
Compare the main migration approaches
| Approach | What it carries | What you must still do | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Rebuild on destination plus logical database restore | Application configuration and a database-aware copy of records | Transfer files, reconnect external services, test on a temporary domain and perform DNS cutover | Most production databases |
| Named-volume archive | Files in a stopped Docker volume | Stop all writers, preserve ownership, attach the destination volume and validate consistency | Non-database persistent files or a provider-approved offline data move |
| Bind-mount copy | Files at a host path | Recreate the mount, preserve permissions and verify UID/GID access | Uploads, generated assets and application directories |
| Coolify instance restore | Projects, resources, settings, credentials and deployment history | Move application data separately; provide APP_KEY and required SSH material |
Control-plane recovery or a Coolify machine move |
| Clone | Configuration and storage definitions | Copy every volume, database, directory and external dependency yourself | Creating a similar stopped application, not cross-instance migration |
Failure modes and recovery actions
The destination deploys but shows an empty application
Check that the restored database is the one referenced by the destination environment variables and that the application is using the intended schema. Confirm that the volume or bind mount is attached to the exact path expected inside the container.
Uploads return permission errors
Compare the numeric owner and group of the destination directory with the container process user. Correct ownership and mode bits on the host, then restart the application and test a new upload.
Health checks fail while the process appears running
Verify the internal port, health-check path, scheme and expected response code. Check whether the process binds to 127.0.0.1 instead of the container interface and inspect startup logs for missing variables.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
OAuth or webhooks still reach the old server
Update provider callback URLs and allow-lists, not just DNS. Trigger a fresh callback and inspect both the provider’s delivery log and the destination application log.
DNS changed but users see mixed behavior
Propagation and resolver caching can send different users to different addresses for a period of time. Keep the source read-only, monitor both endpoints, and do not allow concurrent writes that would create divergent records.
Rollback is required after destination writes
Stop destination writes first and preserve its database and file state. Decide whether those new writes must be reconciled into the source before returning traffic. A DNS reversal changes routing; it does not merge databases, queues or uploaded files.
Quick Recap
Final migration checklist
- Source configuration, secrets, mounts, jobs and external dependencies are inventoried.
- Destination capacity, SSH, proxy, registry and outbound connectivity are verified.
- Application is recreated and tested on a temporary domain.
- Databases are moved with logical backups or the provider’s supported method.
- Files are copied with ownership, permissions and timestamps preserved where needed.
- Final write freeze, dump and file synchronization are complete.
- Login, reads, writes, uploads, jobs, email, OAuth, webhooks and TLS are tested.
- Production domain and DNS point to the destination.
- Webhooks, CI, schedules, monitoring and backups are reconnected.
- Source remains available for the rollback period, with final backups retained.
