To merge PDFs, add the files to a PDF editor, arrange the pages in the order you want, and save the combined document. To split one, choose the page boundaries or a rule such as page count or bookmarks, then save the resulting files. On a Mac, Preview can combine whole PDFs or selected pages; Acrobat desktop offers more split rules, while Acrobat on the web saves split results to Adobe cloud storage.
Choose a method that fits your device and workflow
| Option | Best suited to | Output and control |
|---|---|---|
| Acrobat desktop | Combining files and splitting by defined rules | Preview and rearrange pages before combining; split by page count, file size, or top-level bookmarks. You choose an output folder for split files. Adobe’s combine instructions and split tutorial |
| Preview on Mac | Combining complete PDFs or selected pages | Drag page thumbnails into another PDF and reorder them in the sidebar. Preview saves edits automatically, so duplicate files first if you need to preserve the originals. Apple’s Preview guide |
| Acrobat on the web | Splitting a PDF by chosen page boundaries | Select where to divide the uploaded PDF; the resulting PDFs are saved to Adobe cloud storage. Adobe’s web split instructions |
Choose based on whether you need to reorder individual pages, split by a rule rather than manually selected boundaries, or keep the result in a particular location. The cited instructions do not establish comparative pricing, processing speed, upload retention, or a privacy ranking, so those are not compared here.

Merge PDFs in Acrobat desktop
Acrobat can combine PDFs and other file types. Its thumbnail preview lets you check page order and remove pages before creating the combined file. Follow Adobe’s Combine Files instructions:

- Review the thumbnail preview. Drag files or pages into the desired order and remove any pages you do not want.

- In the source PDF, select the page thumbnails to copy. To combine a complete PDF, select all its pages.

Split a PDF in Acrobat desktop
Acrobat desktop supports three split rules: a number of pages per file, a maximum file size, or top-level bookmarks. Its tutorial also describes choosing an output folder and file labels. The best rule depends on how you plan to use the pieces: page count makes evenly sized page groups, file size targets a size limit, and bookmarks can divide a document along its main sections. See Adobe’s split tutorial.

Bookmark-based splitting depends on the document having suitable top-level bookmarks. If it does not, use a page-count or file-size rule instead.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSplit a PDF by page boundaries on the web
Acrobat on the web lets you upload a PDF and choose where to divide it. Adobe says the split files are saved to Adobe cloud storage. Use this workflow when you want to specify page boundaries rather than split by a desktop rule; account for the cloud destination when deciding whether it suits your file. Make a new PDF from the middle of a document
If you need to “cut out the middle section” as a separate document, split the original at the page before that section and at its final page. The middle pages become their own PDF, while the pages before and after remain outside that selection. For a different result—removing the middle pages while keeping the beginning and end together—create a new PDF from the pages you want to retain, or use Acrobat’s page preview to remove the unwanted pages before saving. Verify the page boundaries in the preview before creating the output.
