To merge a Hyper-V differencing disk, shut down the virtual machine, confirm the disk’s parent chain, then merge from the newest child toward its parent. Use Hyper-V Manager’s Edit Disk > Merge workflow or PowerShell’s Merge-VHD. The merge is offline; do not start it while the virtual disk chain is attached.
Before you merge: shut down the VM and verify the chain
A differencing disk stores changes relative to a parent disk. Hyper-V checkpoints can create several linked layers, so merging the wrong file or skipping a parent can leave the VM unable to use its disk. Shut down the VM first, and make a backup or copy of the complete chain before manual consolidation.

Microsoft describes Merge-VHD as merging virtual hard disks in a differencing chain and states that the chain must not be attached when the operation begins: Microsoft Learn: Merge-VHD.

Inspect the VM’s configured disks and their parent paths before changing any files:

Get-VMHardDiskDrive -VMName <VMName> |
ForEach-Object { Get-VHD -Path $_.Path | Select-Object Path,ParentPath,VHDType }
Use the output to trace each disk’s Path, ParentPath, and VHDType. The active, youngest child is the end of the chain; merge it into its immediate parent, then proceed to the next older layer.
Merge with Hyper-V Manager
- Shut down the virtual machine.
- In Hyper-V Manager, select Edit Disk.
- Browse to and select the current
.avhdxfile. - Choose Merge, then To the parent virtual disk.
- For a chain with multiple layers, repeat for each remaining child, moving from youngest to oldest.
- If the VM still points to an AVHDX or an old disk location after the merge, edit its hard-disk setting to use the resulting merged
.vhdx.
Microsoft’s Hyper-V checkpoint guidance covers merging and correcting the VM’s disk configuration: Microsoft Learn: Merge checkpoints.

Merge with PowerShell
For one child disk, specify the child as -Path and its immediate parent as -DestinationPath:

Merge-VHD -Path C:VMdisk.avhdx -DestinationPath C:VMparent.vhdx
Replace the example paths with the verified paths in your chain. The equivalent parameter form is:

Merge-VHD -Path <child.avhdx> -DestinationPath <parent.vhdx>
For multiple layers, merge the youngest child into its parent first, then merge the updated parent upward into the next parent. Do not attach the chain during the operation. Microsoft’s command reference includes a multi-layer example: Merge-VHD examples.
DiskPart alternative
DiskPart also supports merging a differencing virtual disk with its parent. Its documented workflow selects a virtual disk and runs merge vdisk; consult Microsoft’s reference for the exact command syntax and selection steps: Microsoft Learn: merge vdisk. For checkpoint chains, Hyper-V Manager or Merge-VHD makes the child-to-parent operation and troubleshooting path clearer.

What happens to the child files?
A successful merge does not automatically delete the source child files. However, Microsoft states that those files are no longer valid virtual-disk files after the merge. Do not treat them as a usable fallback or delete them until you have verified the resulting disk and VM configuration.
If the merge fails or the VM will not boot
- Parent or base file is missing: Restore the missing file from backup if possible. The remaining child cannot reconstruct blocks that depend on the missing parent.
- The merge cannot start: Confirm that the VM is shut down and the chain is not attached. Recheck every path and the
ParentPathlinks. - Storage is insufficient: Ensure enough free storage is available for the merge to complete.
- The VM does not boot after a manual merge: Check that the chain is consistent and that the VM’s hard-disk setting points to the resulting merged VHDX, rather than an old AVHDX path.
Do not try to recover a broken chain by guessing a parent path or merging a child into a non-parent disk. Restore missing chain files where possible, then verify the links before attempting consolidation again.
