The smallest opening measurement and narrowest route point matter most; the refrigerator you have now is not a reliable substitute for measuring the space.
What to measure before choosing a refrigerator
Use a retractable tape measure and record measurements in the same units used on the refrigerator’s specification sheet. Clear the area enough to see the actual obstructions: cabinets, counters, walls, trim, baseboards and floor transitions. Measure the kitchen location itself, not just the old appliance.

- Opening width: Measure between obstructions at more than one height, including beneath any countertop overhang. Record the narrowest usable width.
- Opening height: Measure from the finished floor to the underside of the cabinet or other obstruction above. Check the refrigerator drawing for hinge height, which may extend above the cabinet body.
- Usable depth: Measure from the wall to the front edge you want the refrigerator to align with, accounting for trim or molding. Compare the model’s depth with and without doors and handles if those dimensions are listed.
Openings may not be square or uniform. A floor that slopes or changes height can affect usable clearance, so take measurements at the points that could constrain the appliance.
Allow for installation clearance
Refrigerators need space for airflow and, depending on the installation, water or electrical connections. Clearance requirements vary by model and manufacturer; use the exact model’s current installation manual rather than treating a general recommendation as a universal rule.

Check doors, drawers and room to use the refrigerator
A refrigerator can fit the cabinet opening and still be awkward or impossible to use. Check the model’s door-open diagrams and consider the hinge side, nearby walls and cabinets, handles, drawers, kitchen islands and walkways. Confirm that doors open far enough for normal access and, if needed, shelf or drawer removal. Include any hinge or handle projection shown in the model dimensions.
Do not assume a “counter-depth” model will fit your cutout or open unobstructed. That label does not replace checking the specific appliance dimensions, required clearance and door-swing geometry.

Measure the delivery route separately
The final opening is only one part of the fit. Measure the exterior entrance and every doorway, hallway, stairwell and turn between the unloading point and the kitchen. Note the narrowest point, including trim or other protrusions, and compare it with the dimensions and maneuvering requirements supplied for the selected refrigerator.
Ask the retailer or delivery provider about its route requirements and whether its crew can remove appliance doors if necessary. Services and policies vary, so do not assume doors can be removed or that a tight turn is manageable without confirmation. Whirlpool’s delivery and installation guidance also recommends checking doorways, hallways and stairwells and clearing the route.

Use a fit record to compare models
Before ordering, keep these measurements together and compare them with the exact refrigerator’s dimension drawing and installation guide:
- Narrowest opening width and opening height, measured from the finished floor.
- Usable depth, plus the model’s listed dimensions with and without doors and handles.
- Required rear, side and top installation clearances, and room for connections.
- Hinge-side conditions, door swing, drawer projection and front clearance.
- Narrowest delivery-route measurement and any tight turns or stairs.
If more than one model fits, compare each model’s actual dimensions, clearances, door-open and drawer projection, hinge-side needs and delivery access against this record. Make the final fit decision from the specific product drawings and your home measurements, not the refrigerator’s style label or the dimensions of an existing appliance.
