Stand barefoot on a hard, level floor against a flat wall, place a level book or rigid ruler on the crown of your head, mark its lower edge on the wall, then measure from the floor to the mark. For the most reliable home result, have another person help and keep your head aligned while you stand tall.
What you need
- A flat wall without a baseboard or molding
- A hard, level floor rather than carpet
- A rigid, flat book or ruler
- A metal tape measure
- A pencil or removable marker
- Another person to position the headpiece and make the mark, if available
How to measure your height against a wall
- Prepare the spot. Choose a wall that meets the floor without trim and stand on firm flooring.
- Remove anything that adds height. Take off shoes and hats. Undo or move hairstyles and hair ornaments that would stop the book or ruler from resting on the crown of your head.
- Stand in position. Keep your feet flat and together, legs straight, arms relaxed at your sides, and shoulders level. Look straight ahead and stand tall.
- Set the headpiece. Have your helper place the book or ruler flat on your crown. Keep it level with the floor and at a right angle to the wall, then slide it down until it touches your head. The helper should bring their eyes level with the object before marking.
- Mark the wall. Make a small mark at the lower edge of the book or ruler where it meets the wall.
- Measure and record. Measure vertically from the floor to the mark with a metal tape measure. Write down the result and its unit, such as inches or centimeters.
How to stand without forcing your posture
Keep your trunk upright and your head aligned, but do not force every part of your body against the wall. CDC/NCHS guidance recognizes that body shape can make it difficult for the head, shoulders, buttocks, and heels all to touch at once. Get the best measurement you can while keeping your shoulders and arms relaxed and your head in the correct position.

What affects a home measurement
- Floor and wall: Carpet, a baseboard, or molding can interfere with the floor-to-wall starting point or prevent the headpiece from sitting squarely.
- Shoes and hair: Footwear, headwear, raised hairstyles, and ornaments can change the measured distance or keep the headpiece from reaching the crown.
- Headpiece angle: A book or ruler tilted up or down can shift the mark. Keep it horizontal and square to the wall.
- Repeatability: If you check again later, use the same method and posture, and record the unit each time.
CDC’s home instructions for measuring children recommend recording height to the nearest 1/8 inch or 0.1 centimeter. That is a recording increment specified in the instructions, not a guaranteed error margin or proof that every improvised home measurement is accurate to that level.
Wall method or stadiometer?
| Use case | Setup | What to know |
|---|---|---|
| Occasional home check | Flat wall, rigid book or ruler, and metal tape measure | Convenient household method; careful positioning and reading matter. |
| School screening or repeated standardized measurements | Wall-mounted or portable stadiometer | CDC identifies a stadiometer as preferred equipment for school height assessment and recommends maintaining and calibrating equipment. |
| NHANES standing-height measurement | Fixed vertical backboard and adjustable headpiece | The CDC/NCHS professional protocol describes purpose-built equipment and applies to participants able to stand unassisted. |
The CDC home procedure is written for measuring children; its basic positioning explains the wall method, but its stated recording increment is specific to that child-measurement guidance. CDC’s preference for a stadiometer applies to organized measurement settings. The cited sources do not establish a head-to-head accuracy comparison with a household book-and-tape setup.
