You can measure your height at home by yourself with a flat wall, a hard floor, a rigid book or ruler, and a metal tape measure. Stand straight with your head level, mark the wall at the underside of the headpiece, then measure from the floor to the mark. Careful setup matters more than writing down a very fine measurement increment.
What you need and how to set up
- A flat wall with no baseboard or molding that would keep your heels away from it.
- A hard, level floor; avoid carpet, which can compress.
- A flat, rigid book or ruler to use as a headpiece.
- A metal tape measure and, if needed, a pencil for marking the wall.
Remove your shoes, bulky clothing, hats, and hair accessories that could stop the book or ruler from resting on the crown of your head. CDC home guidance recommends firm flooring and a flat surface without molding.

Measure your height by yourself
- Stand at the wall. Put your feet flat on the floor, legs straight, arms at your sides, and shoulders level. Stand upright without straining.
- Set your head position. Face forward and look straight ahead, keeping your head level rather than tipping your chin up or down. Body shape can make it difficult for every point to touch the wall; prioritize an upright posture.
- Position the headpiece. Place the rigid book or ruler flat on your head and slide it back until it meets the wall at a right angle. Keep it horizontal. The CDC’s home guidance says to “use a flat and rigid ruler or book to form a right angle with the wall.”
- Mark the height. Keeping the headpiece in place, lightly mark the wall at its underside. Keep your eyes level with the book or ruler as you mark so you can see where its lower edge meets the wall.
- Measure from the floor. Step away and use a metal tape measure to measure vertically from the floor to the mark. Read the scale carefully.
- Record and check. Write down the result in inches or centimeters. If it seems inconsistent, repeat the positioning and marking steps rather than adjusting the number by guesswork.
How precise is a home measurement?
CDC home instructions specify recording height to the nearest 1/8 inch or 0.1 centimeter. Those are recording increments, not a guarantee that measuring alone achieves that accuracy. The official sources cited here do not quantify the error range for solo adult self-measurement.

For tracking changes, use the same setup and measure at a consistent time of day. The CDC’s NHANES anthropometry procedures manual notes that “the act of taking a deep breath helps straighten the spine to yield a more consistent and reproducible stature measurement.” For a practical home routine, stand tall and consistently; do not force a posture that feels strained.

Common mistakes that change the result
- Measuring in shoes or with obstructive hair items: Shoes add height, and hats, buns, braids, or ornaments can prevent the headpiece from resting on the crown. Remove them when possible.
- Using carpet or standing away from the wall: Carpet may compress underfoot, and molding can offset your heels from the wall. Use firm flooring and a clear, flat wall.
- Tilting your head: Looking up or down changes the headpiece position. Keep your eyes ahead and your head level.
- Angling the book or ruler: A tilted headpiece can place the mark too high or too low. Make sure it is level and square to the wall.
- Reading from an awkward angle: Look at the meeting point at eye level when marking, then read the tape carefully from floor to mark.
Wall method or stadiometer?
A stadiometer is purpose-built equipment with a fixed vertical backboard and an adjustable headpiece. The CDC describes it as preferred equipment for assessing height. A wall, book or ruler, and tape measure make the home method more accessible, while a stadiometer may suit frequent or standardized measurements.
The cited official guidance explains how to use the wall method and describes stadiometers, but does not provide a direct quantitative comparison of how accurately a person can measure themselves with either option. For measurements where standardized technique matters, use a stadiometer and follow its instructions or have the measurement taken by a trained person.
