To find out whether AI personalization causes more shoppers to buy, run a randomized experiment: keep one group on the existing experience, show the personalized experience to the other, and compare purchase conversion across everyone assigned to each group. Define the purchase event, denominator, and measurement window before launch; then report the absolute difference, relative lift, uncertainty, and commercial guardrails. Comparing shoppers who clicked a recommendation with those who did not cannot establish that personalization caused a change.
Design a test that can answer the causal question
A before-and-after comparison cannot separate personalization’s effect from seasonal demand, promotions, traffic mix, or other changes. Random assignment makes the control and treatment groups comparable in expectation; controlled experiments are designed to establish causal relationships between a change and user behavior, as described in the ExP Platform practical guide.

Write the hypothesis and treatment definition
Make the claim specific and falsifiable. For example: “Among eligible storefront visitors, using the AI recommendation policy on product listing pages increases the probability of a completed purchase within seven days of first eligible exposure, compared with the current recommendation policy, without reducing revenue per visitor or contribution margin.” Set the page, eligibility criteria, and attribution window to match your business.
Specify exactly what the AI policy does: which inputs it can use, when recommendations appear, what happens when it returns no result, and whether returning visitors keep seeing the assigned experience. Keep the model version, prompts or rules, catalog, and other treatment elements fixed during the test unless changing them is explicitly part of what you want to evaluate. If the AI also changes promotions, the experiment measures the combined change rather than the recommendation effect alone.

Choose a stable randomization unit
Assign each eligible user or customer persistently to control or treatment rather than randomizing every page view. If you cannot identify a person before login, choose a browser, session, or account as the unit and interpret the result for that unit. Record assignment, eligibility, actual exposure, and outcome events with timestamps and arm labels.
Analyze by intention to treat: include all eligible units assigned to each group, whether or not they clicked a recommendation or fully engaged with the experience. Filtering to people who engaged after assignment can undo the balance randomization created. If shoppers may switch devices or accounts, document what can be linked and how cross-device exposure could dilute the measured effect.
Define purchase conversion and supporting metrics
Set the primary outcome before the test
A clear purchase-conversion definition is:
Purchase conversion rate = distinct randomized eligible units with at least one qualifying completed order in the attribution window ÷ all randomized eligible units.

Before launch, define what counts as a completed order—for example, paid and not immediately canceled—along with the attribution window, currency, duplicate handling, and treatment of refunds. Keep the denominator tied to randomized eligible units; do not silently switch to sessions, exposed shoppers, or recommendation clickers.
Also choose whether you are counting unique converting visitors or total conversion events. Those are different measures: Optimizely’s conversion-rate documentation distinguishes unique conversions, which count a visitor once, from total conversions.
Report the commercial result, not just clicks
Purchase conversion is the primary outcome for the question “did more shoppers buy?”, but it does not capture order value or profitability. Report these measures alongside it:

It's a must-have for stocking stuffers for men and women, tools gifts for dad, tech gadgets for men, gifts for dad, gifts for him, gifts for husband, gifts for boyfriend, cool gadgets for men, and cool gifts for dad.
- Absolute conversion difference: treatment rate minus control rate, expressed in percentage points.
- Relative conversion lift: (treatment rate − control rate) ÷ control rate.
- Uncertainty: a confidence or credible interval for the difference, interpreted against the decision threshold you chose in advance.
- Revenue per randomized unit: often called revenue per visitor or user, plus average order value and orders per unit. Shopify’s personalization guidance recommends comparing a control with a personalized variant using a measure such as revenue per user.
- Guardrails: prespecified measures such as contribution margin, discount cost, returns or cancellations, page latency, out-of-stock exposure, complaints, or unsubscribe rate, as relevant to the store.
- Diagnostics: recommendation impressions, product click-through, add-to-cart, checkout starts, and checkout completion, to help locate where a change occurs.
Clicks, add-to-cart events, and recommendation-attributed sales can explain behavior, but they do not replace the purchase outcome. A higher conversion rate may still be a poor business result if average order value or margin falls.

Plan sample size, duration, and stopping rules
Use historical baseline conversion and traffic to estimate the sample needed to detect the smallest commercially worthwhile effect. Before launch, set the statistical approach, desired power, allocation, sample target or planned duration, and stopping procedure. No fixed run length suits every store: conversion rate and traffic determine how quickly a test can produce useful evidence. Include normal weekly shopping cycles and relevant campaign conditions. Google Search Central likewise notes that reliable test duration varies with conversion rates and website traffic (its testing guidance).
Avoid repeatedly checking results and stopping as soon as a favorable number appears unless your analysis method explicitly supports sequential monitoring. Do not change variants or eligibility rules midway and treat the result as if nothing changed. If traffic is too low to detect a meaningful effect, report the test as underpowered or test a larger, more consequential change; an inconclusive result does not prove there is no effect.

Validate the experiment before interpreting lift
Check assignment and event data before drawing conclusions. In particular, investigate sample ratio mismatch (SRM): a meaningful gap between expected and observed group proportions. Microsoft explains that SRM can signal missing or redundant data and selection bias, and cautions against interpreting results until the mismatch is resolved (Microsoft’s SRM guidance).
- Confirm observed allocation matches the configured split overall and across important entry channels.
- Verify assignments persist and each unit receives the intended experience.
- Reconcile eligible units, exposures, purchases, revenue, refunds, and timestamps with analytics and order systems.
- Check that conversion events are deduplicated consistently and the same attribution window is applied to both arms.
- Look for arm-specific logging failures, page errors, inventory problems, or rollout issues.
- Document concurrent experiments and promotions, and consider whether one experience could affect shoppers in the other group.
Calculate and interpret conversion lift
Use the planned analysis and the randomization unit. Present the control and treatment conversion rates, sample counts, absolute effect, relative lift, and uncertainty interval; state any exclusions. Do not give only a percent lift: if conversion moves from 2.0% to 2.2%, that is a 0.2-percentage-point increase and a 10% relative increase. The two figures describe the same change on different scales.

What published personalization results can—and cannot—tell you
Published examples show why a merchant should test its own experience rather than assume a typical lift. Optimizely’s 2026 analysis of 173,000 experiments across more than 1,200 companies from 2018–2026 reports that, under its own classification, sound experiments won 58% of the time versus 35% for poor setups. It also reports 17.4% higher average test impact for personalized web experiments on targeted audiences. These are vendor-dataset comparisons, not randomized comparisons of businesses that adopted personalization; the report says its AI-adoption comparisons are observational and cannot fully isolate causal differences. Optimizely’s report-specific “true experiment” inclusion rule required a production experiment with a control and at least one treatment, at least 1,000 visitors in each, and no signs of an A/A test. That is not a universal minimum sample-size rule.
In a separate Optimizely retail example, one personalized homepage recommendation test reported a 136% increase in click-through to product-detail pages, not a 136% increase in purchases. Another homepage messaging test reported a 6.07% decrease in add-to-cart and a 10.4% decrease in click-through. These context-specific results are not forecasts or benchmarks for another merchant. Shopify’s guidance also cautions against creating segments so small that they cannot support reliable inference.
Compare personalization policies fairly
If you want to compare two or more AI policies, test them on the same randomized eligible population and use the same prespecified outcomes and conditions. Keep model version and eligibility fixed within each comparison, or use a multi-arm or factorial design when you need to distinguish the effects of multiple changes.
