The report’s default metric is impressions, and it includes both AI Overviews and AI Mode—not a dedicated clicks-only view for AI Overviews. Google says clicks to external pages from an AI Overview count as clicks, while every link in the overview shares one search-result position.
Where to find the AI Overviews report
Open your website property in Google Search Console and select Generative AI performance report (Search). Google says worldwide rollout to websites was completed on August 31, 2026. A property may still lack the report if it has not received enough impressions in generative AI features or does not yet have access, so its absence is not proof of zero traffic.

How to use the report
- Start with impressions. Google defines an impression in this report as a time when links to your site were shown to a user in a generative AI feature on Google Search. The report includes impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode.
- Choose a dimension. Review results by pages, countries, dates, or devices. Page data uses the final URL after redirects, and most performance data is assigned to Google’s canonical URL. Dates can be grouped by day, week, or month and use Pacific Time.
- Filter search type when useful. Web: text-based covers traffic from text queries entered in Google’s standard search bar. Web: multimodal covers image-based searches, including Google Lens, Circle to Search on Android, uploaded images, and Chrome image search.
- Export when you need to work with the data elsewhere. Use the report’s export control for chart and table data. Values displayed as “~” or “-” are exported as zero.
What clicks and positions mean
Google’s definitions of impressions, position, and clicks explain how AI Overview activity is counted. Google states: “Clicking a link to an external page in the AI Overview counts as a click.” An AI Overview occupies one position in search results, so all its links receive that same position. Standard impression rules apply, and Search Console excludes data from Search Labs experiments while they remain in active development.

Although clicks are counted under Google’s methodology, the Generative AI performance report is not a separate, comprehensive AI Overviews click-attribution report. It includes impressions for AI Overviews and AI Mode and draws from the Web search type in the Search results Performance report. The documentation does not establish a way to isolate AI Overviews as an independent Search type within this report.

Why chart and table totals can differ
The chart is aggregated by property unless you apply a URL filter. If two results from the same property appear in a generative AI feature, the chart counts one impression. Table aggregation depends on the dimension: page rows are aggregated by page, while country, device, and date groupings are aggregated by property. Those different counting levels can produce different chart and table totals without indicating an error.
The broader Search results Performance report data guide also distinguishes property from page aggregation. At property level, results for the same property count once per query; at page level, each distinct URL counts. For comparisons, keep the aggregation level and filters consistent.

The newest Search performance data can be preliminary and may change over the next few hours. Search Console marks preliminary data with a dotted line; the default view shows complete days, and you must explicitly select preliminary dates to include them. Compare equivalent date ranges and data-completeness states rather than mixing finalized days with provisional ones.

Google’s Search Console data anomaly log records a logging error that reduced impressions in the Generative AI performance report from August 13 through August 17, 2026. Google’s August 21 update said the missing data had been restored and the Performance report then showed complete metrics.
