Use GA4 to measure AI referrals that reach your site, then connect those visits to correctly configured business events. GA4 groups recognized referrals from tools such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot and Grok under AI Assistant. Clicks from Google AI Overviews and AI Mode remain in Organic Search, so GA4 does not report them as a separate AI channel. Treat AI referrals as the measurable slice of AI search—not a complete measure of AI’s influence.
What GA4 can—and cannot—identify as AI search
GA4’s default channel definitions distinguish third-party assistant referrals from Google’s AI search surfaces. Its Default channel group documentation defines AI Assistant as visits from sources such as ChatGPT, Gemini, Deepseek, Copilot or Grok. The examples are not necessarily an exhaustive or permanent platform list.

Google places non-ad clicks from AI Overviews and AI Mode in Organic Search, not AI Assistant. That means standard GA4 reporting supports an aggregate view of Google organic traffic, but does not provide a separate total for Overview or Mode clicks. Do not label all Google organic sessions as AI Overview visits.
A citation or appearance in an AI answer is a visibility measure; a session or conversion recorded on your site is a different measure. Keep visibility observations—such as a dated set of prompts and citations—separate from site analytics. A page appearing in a sampled answer does not establish that a particular visit or conversion came from it.

Set up the outcomes you want to measure
Choose the actions that represent value for your site before analyzing acquisition: for example, a qualified lead submission, completed purchase, signup, trial start or subscription. Confirm that the corresponding events collect correctly, then mark the meaningful events as key events in GA4. Use Google’s recommended events for common interactions where they fit your implementation.
Do not treat a page view or any convenient event as a business conversion unless it represents an outcome you intend to report. The event definition determines what your conversion figures mean.

Find AI-referred sessions in GA4
- Open Reports → Acquisition → Traffic acquisition.
- Use a session-scoped dimension such as Session default channel group or Session source / medium. Traffic acquisition uses session-scoped dimensions, which identify the source associated with the session.
- Check for the AI Assistant channel and inspect source rows to see which recognized sources are included.
- Compare consistent date ranges and review sessions, users, landing pages, engagement, key events and revenue where those values are collected reliably.
Google distinguishes these session dimensions from user-scoped dimensions such as first-user source, which answer how a user first arrived. Name the scope and dimension in reports so readers do not confuse a session source with a user’s first acquisition source. See Google’s traffic-source dimensions documentation.

Start with GA4’s default AI Assistant channel. Create a custom channel group only if a defined reporting need requires sources the default group does not capture. Google’s custom channel group guidance gives an example using source-matching rules and recommends placing AI Assistants above Referrals so matching sources are assigned to the AI channel first.
Rank #3
Use explicit rules based on source values that actually appear in your property; do not paste a broad regular expression without validation. Google’s channel definition guidance notes that source lists and expressions need updating as platforms change. Custom channel groups are available in acquisition reports and Explorations and can be applied retroactively, but document the rule and the sources it is intended to capture.
Use referral tags carefully
OpenAI says ChatGPT search referral URLs automatically include utm_source=chatgpt.com, which can help identify that traffic in analytics platforms. This is a documented ChatGPT signal; it is not evidence that every AI platform tags referrals the same way. See the OpenAI Publishers and Developers FAQ.
For links your organization controls—such as newsletters, partner campaigns or promoted research—consistent UTM parameters can record source, medium and campaign. GA4’s manual tagging documentation explains the supported parameters. Do not add or claim a UTM on third-party AI citation links you do not control.

Connect AI referrals to key events without overstating attribution
For a session-level view, compare key events and revenue associated with sessions that began from AI Assistant sources. For credit across multiple interactions, use event-scoped dimensions and state the reporting attribution model. These are different views, not interchangeable versions of a single causal answer.
Google explains that session-scoped dimensions use paid and organic channels last click, while event-scoped dimensions follow the property’s selected reporting attribution model, which defaults to data-driven attribution. Check the model and label the view when reporting event-scoped credit. See Google’s attribution settings documentation.
A useful report can include:
- AI-referred sessions: observed arrivals grouped by source or channel.
- Landing pages: the pages where measurable AI referrals entered.
- Engagement: engagement rate or other interaction metrics implemented consistently.
- Key events and revenue: recorded outcomes associated with AI-referred sessions.
- Attribution view: event-scoped credit, with the selected model identified.
- Limits: likely unobserved influence, missing referrers and Google AI search clicks included in Organic Search.
Interpret direct traffic and conversion rates cautiously
GA4 defines direct / (none) as traffic without a clear referral source. Missing traffic information, redirects and ad blockers are among the possible causes, according to Google’s direct traffic documentation. An AI-influenced visitor may return later through a route that no longer carries an identifiable AI referrer.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Conversely, a recorded AI referral identifies the source GA4 received for that arrival; it does not prove AI alone caused a later conversion. GA4 reports recorded source information and configured events, not a universal causal account of every customer journey.
There is no established universal AI-search conversion-rate premium supported by the documentation cited here. Calculate rates from your own consistently configured data, and disclose the date range, sample, event definition and attribution view. Avoid conversion multipliers that do not identify their original study, sample and measurement method.
