To measure PDF compression, compare the original and processed files in bytes, then calculate the ratio, percentage reduction, or percentage of the original size that remains. To estimate savings for an archive, add the original and processed byte counts across a representative sample and weight the result by file size—not by treating every PDF as equal. There is no single compression percentage that applies to every collection: file contents and processing settings affect the outcome.
How do you calculate a PDF compression ratio?
Record the original size and processed size using the same method and unit. Use exact byte counts for the calculations where possible; an operating-system display rounded to MB is only an approximation. The phrase “compression ratio” is used inconsistently, so state the convention you use.

- Original-to-processed ratio: original bytes ÷ processed bytes. For example, if a file goes from 10,000,000 bytes to 5,000,000 bytes, the ratio is 2:1.
- Percentage size reduction: 100 × (original bytes − processed bytes) ÷ original bytes. In that example, the reduction is 50%.
- Remaining-size fraction: processed bytes ÷ original bytes. Multiply by 100 to express it as a percentage. In the example, 50% of the original size remains.
These figures describe the same before-and-after file in different ways; the 2:1 example is arithmetic, not a typical performance result. Adobe Acrobat’s Audit space usage feature can show how much space different PDF elements occupy, but the total original and processed sizes are still the inputs for the calculations.
Keep size units consistent
Do the arithmetic in bytes. If you report a result in MB or GB, specify whether you used decimal units (1 MB = 1,000,000 bytes) or binary units (1 MiB = 1,048,576 bytes), and apply that convention throughout. Avoid comparing a rounded file-manager value with an exact byte count as if they had equal precision.

How can you estimate storage savings across a PDF archive?
For every file in the archive—or every file in a sample—record the original size as Oᵢ and the processed size as Cᵢ. Sum the two sets of byte counts before calculating the overall reduction:
- Add the original byte counts: ΣOᵢ.
- Add the processed byte counts: ΣCᵢ.
- Calculate estimated saved bytes: ΣOᵢ − ΣCᵢ.
- Calculate estimated reduction: 100 × (ΣOᵢ − ΣCᵢ) ÷ ΣOᵢ.
This weighted calculation reflects the amount of data in the collection. Averaging each document’s reduction percentage gives a small PDF the same influence as a very large one, even though their contribution to total storage differs.
When you cannot process every file
Group the archive into meaningful classes, such as scanned documents, image-rich brochures, and text-first reports. Sample representative files from each class, calculate its before-and-after byte totals, and scale those results to the number of files in that group. Record the sample size, how files were selected, which classes were included, and the assumption that the sample represents the unsampled files. If the sample misses an unusual class or a few exceptionally large PDFs, the estimate may not describe the full archive.

Call the result an estimate of file bytes saved. It is not automatically a forecast of billed storage or physical disk capacity: replication, retention, deduplication, allocation, and billing rules depend on the storage system. Adobe describes PDF optimization as a way to save storage costs, but apply your provider’s own rules before translating a byte estimate into a cost estimate. If you keep originals as well as optimized copies, include both in the storage total.
Why do some PDFs compress more than others?
A PDF is a container for different kinds of content, and the dominant content affects what an optimization can change. Adobe Acrobat’s Audit space usage report lists byte sizes and shares for elements such as text, images, fonts, forms, and comments. Use it to inspect a representative file before choosing settings.
- Image-heavy scans: Image resolution and encoding may be important, so settings that reduce image data can change visual detail.
- Text-first documents: Streams or structural information may offer more opportunity than image processing does.
- Files with forms, comments, bookmarks, or accessibility features: Check that the properties your workflow depends on remain usable after optimization.
Adobe notes that PDF settings affect image quality, font handling, color management, compatibility, and file size. Its documentation also describes object-level compression as affecting structural information such as bookmarks and accessibility features. A smaller byte count alone does not establish that a file remains suitable for its intended readers or uses.

How should you compare PDF compression methods?
Run each method on copies of the same representative PDFs, not on different files. Record the tool and version, settings, output bytes, and elapsed time if processing speed matters operationally. Then compare the result against the needs of the people who use the archive.
- Size: final bytes and percentage reduction, calculated consistently.
- Visual quality: inspect at the intended screen and print use, especially where fine text or image detail matters.
- Functionality: test text search, forms, links, comments, bookmarks, and accessibility features that the workflow requires.
- Compatibility: confirm the result opens in the readers and PDF versions your organization supports.
- Transformation type: distinguish lossless processing from lossy changes that discard image information.
- Operational effort: consider processing time and the work involved in a batch, alongside the bytes saved.
Adobe’s PDF creation documentation describes Flate compression as lossless and JPEG as lossy; results depend on settings. Adobe’s compression workflow lets users choose a compression level and aims to retain document quality, but that aim is not a check of a particular output file. Inspect important files yourself.
Structural compression versus image changes
qpdf documents options including stream compression, generalized decoding, recompressing Flate data, compression levels, object streams, and limited image optimization. Its documentation says qpdf does not resample images and does not otherwise modify content, except for possible DCT recompression in the described optimization case. That distinction matters if the goal is to reduce file size without downsampling images.

Ghostscript’s official PDF optimization article cautions that its pdfwrite output is not guaranteed to be smaller: processing can produce a more verbose representation. Keep the original until you have measured the output and checked the content and quality you need.
What should you conclude from a compression test?
Use the measured result for the files and settings you actually tested, and describe any archive-wide number as an estimate when it comes from a sample. The available evidence does not establish a current, broadly representative “typical PDF compression savings” percentage. A figure from one file or a format-specific example should not be presented as a prediction for a mixed archive.
