For a useful daily figure, run the intended setup for 24 hours and note the meter’s cumulative kilowatt-hours (kWh). A power-supply rating or software reading for the CPU or GPU is not the same as the computer’s total draw from the wall.
What the meter measures—and what it leaves out
A wall-side meter measures AC power drawn by whatever equipment is plugged into it. Put between the outlet and the PC’s main power cable, it captures the tower’s input, including losses inside its power supply. It does not include a separately powered monitor, speakers, or other devices.
Power is measured in watts (W); energy accumulated over time is measured in watt-hours (Wh) or kilowatt-hours (kWh). Because a PC’s draw changes with its workload and settings, a 24-hour energy total is generally more useful for estimating daily use than a momentary watt reading. Average watts can be calculated from that energy total.
The U.S. Department of Energy’s Federal Energy Management Program gives this general guidance for fluctuating loads: “If power consumption fluctuates, energy consumption should be measured over a period of time and then divided by the measurement period to determine average power.” Its page concerns standby and low-power measurements, not a YouTube-specific test protocol. How to measure your PC’s power use
- Choose an appropriate meter. Select a plug-in electricity usage meter that fits your local outlet and is rated for the equipment’s electrical load. Check whether it reports instantaneous watts and cumulative kWh; logging or a time history is useful if you want to see changes during the run. Prefer a meter that measures true power. No particular current meter model is established here.
- Connect only the equipment in scope. Plug the meter into the wall, then connect the PC’s main AC power cable to the meter. Do not put unrelated loads on the same meter. This first run measures the tower only.
- Set up representative playback. Start the YouTube video or playlist you intend to leave running. Use the actual resolution, browser, display configuration, and power settings you want to measure. Note interruptions, sleep settings, or playback stops that affect the run.
- Measure for 24 hours. Record the starting reading and the ending reading, or note the cumulative energy after 24 hours if the meter provides it. A longer interval captures changing consumption better than a single instantaneous reading.
- Use the right unit or calculate average watts. If the meter reports cumulative kWh after 24 hours, that is the PC’s measured daily energy use. To convert an energy total to average power, use
average W = (kWh × 1000) ÷ hours. For example, apply the formula to your measured kWh and elapsed hours; it is not a claim about a typical PC’s result. - Measure the rest of the setup separately if needed. To include the display, run a separate meter test on the monitor under the same brightness and power-mode conditions. Add the PC and monitor energy readings for a combined total. Repeat for separately powered speakers or other peripherals only if they belong in the total you want.
How to interpret the result
Daily energy and electricity cost
Use the measured kWh for the interval you care about. To estimate electricity cost, multiply that energy by your applicable electricity rate; rates vary by location and plan. The wall meter’s boundary matters: a tower-only reading cannot answer how much the tower-plus-monitor setup uses.
Software readings are supplementary
Hardware-monitoring software can help explain changes by showing selected component readings, such as CPU package power or GPU power. Those readings do not add up to an authoritative measurement of the whole PC’s AC draw from the wall, and they do not include a separate display. Use software telemetry to inspect component behavior, not as a substitute for the plug-in meter.

Keep comparisons like-for-like
If you compare runs, keep the PC hardware and playback state, video resolution and browser settings, display brightness and power mode, measurement boundary, and test duration consistent. Also compare the same kind of result: average watts against average watts, or cumulative kWh over equivalent periods.
Why a generic PC wattage figure is unreliable
There is no reliable universal wattage figure established for a PC playing YouTube continuously. Results depend on the particular computer and how it is configured, so measure the machine you plan to use rather than borrowing a generic estimate or television figure.

Published streaming energy figures often describe a different scope. Fraunhofer FOKUS / Video-Dev’s field-test account reports average consumption of 117.4 W for its tested televisions over 50 inches and 55.9 W for tested televisions of 50 inches or smaller; these are television sample findings, not PC benchmarks. Its reported average Eco Mode reduction of around 37% applies to the tested television display technologies, not as a guaranteed PC saving. The International Energy Agency’s 2020 analysis estimates 0.077 kWh per hour for a 2019 Netflix viewing scenario; it is not a measurement of YouTube playing on a PC or of a PC’s wall draw. Streaming estimates can include devices, networks, and data centers, while a plug-in meter on the PC measures only the connected local equipment. Read the IEA analysis and its assumptions.
