First define what “under two seconds” means for your page and audience, then use field and lab measurements to locate the bottleneck. Pages already serves uploaded static assets through its CDN with built-in caching, ETags, and compression where possible, so adding cache rules is not automatically an improvement.
Choose a precise two-second target
“Loads in two seconds” can describe different outcomes: a lab test’s load event, a particular visitor’s experience, or Largest Contentful Paint (LCP). Name the page or template, device, geography and network assumption, test method, and metric. For example: mobile LCP below two seconds at the 75th percentile.

Google’s current guidance calls LCP good at 2.5 seconds or less, so a two-second LCP goal is stricter than that benchmark. It is not a substitute for the other Core Web Vitals: good guidance thresholds are 200 milliseconds or less for Interaction to Next Paint (INP) and 0.1 or less for Cumulative Layout Shift (CLS). Assess these metrics alongside LCP, not as implied results of meeting the two-second target. See Google’s Web Vitals guidance.
Use the 75th percentile and separate mobile from desktop. A fast result on one device or in one run does not establish that most visitors meet the goal.

Establish a baseline with field and lab data
Run the public page URL through PageSpeed Insights and record its field and lab results separately. Field data reflects real visitors; lab data offers a more controlled way to reproduce and investigate problems. They can differ because visitors use different devices and networks, and because lab conditions are not the same as the traffic represented in field data.
A new or low-traffic site may not have field data. Missing CrUX data is not evidence that the site passes. Use lab results to investigate while field data accumulates. Cloudflare Speed can also provide synthetic and real-user testing, recommendations, and Origin Analytics where available; treat those as diagnostic options, not proof that a particular change will improve user outcomes. Find what is delaying the page
Inspect the LCP element and the critical path leading to it. Determine whether the wait is before the first byte, during transfer of the main image or font, or while the browser waits on render-blocking CSS or JavaScript. Also inspect image dimensions and formats, total asset sizes, and third-party scripts.
- Large or poorly sized images: Check whether the LCP image is much larger than its displayed dimensions or uses an unnecessarily heavy format.
- CSS and JavaScript: Look for large payloads and resources that block rendering or delay the content that becomes LCP.
- Third-party scripts: Identify analytics, marketing, and other external code that adds transfer or execution work.
- Origin response: If the delay occurs before the response arrives, investigate origin response and delivery rather than focusing only on image compression.
- Cache or configuration behavior: Verify that custom rules are addressing a measured issue and are not adding freshness or correctness risks.
Cloudflare Speed and Origin Analytics can help investigate delivery and origin response where available. Cloudflare’s performance guidance also covers caching, image and asset optimization, and monitoring; its asset guidance describes minification and compression, as well as Zaraz server-side loading for analytics and marketing tags. These features are options to evaluate against observed payload and rendering behavior, not a checklist that every site must enable. See Cloudflare Speed.

Understand what Pages already does
Cloudflare Pages serves uploaded static assets through its CDN and Tiered Cache, applies built-in caching defaults, sends ETags for 200 responses, and serves Gzip or Brotli where possible. Pages also enables Early Hints automatically on pages.dev and custom domains. Early Hints uses preload or preconnect Link headers so browsers can begin fetching resources before the full response is prepared; the Pages documentation says it cannot be disabled.
Cloudflare advises avoiding custom caching in most situations because Pages defaults are designed to cache extensively while keeping content current. A custom rule for immutable, hashed assets may help in a particular setup, but added rules can make deployments stale or interfere with redirects and Pages Functions. Static images, CSS, and JavaScript are cacheable by default in Cloudflare’s general cache documentation; dynamic HTML is not cached by default. A Cache Rule can change that behavior, but careless caching of personalized content can expose one visitor’s information to another.

Check the platform behavior and caveats in Cloudflare Pages: Serving Pages and Cloudflare Cache documentation. Start with the defaults unless measurements identify a specific delivery problem; if you change caching or headers, verify fresh deployments, redirects, Functions, and any content that depends on cookies or session state.

Choose a fix that matches the evidence

Cloudflare’s Images documentation describes its resizing and format-conversion options. Do not assume that an optional product or feature is necessary to reach a performance goal; verify current commercial terms before choosing one.

Make one change, then retest
- Record the baseline: Save PageSpeed Insights field and lab results for the same URL, noting the device segment and available metric data.
- Inspect the critical path: Identify the LCP element and whether the main delay is response time, resource transfer, render blocking, or other work.
- Choose one targeted change: For example, resize a heavy image, reserve its dimensions, defer a nonessential script, or reduce CSS or JavaScript. Avoid bundling unrelated changes together.
- Repeat the same lab test: Use the same URL and conditions so the comparison is meaningful, then confirm the page still works as expected.
- Monitor field performance: Track mobile and desktop separately as real-user data accumulates; lab results help diagnose but do not establish what visitors experience.
- Validate correctness: After cache or header changes, check that personalized content remains private and that deployments, redirects, and Pages Functions behave correctly.
What a successful result does—and does not—show
A repeatable result below two seconds is meaningful only when its metric, device segment, and measurement method are clear. A lab run below that mark does not prove that real visitors meet it, and an LCP result does not by itself establish good INP or CLS. Keep the target tied to the data you can actually measure, and make performance changes only when they address a demonstrated bottleneck.
