How to Measure AI Model Cost per Completed Task

Calculate AI cost per accepted task by counting spend across every attempt and dividing by successful completions—then report coverage, quality and latency too.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

To measure AI model cost per completed task, add up the cost of every attempt in a representative workload—including failed runs, retries and fallback calls—then divide by the number of tasks that meet a defined acceptance test. Report that figure alongside success rate, workload coverage, quality and latency; a cheap result on a narrow set of solvable tasks is not evidence that a model can replace another across your workload.

Define what counts as a completed task

Choose a unit of work and a pass/fail condition before comparing models. Examples include a test suite passing, a support ticket reaching its closed state, or a generated dataset having the correct row count. A response being returned is not, by itself, proof that the work is complete.

For workflows where partial completion matters, report it as a separate outcome rather than counting it as a full success. Use the same acceptance check for every candidate, and make sure the check reflects what users or downstream systems actually require.

Set the cost boundary

For an API-cost comparison, count every billable model request made for each task. Include retries and fallback-model calls, not just the first request or the final model in a chain. Failed runs remain in total spend even though they do not increase the accepted-completion count.

An integrated 350W power supply ensures stable and reliable output for demanding computing tasks and fully loaded extended configurations.

If you want a fully loaded operating-cost figure, state that scope and include other material costs in the workflow: tool use and retrieval, evaluator or guardrail calls, infrastructure, and required human review or correction. API spend and wider operating cost answer different questions, so label the result clearly.

For a provider-specific example, Anthropic’s pricing guidance explains how to total the applicable token categories across requests, including uncached input, cache writes and reads, and output. Its Usage and Cost API reports aggregate usage. Rates and billing rules vary by model and can change; use the current schedule and usage records for an actual calculation rather than treating illustrative rates as a quote.

Run a representative comparison

  1. Build the task set. Sample production work in proportions that resemble real traffic. Preserve task types and difficulty levels that matter to your use case.
  2. Hold the evaluation conditions steady. Give each candidate the same tasks, success checks, routing rules and relevant quality threshold. If the production workflow uses retries, fallbacks or tools, evaluate that workflow rather than an isolated first response.
  3. Repeat stochastic workloads. Run multiple trials where outputs or tool paths can vary, and retain failure reasons. Segment results by task type or difficulty when a different task mix could distort the overall average.
  4. Use a credible grader. When possible, verify outcomes with executable checks, such as whether tests pass or the expected state changed. NVIDIA’s guidance on cost per successful task describes executable verification as the strongest approach when available. If using an LLM judge, validate its scores against human ratings on a sample.

Calculate cost per accepted completion

For a cohort of tasks, use:

Cost per accepted completion = total spend across all attempts ÷ number of accepted completions

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if a run spends $120 in total and 80 tasks pass the acceptance test, its cost per accepted completion is $1.50. The $120 includes spend on unsuccessful tasks, retries and fallbacks within the chosen cost boundary; the denominator includes only accepted completions.

  • Enterprise-Grade Thermal Solution: Vapor chamber heatsink with industrial Honeywell PTM7950 thermal interface material ensures reliable cooling under sustained professional loads.

Average cost per attempt divided by the success rate can produce the same result only when both figures describe the same representative run population and retry policy. In practice, total spend divided by accepted completions is easier to audit and less likely to mix incompatible averages.

Report more than one number

Cost per accepted completion is useful only when readers can see what the model completed, how reliably, and at what level of quality. Pair it with these measures:

  • ALL-DAY BATTERY LIFE — MacBook Pro delivers the same exceptional performance whether it’s running on battery or plugged in.*
  • MACOS RUNS APPS FAST — All your go-to apps run lightning fast in macOS, including built-in apps like FaceTime and Messages. Plus, built-in virus protection and free software updates help keep your Mac running smoothly and securely.
  • Success rate and coverage: Show how many tasks passed and what share of the whole workload the model handled. A model that succeeds cheaply on a narrow subset may not be a viable replacement.
  • Quality and verification strength: State the acceptance test and whether outputs were checked with executable rules, human review or an LLM judge. Weak grading can make unit costs look better by counting unacceptable work as complete.
  • Consistency: Show variation across repeated trials where results are stochastic; a single point estimate can hide unreliable performance.
  • Latency and work performed: Include elapsed time and relevant workflow activity. Track tool calls separately from model turns when that distinction affects cost or performance.
  • Cost scope and workload mix: Label the result API-only or fully loaded, and document the task mix. A shift toward easier or harder tasks can change a blended average without any change in model behavior.

Read benchmark figures in context

A useful illustration comes from Arize AI and Fireworks’ July 2026 benchmark: 2,400 runs across 40 Terminal-Bench tasks and 10 models, with six trials per task-model combination. The authors reported $626 in API spend for that benchmark setup—not a general estimate of production costs. They reported a 95% pass-rate confidence interval of about ±6 percentage points, which they considered sufficient to rank cost per success in their study but not to reliably distinguish close neighboring models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In that specific evaluation, gpt-oss-120b had a 33% pass rate and a reported cost of $0.054 per successful task; GPT-5.5 had a 67% pass rate and a reported cost of $0.636 per successful task. Those measurements reflect the study’s task set, harness, model versions and pricing assumptions, not a universal ranking or current quote. The contrast also shows why cost per success needs coverage beside it: the lower figure does not mean the model completed as much of the workload.

Do not choose a model on token price or cost per attempt alone. Lower attempt costs can be outweighed by extra requests, retries, failures or review. Likewise, the lowest cost per accepted completion does not establish that the model can cover enough of your actual workload. Recheck provider prices and billing rules when you calculate costs, and date and describe any benchmark results you publish.

Use the results to improve the workflow

Inspect traces and failure records for expensive loops, retries, malformed responses and escalation causes. Change routing or workflow design only when you can compare the revised setup against the same task set, acceptance checks and cost boundary. Then rerun the evaluation and report both the unit cost and the workload coverage.

Evaluation and observability software, including tools used to inspect traces, can help with this work, but it is optional: the method depends on a clear outcome test, consistent task set and complete cost records, not a particular product.
