The smallest clear width—after accounting for trim, handles, pipes and other projections—controls whether it fits. Also confirm the cart will not block an aisle, cabinet doors or appliance access.
Measure the parking space at several heights
- Choose the exact parking spot. Use a rigid tape measure to check the clear width near the floor, halfway up and near the top. Walls, cabinets and counters may not be parallel.
- Use the smallest usable width. Include anything that projects into the opening, such as baseboards, cabinet faces, door trim, pipes, outlets and appliance handles.
- Measure usable depth and height. Measure from the back boundary to the first obstruction. If the cart must sit beneath a counter, shelf, sill or fixture, measure the clear height there too.
For a small-space cart, Arbasa likewise recommends checking the opening at floor, middle and top, along with depth, height and caster movement. Arbasa’s measuring guide is practical consumer guidance, not a building-code authority.

Compare the opening with the cart’s full outside dimensions
Check the exact product listing or manufacturer documentation for outside width, depth and height. A shelf’s dimensions or the cart body’s nominal size may not include casters, axle caps, side handles, towel bars or other projections. Compare the full footprint with your smallest usable opening, not just the advertised shelf width.

Check the route, turning space and nearby fixtures
A cart can fit in its parking gap yet be impractical to move or use. Check the whole route from the parking spot to where you plan to work, including doorways, turns, thresholds and caster movement. Make sure you can pull it out without hitting cabinet doors, drawers or appliances.
Before buying, mark the proposed footprint on the floor with painter’s tape. Open nearby doors and drawers, check the oven and dishwasher, and walk the intended route. Confirm the cart will not obstruct appliance ventilation or service access where those matter.

Check the aisle left when the cart is parked
The National Kitchen & Bath Association’s Kitchen Planning Guideline 6 says: “The width of a work aisle should be at least 42” (1067 mm) for one cook and at least 48” (1219 mm) for multiple cooks. Measure between the counter frontage, tall cabinets, and/or appliances.” These are NKBA planning recommendations, not cart-specific dimensions or universal legal minimums; state or local codes may also apply. Use a final fit check before choosing a cart
- The narrowest clear measurement at any height is the controlling width.
- Cart dimensions must include wheels, handles and other outward projections.
- Depth, height, turns and the travel route matter as much as width.
- Test nearby doors, drawers and appliances with the cart footprint marked in place.
- Check the remaining aisle and any appliance access; there is no universal cart-clearance buffer established by the cited guidance.
