For a child who can stand, measure barefoot on a firm floor against a flat wall: keep the child upright and looking straight ahead, use a level rigid object to mark the top of the head, then measure from the floor to the mark. For children under two, growth guidance generally calls for measuring lying-down length instead of standing height.
What you need
- A firm, level floor and a flat wall without molding.
- A flat, rigid object, such as a ruler or book, to mark the top of the head.
- A metal tape measure to measure from the floor to the mark.
- A pencil or other suitable marker for the wall.
How to measure a child who can stand
- Choose a wall with no baseboard or molding that would keep the child’s heels away from it. Have the child remove shoes, bulky clothing, hats, and hair ornaments. Move or flatten hairstyles that could interfere with the reading.
- Ask the child to stand straight with feet flat and together, legs straight, arms at their sides, and shoulders level. The child should look straight ahead. Where their body shape allows, their head, shoulders, buttocks, and heels should touch the wall.
- Place the flat, rigid object level against the wall and lower it until it touches the crown of the child’s head. Keep your eyes level with the object so you can mark its lower edge accurately.
- Mark the wall where the lower edge meets it. Measure vertically from the floor to the mark with a metal tape measure.
- Record the result to the nearest 1/8 inch or 0.1 centimetre, as specified by the CDC’s home measurement guidance.
A flat object such as cardboard or a chopping board can also be used to make the mark; Cambridge University Hospitals’ guidance for children aged two and older describes a similar approach using a wall or door frame.

For children under two, measure length lying down
Growth guidance distinguishes standing height from recumbent length, which is measured with the child lying down. The WHO training job aid advises measuring length for children under two and standing height for children aged two or older who can stand. If a child cannot be measured in the usual position, the job aid gives a protocol conversion: add about 0.7 cm to a standing measurement for an under-two child to estimate length, or subtract about 0.7 cm from lying-down length to estimate height for a child aged two or older who cannot stand. Note the actual method used rather than treating converted measurements as directly interchangeable.
Record the measurement so it is useful later
Write down the date, measurement, and unit. Also note whether it was standing height or lying-down length. That information helps a clinician understand how the value was obtained and compare it appropriately with later measurements.
#1 Best Overall
- Metric measurement: the height indicator tape ruler has 2 units of measurements, on the right side is a unit of measurement of 0 to 213 centimeter, on the left side is 0 to 83 inches, which can measure the height of most people; The width of each one is 1.8 inch
- Considerate design：the font is black and bright red to make the numbers more visible; 2 Kinds of measurement units can meet the measurement needs of different people; Compared with other height ruler, its width is large enough and can be cropped as needed
- Double sided: the design of double sided adhesive tape is suitable for most kinds of wall, which is convenient and fast to paste, sticky and firm, and can be maintained for a long time; For good results, do not apply to textured surfaces
- Cropped height: you may want to use one level to ensure that it is straight; In the case of obstruction, like floorboards or moldings, simply measure the obstacle's height and remove that length from the ruler with scissors
- Applicable Occasion: wall growth chart is well suitable for most occasions and convenient measurement such as hospital, station, office and home; It is a practical tool to record the height
In the United States, the CDC recommends WHO growth standard charts from birth through age two and CDC growth charts from age two onward. Growth charts help track a child’s growth and contribute to an overall health picture; they are not a stand-alone diagnostic tool. See the CDC chart recommendations and its growth chart information. A single home reading is only one data point, and small differences between readings should not be treated as a growth trend without appropriate clinical context.
