On iPad, you mark emails as read in the Mail app by opening the message list you want to clear, tapping More and then Select, choosing the messages, and tapping Mark then Mark as Read. Apple’s iPad Mail guide documents this for selected messages. It does not promise a universal Select All control in every view, so the steps below check the scope of what you are clearing before you act.
Mark a set of unread emails as read
Apple’s guide covers this under the heading “Quickly mark multiple emails as read.” The steps are the same whether you are in a single mailbox or a list of messages from several sources.

- Open the Mail app and go to the mailbox or message list whose unread messages you want to change.
- While you are viewing the message list, tap More, then tap Select.
- Select the messages you want to mark. Apple’s guide describes selecting individual messages and does not describe a single control that selects everything in every view.
- Tap Mark at the bottom of the message list, then tap Mark as Read.

The word “all” can mean several different things in Mail, and the action only affects the messages you have selected. Choose the scope before you start.

One mailbox
Open the mailbox first, such as your inbox, then use the selection steps above. This is the safest option when you have more than one account and only want to clear one of them.
A broader mailbox view
If you want messages beyond a single mailbox, check the mailbox list and open the broader view you need, such as All Mail where it is available on your device. Confirm the list you are looking at before you tap Mark as Read, because the action applies to what you selected in that view.

Category tabs
Mail can show category tabs as well as mailbox lists. Apple says that selecting a message in Transactions, Updates, or Promotions selects all messages from that sender within that category. This is useful for clearing a newsletter or notification stream, but it can select more than you expect if you only meant one message. Check the selection count before you tap Mark.

Why the Home Screen badge may not drop to zero
The unread count on the Mail icon on the Home Screen reflects unread messages in the Primary category by default. If you have unread messages in Promotions, Updates, or Transactions, the badge can stay the same even after you have cleared your Primary messages.

To include all categories in the badge, go to Settings > Notifications > Mail > Customize Notifications, then turn on All Unread Messages. A badge that still shows a number after you mark messages as read does not by itself mean the action failed. Check the mailbox or category you are viewing before you assume the messages were not changed.
If you cannot find the controls
- No Select option under More: confirm you are on a message list, not a single open message. The Select and Mark controls appear in the list view.
- Select All is missing: this is expected in some views. Select the messages manually, or open a narrower mailbox that holds only the messages you want to clear.
- Messages in other categories still show unread: open the relevant category tab and repeat the steps there.
Requirements
Mail is included with iPadOS and is a free app. It supports accounts from iCloud, Gmail, Exchange, Yahoo, Outlook, and other providers, according to the App Store listing for Mail. You do not need to buy anything to use the steps above.
