To manually install a modpack, match the pack’s exact Minecraft version and modloader build, install that loader in an empty server directory, upload and extract the pack’s server files, and start the loader-generated entry point rather than the vanilla server JAR. Then complete the EULA and server.properties setup, and give every player a client with the same compatible version, loader, and mod set.
Running a modpack with friends? Godlike.Host offers modded Minecraft server hosting with one-click modpacks (CurseForge, FTB, Technic) and free DDoS protection.
This guide covers Minecraft: Java Edition servers using Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt. A server-pack download is the safest route. If the author provides only a client pack, you must separate client-only files from server content using the pack’s documentation and your startup logs; there is no universal client-only-mod list.

Modded Minecraft is not compatible merely because two packs have similar names. The server and each client must agree on the pack’s declared Minecraft version, loader family, and loader build. Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt are separate loader families: a Forge server cannot run a Fabric pack, and changing only the loader’s minor build can still cause a crash or rejected connection.
| Record from the pack release | Why it matters | Where to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Minecraft version | Mods are compiled for particular game versions; a different version can make dependencies unavailable. | The pack’s file page, profile, manifest, or launcher entry. |
| Loader family | Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, and Quilt use different server installers and launch processes. | The release label and pack manifest. |
| Loader build | Mods may require an exact or minimum loader build. Do not substitute a “close” build. | The manifest, profile details, or the author’s installation notes. |
| Pack version | Configuration, scripts, dependencies, and world behavior can change between releases. | The selected release file, not just the pack’s current name. |
CurseForge’s support documentation describes mods and profiles as compatible only when their game version and modloader requirements line up. Treat the values in the selected release as a deployment specification, not a suggestion.

Choose the right installation source
Use a server pack when one exists
A server pack is normally assembled by the pack author. It usually omits client-only material, includes the intended directory layout, and may include launch scripts, configuration, scripts, and default settings already arranged for a dedicated server. Download the server pack belonging to the same release as the client pack.
Do not mix a server pack from one release with a client pack from another. If the author publishes separate “server files” and “client files,” treat both labels and their version numbers as part of the compatibility check.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Use a client pack only when no server pack is published
A client download can contain menu assets, shaders, graphical enhancements, keybinds, performance helpers, and other files that have no place on a dedicated server. It can still provide useful server content—such as mods, config, defaultconfigs, scripts, and data—but you must inspect it and follow the author’s notes.
Because client-only status is mod- and version-specific, do not delete files based on a generic Internet list. Check each mod’s documentation, the pack’s manifest, and the first meaningful server error. Keep a copy of the untouched client archive so you can restore a file while diagnosing a missing dependency.
Prepare the server safely
Confirm host capabilities
Before installing, verify that the host allows custom modpacks and gives you access to the server directory through a file manager, FTP, or SFTP. You also need a way to select the required Java runtime and to read startup logs. Some managed panels allow only a predefined server type; if the panel does not permit custom loader files or a custom startup command, a manual installation may not be possible there.
- Access to the server directory and its upload or extraction tools.
- Permission to run a custom Forge, Fabric, NeoForge, or Quilt loader.
- Control over the Java executable or a host-supported Java selection.
- Log access, including the first startup error and the full crash report.
- A backup method for the world and configuration files.
Create an empty directory or back up the existing one
For a new server, create a dedicated, empty directory. This prevents an old vanilla JAR, stale libraries, or an earlier pack from being launched accidentally. For an existing world, stop the server first and copy the entire world directory plus the server configuration before replacing files. At minimum, preserve the world, server.properties, whitelist and operator files, and the config and defaultconfigs directories.
Never overwrite a live world while the server process is running. A backup made after files have already been replaced cannot reliably restore the previous state.

Manual installation: step by step
1. Record the selected release
- Open the pack’s release or file page.
- Write down the exact Minecraft version, loader family, loader build, and pack version.
- Check whether the author provides a server pack, server files, or a separate dedicated-server guide.
- Download the client release that matches the server release so players can reproduce the same environment.
A loader label such as “Forge” is not enough. Record the complete build shown by the pack author and use that value during installation.
2. Install the matching server loader
Run the official installer or installation procedure for the recorded loader while targeting the empty server directory. The installer should create loader-specific libraries and a server launch entry point. For Fabric, this commonly includes a server-launch JAR; Forge, NeoForge, and Quilt may create a generated script, libraries, and a versioned server JAR. The exact filenames vary by loader and release.
Install only the family named by the pack. Installing Forge because it is familiar will not make a Fabric or Quilt pack work. If the installer offers a choice of Minecraft version or loader build, select the values recorded in step 1 rather than the newest available option.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Upload and extract the pack files
- Use the host’s file manager, FTP, or SFTP to upload the server-pack archive into the server directory.
- Extract it in that directory, not in an extra nested folder.
- Confirm that the extracted
mods, config, defaultconfigs, scripts, and data directories sit alongside the loader-generated files. - If extraction created a folder such as
pack-name/server-files, move the contents up one level or change the startup directory so the loader can see them. - Keep the original archive outside the live directory or in a separate backup location.
A common mistake is uploading the archive to the host’s home directory while the startup command points to a different server directory. The files and the process must use the same working directory.
4. Select the loader-generated startup entry point
Change the host’s startup command or selected server JAR to the entry point created by the loader. Do not point the panel at the ordinary vanilla server JAR. A Fabric installation may be started with a command such as java -jar fabric-server-launch.jar nogui when that is the filename created by the installer; other loaders commonly require their generated script or a versioned loader JAR. Use the exact file supplied by your installer and host documentation.
If a panel has both a “server type” setting and a separate “custom JAR” field, set both consistently. A correct file in the directory will not help if the panel continues launching an old vanilla file.
5. Complete the first startup and EULA
- Start the server once from the loader entry point.
- Wait for it to stop or report that the EULA must be accepted.
- Open
eula.txt, read the license, and changeeula=falsetoeula=trueonly if you agree to it. - Save the file and start the same loader entry point again.
The first successful run may create additional directories and configuration files. Let that process finish before changing settings. If it stops with a loader or dependency error, fix that error before attempting to tune gameplay settings.

6. Configure server.properties
After the loader has generated the normal server files, edit server.properties for the intended world and access policy. Settings commonly reviewed at this stage include:
level-namefor the world directory to load or create.gamemodeanddifficultyfor the server’s gameplay defaults.white-listand the whitelist entries if access should be restricted.- The server’s listening port and any host-specific binding setting.
Stop the server before editing the file, use the exact property spelling, and restart it afterward. If a world already exists, make sure level-name points to that backed-up directory rather than creating a new world with a similar name.
7. Install only the server-appropriate mods
For a server pack, copy the supplied mods directory as provided unless the author says otherwise. For a client-only pack, compare each mod with the author’s documentation and remove items explicitly identified as client-only. Keep required server-side libraries and gameplay mods, and preserve the matching configuration and default-configuration files.
Do not assume that a mod with a graphical feature is harmless on a server, or that a library can be omitted because players also install it. The loader’s dependency message is the authoritative indication for the selected release.
8. Align every player’s client
Each player should install the same Minecraft version, loader family, and compatible loader build, then install the client release corresponding to the server pack. A player can still be rejected if one mod is missing, a required dependency has a different version, or a client contains a server-required mod at the wrong build.
Some mods are intentionally client-only and should remain on players’ computers but not on the server. Conversely, a server-side gameplay mod may be required on the server even when it has no visible client interface. Follow the pack author’s client/server instructions rather than copying one directory blindly to both sides.
9. Test from a controlled first connection
- Start the server and wait for its normal ready message.
- Read the log from the beginning of the startup attempt, not only the final exception cascade.
- Connect with one client that uses the verified pack release.
- Test joining, world loading, basic interaction, and any pack-specific systems before inviting more players.
- Stop the server cleanly and make a backup after the first successful startup.
If remote players cannot connect, check the configured listening port, firewall, router, and host networking rules. The official Minecraft Java server guidance covers server-directory setup, server.properties, and router documentation for port forwarding.

When there is no server-pack download
This situation needs deliberate file selection rather than a one-click conversion. The loader and Minecraft version still come from the pack manifest or profile; the difference is that you must assemble the server directory yourself.
- Install the exact loader build in a clean server directory.
- Make a backup copy of the original client pack.
- Inspect the pack’s manifest and documentation for required dependencies and server instructions.
- Copy server-relevant
mods, config, defaultconfigs, scripts, and data into the loader directory. - Remove only mods or files documented as client-only, such as items intended exclusively for rendering, menus, keybinds, or client performance.
- Start the loader and use the earliest meaningful error to identify missing libraries, wrong versions, or an invalid file.
- Repeat the comparison with the client list after the server reaches its ready state.
There is no reliable universal list of client-only mods because the answer changes with the Minecraft version, loader, mod release, and pack author’s configuration. A server-pack download remains preferable whenever it is available.
Manual-install options compared
| Option | Loader and version control | File access | Java control | Backups and worlds | Logs and troubleshooting | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Host file manager | Good if custom loaders and JARs are permitted. | Browser upload and extraction; large archives may be slower. | Depends on panel controls. | Often includes panel backups, but verify retention and restore behavior. | Usually visible in the panel. | Convenient, but restricted panels may hide startup or Java settings. |
| FTP | Good when the host allows custom server files. | Separate FTP client; extraction may require the panel or SSH. | Depends on the host. | You manage copies and downloads directly. | Log download is available if permissions allow. | More control than a locked panel, but more manual file handling. |
| SFTP | Good for precise loader and directory management. | Encrypted transfer and direct directory access. | Often paired with shell or host runtime controls. | Easy to copy worlds and configuration files before changes. | Strong access to logs and generated crash reports. | Requires credentials and a client that supports SFTP. |
| Managed modpack deployment | Simple when the host offers the exact loader and pack release. | Usually a panel selector or one-click import. | Typically selected by the host. | May be automated; confirm what is included. | Panel logs are usually available. | Less administration, but you may be unable to use an unsupported pack or custom launch command. |
The right choice depends on whether you value direct administration or fewer file operations. Regardless of transfer method, the compatibility rules and loader-generated startup requirement do not change.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Troubleshooting the first startup
The server starts as vanilla
The panel is probably launching the ordinary Minecraft server JAR, or the loader was installed in a different directory from the one being launched. Check the startup command, working directory, and generated loader files. Stop the process, select the loader entry point, and start again. A vanilla-looking log with no loader banner is a strong sign that the wrong entry point is running.

The loader crashes immediately
Recheck all four recorded values: Minecraft version, loader family, loader build, and pack version. A Forge loader cannot load Fabric mods, and a pack built for one game version may fail before reading its configuration on another. Remove any manually substituted loader or mod version and install the exact release named by the pack.
A dependency is missing
Read the first dependency message and identify the named mod and required version. Compare it with the pack manifest and the server’s mods directory. Upload the required library in the correct directory, remove duplicate versions, and restart. Do not solve a dependency message by downloading an unrelated “latest” file; the required build must match the pack.
The client connects, then the server rejects a mod
Compare the client and server mod lists by filename and version. Remove client-only content from the server, add any required server-side dependency, and make sure both sides use the pack’s compatible release. If only one player fails, compare that player’s installation with a known-good client rather than changing the server blindly.
Java or the launcher fails
Check which Java executable the host or launcher is actually using and whether the loader documentation supports that runtime for the selected Minecraft release. A Java setting in a desktop launcher does not automatically change the Java runtime used by a hosted server. Select the host-supported runtime explicitly, then retry the loader-generated command.

The server loads the wrong world
Stop the server and inspect level-name. It must exactly match the intended world directory. Restore the backup before experimenting if a new world has already been created, and confirm that the world directory was uploaded at the server root rather than nested inside an extra archive folder.
Players cannot reach the server
After the server itself reaches a ready state, verify the configured listening port, firewall rules, router forwarding, and the address players are using. A connection problem is separate from mod compatibility: first establish that the server is listening, then diagnose rejected mods or missing dependencies in the client handshake.
The host reports an inaccessible JAR or permission error
Check filename case, directory permissions, and whether the panel startup path points to the current directory. Re-upload or re-extract the loader files if the archive was truncated. Ensure the server account can read the JAR and libraries, and do not leave two competing startup JARs selected in the panel.
Updating the pack without losing the world
Treat an update as a new deployment, not as a casual file overwrite. Read the target release notes, record its Minecraft and loader requirements, and make a complete backup before changing files.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Stop the server cleanly.
- Copy the world,
server.properties, whitelist and operator files, and pack configuration directories. - Check whether the new release changes the loader family, loader build, required Java runtime, or world-generation behavior.
- Install the required loader in a staging directory or clearly separated backup location.
- Apply the new server pack and compare the resulting
modsand configuration files. - Start the updated server and read the complete log before allowing players to join.
- Keep the previous files and backup until the new release has been tested.
Never assume that a world created by one pack release is automatically safe to open with another. Follow the pack author’s migration notes and keep a restorable copy before the first update launch.
Final deployment checklist
- The server is Minecraft: Java Edition.
- Minecraft version, loader family, loader build, and pack version are recorded from one release.
- A matching server pack was used when available.
- The loader was installed in the same directory that the host launches.
- The archive was extracted without an extra nested directory.
- The startup command uses the loader-generated entry point, not the vanilla JAR.
- The EULA was accepted through
eula.txtonly after it was read. server.propertiespoints to the intended world and access settings.- Client-only files were kept off the server, while required server dependencies were retained.
- Every player has the same compatible client release, Minecraft version, and loader.
- The first meaningful startup error has been resolved before later errors are considered.
- The world and configuration files have a tested backup.
Bottom line
Manual modpack installation is reliable when you treat compatibility and the launch path as the two hard requirements. Match the exact release, install its exact loader, prefer the author’s server pack, extract files into the directory being launched, and start the loader-generated entry point. Then align clients, configure the world, and use the earliest log error to correct any remaining dependency or file-selection problem.
