To find programs that can open a file, first identify what its contents actually are, then check candidate apps’ documented format support. The filename extension and your computer’s default app are useful clues, but neither proves that an app is the only compatible choice—or that a file is what its name suggests.
1. Check the full filename and where it came from
Start with the complete filename, including its extension. If your file manager hides extensions, enable their display so you can see the actual suffix. Keep compound extensions such as .tar.gz intact: the final part alone may not describe the format well.

Consider the file’s origin, too. A document exported by a particular application, or a file copied from a device, may give you a useful lead about its format. But an extension is only a hint: it can be missing, misleading, or incorrect. Renaming a file does not convert its contents; it only changes the clue some systems use to identify or handle it.

On macOS or Linux, use file
In Terminal, run file "path/to/file", replacing the example path with your file’s path. On systems with GNU file, you can request a MIME type with file --mime-type "path/to/file". The utility examines file contents using tests that can include byte patterns; Linux’s magic rules describe patterns at particular offsets and checks for more complex formats.

A result such as data, text, or a generic MIME type may not identify an exact format. Content-based detection is helpful, but it is not conclusive: some formats have no distinctive signature, and file-signature checks cannot identify every format reliably. MDN’s Media types (MIME types) guide explains both the use and limits of magic-number detection.
On Linux, ask the desktop MIME database
Run xdg-mime query filetype "path/to/file" to ask the desktop MIME database what type it assigns. The shared MIME-info rules can use filename patterns and, under specified conditions, inspect contents with magic rules. They may still return a generic result such as application/octet-stream for unidentified binary data or text/plain for unidentified text. Those results do not establish a precise format or tell you which application is safe to use.

3. Find candidate applications and check what they support
Search for the exact format name or MIME type alongside terms such as “supported formats” or “open.” Prefer current documentation from the software publisher, and check that it covers the file’s precise format version and any relevant variant or container. A program may support viewing but not editing, or may support one version of a format but not another.
On Linux, an installed application’s .desktop entry may declare supported MIME types in its MimeType field. That declaration can help identify candidates, but it is not a complete catalog of all applications capable of reading a format. Linux keeps application associations and the default selection as separate questions.

4. Check the configured default without mistaking it for a compatibility list
Linux
Run xdg-mime query default "MIME-TYPE", substituting the MIME type you identified. The command returns a desktop file ID, which may not be a friendly application name. A graphical “Open With” dialog can also show other applications available in that system context.
Neither the command nor the dialog proves that the displayed app is the only one that can open the format. The Freedesktop.org Association between MIME types and applications specification explains that finding all associated applications and finding the default application use almost completely unrelated algorithms.

Windows and macOS
On Windows, file associations commonly use extensions to decide which application launches when you double-click a file. “Open with” can show or let you choose handlers available in that system context, but it does not certify that an application fully supports the format. Confirm support in the app publisher’s documentation.

On macOS, Finder’s “Open With” menu and Get Info can show configured applications and the selected default. The file utility is also available in Terminal for identifying many formats from their contents. On both systems, the configured association and the application’s actual format support are different things.

5. Verify compatibility and test safely
Before opening a file, confirm that the candidate supports its exact format and version. Compare options by whether they can view, edit, or convert the file; whether the publisher documents that support; and whether the app is available for your operating system and version.
- If the file is trusted and the application documents support, try opening a copy when practical so the original remains unchanged.
- Do not treat an extension change as a conversion; it does not rewrite the file’s contents.
- Do not run an unfamiliar executable or enable macros or scripts just to see what happens.
- If detection returns only a generic type, gather more context about the file’s origin rather than choosing a random application.
What the clues do—and do not—tell you
| Clue | What it can tell you | What it does not prove |
|---|---|---|
| Filename extension | A likely format or the handler a system may use | That the contents match the suffix, or that one app is the only compatible choice |
| File signature or MIME detection | A likely format inferred from contents or database rules | That every format has a detectable signature, or that the result is always exact |
| Default application | Which app is configured to handle a type in that system context | That it is the only app capable of opening the format |
| Publisher’s supported-format documentation | Whether the app claims support for a stated format or version | That the file is valid, safe, or compatible with every variant |
The practical sequence is: use the name and origin as clues, identify the contents where possible, look for documented support, and test cautiously only when appropriate.
