To set a time zone by hand in Windows 11, turn off automatic time-zone selection in Settings > Time & language > Date & time, then pick the zone you want from the Time zone dropdown. Microsoft’s official guide, which covers Windows 11 and Windows 10, describes this same procedure. The steps below also explain what the manual choice changes, what it leaves alone, and how to undo it.
Set the time zone manually, step by step
- Open Start, then select Settings.
- Select Time & language, then Date & time.
- Find Set time zone automatically and switch it Off. The time-zone dropdown is not editable while this setting is On.
- Open the Time zone dropdown and select the zone you need.
Once the setting is off, Windows keeps the zone you chose and no longer updates it based on the device’s location. Check the clock in the taskbar after you make the change; it should reflect the offset of the zone you selected.

Manual time zone is not the same as a manual clock
The same page contains a second control, Set time automatically, which governs the clock value itself, along with a Change button for entering a date and time by hand. These are separate settings. Turning off automatic time-zone selection does not stop the clock from synchronizing, and changing the clock value does not change the zone. If the clock is wrong after you change the zone, the problem is usually the clock setting rather than the zone, so check that first.
Daylight saving time with a manual zone
Microsoft states that daylight saving time is adjusted automatically when automatic time-zone selection is On. With automatic selection Off, the separate Adjust for daylight saving time automatically control is the one that matters. Review it after you choose a zone, especially if you live in a region that observes seasonal clock changes, so that the clock moves forward or back on the dates you expect.

Why Windows sets the zone automatically
Automatic time-zone selection depends on Windows location services. According to Microsoft’s Windows location service and privacy documentation, when location is enabled the service can combine GPS, nearby wireless access points and routers, cell towers, an IP address, or a default location to determine where the device is. That location is then used to pick the zone. If you switch automatic selection off, Windows stops using this location result for the zone, which is why manual selection is the usual fix for a device that reports the wrong city after travel or on a network that resolves to the wrong place.
Choosing between automatic and manual
| Setting | Where it lives | What it controls | Depends on location services |
|---|---|---|---|
| Set time zone automatically | Date & time | Whether Windows picks the zone for you | Yes, per Microsoft’s location service documentation |
| Time zone dropdown | Date & time | The zone you select when automatic selection is Off | No |
| Adjust for daylight saving time automatically | Date & time | Seasonal clock changes when the zone is set manually | Not stated in Microsoft’s location documentation |
| Set time automatically | Date & time | Whether the clock value syncs on its own | Not stated in Microsoft’s location documentation |
Use automatic selection when the device moves between zones and you want the clock to follow it. Use manual selection when the device should stay on one zone regardless of where it reports it is, such as a desktop that is shared across offices or a laptop used mainly in one place.

Source and version notes
The procedure above comes from Microsoft’s guide Set time, date, and time zone settings in Windows, which applies to both Windows 11 and Windows 10. Menu labels can shift between feature updates, so if a label on your screen differs, search the Settings app for “time zone” and use the Date & time result.
