Set up YouTube Live Chat moderation in YouTube Studio before you go live: choose who can participate, add trusted moderators, configure blocked words and held messages, then use message-level actions to deal with problems during the stream. These are separate controls: some reduce or queue unwanted chat in advance, while moderators handle specific messages and viewers.
Prepare live chat moderation before the stream
On a computer, open YouTube Studio’s channel moderation settings and review the live-chat controls. Studio navigation and labels can change, so use YouTube’s current help guidance if a setting has moved.

- Add trusted moderators. Choose standard moderators for routine message review and enforcement. Assign the managing moderator role only when someone needs its additional live-chat controls.
- Set up filters. Add terms relevant to your stream to the blocked-words list and decide whether potentially inappropriate messages should be held for review. These controls can reduce what reaches public chat, but they do not catch everything.
- Choose who may participate. Use unrestricted chat, subscribers-only chat, or members-only chat as appropriate for the event. Subscribers-only mode can require a minimum subscription duration.
- Agree on a response plan. Decide who is watching chat and when to remove a message, time someone out, or hide a repeat offender. This is a practical team guideline, not a YouTube-mandated policy.
Some moderation controls can also be adjusted during a stream in Live Control Room. Check the current interface before the event rather than relying on a saved set of menu labels.
Choose the right participation settings

Available options can depend on the stream setup and the interface YouTube presents. Review the event’s chat settings before announcing access rules to viewers. YouTube’s live-chat moderation guidance covers the controls and their configuration.

Add moderators and understand their permissions
Give moderation access only to people you trust. YouTube distinguishes standard moderators from managing moderators. A standard moderator can remove messages, put a user in timeout, hide a user, and review messages held for review. Managing moderators have additional live-chat controls, including participant mode, message delay, blocked words, and management of standard moderators or approved users, as described in YouTube’s Android moderation-tools help.
Managing moderators do not have access to YouTube Studio or Live Control Room. Assign the role based on the live-chat controls the person needs, not as a substitute for Studio access.

Handle messages and viewers during the stream
Review held messages
YouTube may hold potentially inappropriate messages instead of showing them publicly. A moderator can show a held message if it is suitable for the stream or hide it if it is not. If nobody acts, the message remains hidden. Use context when deciding: a filter cannot reliably judge every meaning or situation. YouTube cautions, “No system is perfect, but this feature can make it easier for you to moderate live chat messages on your live stream.”

Remove a message, time out a user, or hide them
Use the message’s action menu to select the response that fits the behavior. Removing a message addresses that contribution. A timeout temporarily prevents the person from sending chat messages for the selected period. Hiding a user makes their chat messages and comments invisible to other viewers; YouTube does not tell that user they have been hidden. These actions have different effects, so reserve the broader, less visible hide action for cases where it is warranted.

Know what viewers can see
YouTube Live Chat is available on YouTube watch pages, not in embedded players. If viewers are watching an embedded stream, they will not have the Live Chat feature there.
YouTube also describes AI-generated summaries of public live-chat conversation as experimental. They may be inaccurate, offensive, or inappropriate, and they summarize chat—not the video content. Do not treat a summary as a substitute for reviewing messages yourself.
