You do not have to turn off your child’s phone camera in every situation. If they do not need camera access, you can restrict it; if they do, limit which apps can use it and agree on when it is appropriate. The right choice depends on your child’s age and needs, the phone, and your family’s rules. No setting by itself guarantees online safety.
Should you turn off your child’s phone camera?
Consider restricting camera access if your child has no current need for it, or if you want to prevent particular apps from using it. A blanket restriction may also interfere with legitimate uses, such as taking photos or using a school or communication app. Decide whether you want to block camera use across the device or only for selected apps, then choose the narrowest restriction that fits.

Official guidance recommends managing privacy settings and talking with children about online privacy; it does not establish that every child’s phone camera should always be off or that disabling it alone prevents harm. The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) also cautions that children may find ways around parental controls or turn them off, so settings work best alongside clear expectations and continued conversations.

On an iPhone or iPad
Apple’s current family guidance describes managing a child’s device through Settings > Family > [child’s name] > Content & Privacy Restrictions. Within the privacy restrictions, caregivers can manage app access to information and device features and choose whether to allow or disallow a category. The controls shown can vary by the child’s age, region, software version, and account setup, so follow Apple’s current instructions for the device and family configuration: Set up parental controls to manage your child’s iPhone or iPad.

On an Android phone
Android’s privacy settings include camera and microphone access controls and indicators, but the available features and their locations can vary by manufacturer, operating system version, and region. Open the phone’s Privacy settings and check the device maker’s current instructions rather than relying on a menu path that may not exist on your model. Android explains the available privacy controls and their variation in its privacy overview.
How do I stop apps from using my child’s camera?
Review camera access app by app. An app may request permission to use the camera, microphone, photos, contacts, or location; allowing one permission does not mean you must allow the others. Revoke camera access for apps that do not need it, and revisit the list when your child installs apps or an app’s purpose changes. The FTC recommends checking privacy and security settings for each app, in addition to considering device-level controls. Its guidance is at Kids and Cell Phones.

Check both the phone’s app-permission controls and any privacy settings inside individual apps. Labels and available controls differ by phone and app, so use the settings available on your child’s device. If you cannot identify why an app needs camera access, leave permission off until you have checked with the app provider or decided the app is not appropriate.

Make camera rules part of a broader safety plan
Explain which apps may use the camera, what your child is allowed to photograph or share, and what they should do if an app or person makes them uncomfortable. UNICEF recommends reviewing app permissions, using parental controls, and helping children develop the skills to navigate online responsibly. Its Online privacy checklist for parents says, “Keep webcams covered when not in use.” That advice specifically refers to webcams; a phone lens cover is an optional physical blocker, not a substitute for managing software permissions.

For online services likely to be used by children, the UK Children’s Code principles summarized by GOV.UK include high-privacy defaults, data minimisation, and age-appropriate information. A physical cover blocks the lens it covers while it is in place. It does not revoke an app’s camera permission, stop another camera from being used, or switch off camera software. Covers may also be impractical on some phones or interfere with the lens, case, or camera features, so check that one fits the specific device before using it.
