You need an AI Credit balance before the button works. The full key is shown only once when you create it, and deleting a key cuts off access immediately. This guide covers creating, storing, connecting, reviewing, and deleting those keys.
Confirm you need an AI Gateway key
Bluehost uses the word “key” for several different credentials. The keys described here are AI Gateway API keys, which give an application access to third-party AI models through an OpenAI-compatible connection. They are not the same as Bluehost SSH keys, and they are not the WHM Remote Access Key used for Web Host Manager. Check which service you are connecting to before you follow any key workflow.

| Credential | Where it is managed | What it is for |
|---|---|---|
| AI Gateway API key (this guide) | Hosting > Manage > AI Tooling > Manage API Keys | Authenticating an application or SDK to the Bluehost AI Gateway endpoint |
| WHM Remote Access Key | Hosting > WHM > Cluster > Remote Access Key | Scripts, billing platforms, and applications that communicate with Web Host Manager |
| SSH key | Not covered in this guide | Not covered in this guide |
If your application asks for a Gateway endpoint and a key for AI model requests, you need the AI Gateway key. If it asks for WHM access, follow Bluehost’s separate Remote Access Key documentation instead.

Check your AI Credit balance first
Bluehost requires an AI Credit balance before you can create or manage AI Gateway keys. In the Manage API Keys workflow, the button stays disabled until the account has purchased credits. If you see a disabled button, that is the most likely cause.
#1 Best Overall
AI Credits are prepaid, non-refundable, and expire. Bluehost’s credits guide says to check the AI Credit Balance page for your current balance and its specific expiration date. Expiry terms are not a single fixed period that applies to every customer, so use the date shown on your own account.
To add credits, go to Hosting > Manage > AI Tooling > Add AI Credits.
Create an AI Gateway API key
- Sign in to the Bluehost Portal.
- Select Hosting in the left navigation.
- Select Manage for the hosting package associated with the key.
- On the hosting details page, open AI Tooling, then select Manage API Keys.
- Confirm the account has AI Credits. If the button is disabled, add credits first.
- Note the Gateway endpoint shown on the dashboard:
https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com/. - Select + Create API Key.
- Enter a name that identifies the application or integration that will use the key, then select Create Key.
- On the save screen, copy the key and store it somewhere secure. Only then select Done.
Choose a name you will recognise later, such as the app or service name. Names are the main way you will tell keys apart in the table, so a clear name saves time when you need to revoke one.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

Store the key safely, because you cannot view it again
Bluehost states that the complete key appears only once, on the save screen. After you select Done, the API Keys table shows the key’s name, creation date, and last-used date, but not the secret itself. If you lose the key, you cannot recover it from the portal. Generate a replacement, update your application, and then delete the lost key.
Bluehost’s general API key guidance recommends the following practices:
- Do not share keys publicly.
- Do not hard-code keys into websites or application source code.
- Store keys in environment variables or a secure configuration file that is kept out of version control.
- Rotate keys periodically to reduce risk.
That general guidance also mentions restricting keys to approved IP addresses or services “when available.” It does not confirm that the AI Gateway supports those restrictions, so do not assume they are available for your keys.

Connect an application to the Gateway
The AI Gateway works as an OpenAI-compatible connection. To use it, configure your application’s SDK with two values:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →- Base URL:
https://gateway.ai.bluehost.com/, the Gateway endpoint from the dashboard. - API key: the key you created for that application, read from your environment or secure configuration rather than typed into code.
Bluehost points users to its model list for current model IDs, so check that list before you hard-code a model name. Some SDKs add a path segment to the base URL on their own. Compare your SDK’s documentation with the endpoint shown in the dashboard if requests fail.
Give each application its own key. Separate keys let you revoke one integration without disrupting the others.

Review the keys in your account
Return to Hosting > Manage > AI Tooling > Manage API Keys at any time to see your keys. The table lists the name, creation date, and last-used date for each one. A key with a last-used date that you do not recognise, or one that has never been used by the integration you built it for, is a good candidate for deletion.
Delete a key safely
- Open Hosting > Manage > AI Tooling > Manage API Keys.
- In the API Keys table, select the key you want to remove.
- Choose Delete API key.
- Confirm the deletion.
Bluehost’s deletion warning says: “Deletion is immediate and can’t be undone.” Before you delete a key, check the following:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Any application using the key loses LLM access as soon as it is deleted.
- Other keys on the account keep working, and the remaining AI Credit balance is not affected.
- You must update every application configuration that depended on the deleted key. Create a new key first if the integration still needs access, then update the configuration before you delete the old one.
Troubleshooting
- The Manage API Keys button is disabled. The account has no AI Credit balance. Add credits through Hosting > Manage > AI Tooling > Add AI Credits, then return to the page.
- You cannot find the key value. The full key is shown only on the save screen after creation. Generate a new key and delete the old one.
- An application stopped working after a deletion. The key it used was deleted. Create a new key for that application and update its stored key value.
- The key you need is not in the AI Tooling table. Confirm that you are looking for an AI Gateway key and not a WHM Remote Access Key, which is generated through Hosting > WHM > Cluster > Remote Access Key.
- Credits have expired or are running low. Check the AI Credit Balance page for your balance and expiration date. Credits are non-refundable, so top up before the balance runs out if the integration depends on it.
What the guidance does not cover
The Bluehost guide on managing these keys was last updated September 16, 2026. It describes the AI Gateway key workflow and the consequences of deletion. It does not publish usage limits, per-key quotas, or request-level pricing, so check your AI Credit balance and the AI Credit Balance page for the figures that apply to your account.
Best Value
For account access beyond the key itself, Bluehost’s guidance on user roles and developer access is a separate topic. Permissions for product and service management differ across Primary, Admin, and Tech roles, so review those before you grant someone else access to manage keys.
Ask your own team to check the Bluehost guide on credits and the WHM Remote Access Key article if you run mixed integrations, since each one uses a different credential.
