Start by checking which Xbox drive is short on space, then clear room by uninstalling games you no longer play or moving titles you want to keep to another drive. If you still need more capacity, an Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card is the documented option for installing and playing games directly from added storage. The right amount of space depends on the RPG itself; there is no reliable size estimate without knowing the title and its updates or optional content.
1. Check which Xbox drive needs space
Xbox says its consoles have either 512 GB or 1 TB of internal storage, depending on the model. The capacity shown for your particular console is the starting point; available space is what matters for an installation.

Open your console’s storage settings and check the available space on internal storage and any connected drives. Menu wording can change with system updates, so use the current Storage section shown on your console rather than relying on a path that may be out of date. If you plan to install to a particular drive, make sure that is the one with room.
The RPG’s required space is title-specific. Updates and optional content can also change what is needed, so check the game’s current listing or the install prompt instead of using a generic “large RPG” estimate.
#1 Best Overall
- EFFORTLESS XBOX INTEGRATION. Officially licensed for Xbox Series X|S consoles.
- ROOM FOR MORE GAMES. Up to 2TB(1) of storage gives you space to grow your library by up to 50(4) more games.
- NVME SPEED YOU CAN FEEL. Low-latency performance matches Xbox Velocity Architecture, so games play directly from the card.
- QUICK RESUME READY. Instantly switch between multiple suspended games without losing progress or waiting.
- XBOX GAME PASS ULTIMATE. Enjoy a 1-month trial with access to hundreds of games across console, PC, and cloud(2).
2. Free space by uninstalling games you have finished
If the internal drive is full, the simplest no-cost step is to uninstall games you are not actively playing. Xbox lists uninstalling inactive games among its ways to gain storage. Choose titles you would be comfortable downloading or installing again later; do not assume an uninstall will make them instantly available to play.
Remove only the games you intend to remove. If you are unsure about a title, consider moving it to another drive first, if you have one available.

3. Keep games in your library on another drive
Xbox Wire documents moving or copying games between local and external storage. This lets you retain installed titles without keeping all of them on the drive you need for the RPG. Moving a game can take time, and a title stored on an archive drive may need to be moved back or reinstalled before you can play, depending on the drive and game.

A standard external USB hard drive or SSD is useful for adding storage and managing a library, but do not assume it is equivalent to the Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card for playing every optimized game directly. Xbox’s first-party material confirms moving and copying between local and external storage, but does not establish every current USB direct-play rule or game-specific exception. Check the console’s prompt or the game’s Xbox support information before treating a USB drive as the active play location.

4. Set a useful default install location
If you often install games to a drive other than internal storage, look for the console’s current install-location setting. An Xbox Insider release note from 2022 gives this route: Settings > System > Storage Devices > Change Install Locations. Because that route comes from an older release note, the labels or location may differ on your current software version.
Choose a default that suits the games you play and the drive you want to use. A default location helps with future installs; it does not create free space, so check that the selected drive has enough room for the game.

Try cleanup and library moves before buying storage. If you routinely want more installed games ready to play, an expansion card is the clearest documented way to add capacity while playing directly from that additional storage.
| Option | Best for | Direct-play considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall inactive games | Freeing space without buying hardware | Removes the installed game; download or install it again when you want to play. |
| External USB HDD or SSD | Keeping more of a library externally and moving or copying games | Do not assume every optimized title can be played directly from a generic USB drive; check the console prompt or game-specific support information. |
| Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card | Adding capacity for games you want to install and play from the card | Xbox Wire says games can be installed to and played directly from the card. |
Expansion card capacity and compatibility
Xbox’s product page lists Seagate Storage Expansion Card variants of 1 TB and 2 TB for Xbox Series X and Xbox Series S. Xbox describes the card as maintaining internal-SSD peak speed and performance. These are listed capacities, not a claim about how many games will fit; that depends on each game’s size and installed content.

Xbox Wire’s storage primer says players can install games to the card, play directly from it, and move or copy games between local and external storage. Its Q&A respondent Jason Ronald described these as options alongside using an external hard drive. The card’s role is therefore different from a generic USB drive used mainly to expand storage or hold titles for later transfer.
Compare the practical trade-offs
- Cost: Cleanup costs nothing. Hardware prices vary by country and retailer, so compare current local listings before buying.
- Capacity: An expansion card page lists 1 TB and 2 TB variants. A USB drive’s capacity depends on the model you choose.
- Convenience: Uninstalling is straightforward but means reinstalling later. An external drive lets you keep titles installed for transfer or storage. An expansion card is intended for games you want to launch directly from added storage.
- Playing directly from the drive: Direct play from the expansion card is documented by Xbox Wire. Do not generalize that assurance to every standard USB drive and optimized game.
6. A practical order of operations
- Check available space on internal storage and any connected drive.
- Check the specific RPG’s current install requirement, including any updates or optional content relevant to your install.
- Uninstall games you are not actively playing if you need to free space immediately.
- Move or copy games you want to keep to another drive, allowing time for the transfer.
- Set a suitable default install location using the current Storage settings on your console.
- If you still need more room for games you want to play directly, compare a compatible Xbox Series X|S Storage Expansion Card with the needs of your library.
