You edit the checkout, refresh the site, and avoid copying files after every change.
Antihost offers managed WordPress hosting with free migration, one-click staging and a 14-day free trial.
The reliable workflow is to create the link in the site’s actual plugins or themes directory, activate the component normally, and write code with WordPress path APIs rather than hard-coded wp-content assumptions. Managed platforms may provide links that you cannot edit, while a self-managed server gives you control over both the link and its target.

A symbolic link is a filesystem entry that points to a directory elsewhere. The link has a name and location that WordPress can discover, but it does not contain a second copy of the plugin or theme. The files remain in the target directory.
For example, your working copy might live at ~/projects/acme-plugin, while a link named acme-plugin appears in the site’s plugin directory. WordPress scans the link as if the plugin were installed there, reads its headers, and lets you activate it from the dashboard or with the command-line tools you normally use. Changes made in the checkout are immediately visible to the site, subject to PHP opcode caching and any build step your project requires.

Decide whether a symlink fits your workflow
| Consideration | Symlinked checkout | Copied files |
|---|---|---|
| Iteration speed | Edit the source checkout and test without a copy step. | Every change requires a copy, synchronization task, or deployment. |
| Source-control separation | Git or another VCS can keep the project outside the web root. | The working tree is commonly inside the WordPress installation unless a separate sync process is used. |
| Path portability | Exposes bugs in code that assumes a particular directory or mishandles real paths. | Often hides those bugs until the code runs in another layout. |
| Permissions exposure | The web process can read, and possibly execute, files outside the visible WordPress tree. | Only the copied tree is exposed to the web process. |
| Deployment portability | Requires a host that permits links and a deliberate strategy for recreating or resolving them. | Works on more hosts because ordinary files are copied. |
| Update ownership | You control the linked checkout on a self-managed system; a managed platform may control the target. | The copy is updated by whichever process owns that installation. |
Use a symlink when fast local iteration and a clean source checkout matter more than the extra deployment and permission decisions. For production, deploy resolved files or recreate links intentionally rather than assuming a link will survive a migration.

Prepare the site and source checkout
Find the real content directory
Do not assume that the site uses wp-content at the standard location. WordPress permits administrators to relocate or rename the content directory. The Plugin Handbook specifically recommends plugins_url(), plugin_dir_url(), plugin_dir_path(), and plugin_basename() instead of hard-coded references.
On a server you administer, identify the directory containing the active plugins and themes folders using your deployment configuration, hosting file manager, or shell. In the examples below, the variable CONTENT_DIR stands for that discovered directory; replace it with your actual path.
Check the checkout before linking
- Put the plugin or theme in its own source-controlled directory.
- Confirm that the plugin’s main PHP file or the theme’s required files are at the level WordPress expects, not one directory deeper because of an archive extraction.
- Install project dependencies and run any build command before testing the site.
- Choose a source location the PHP and web-server accounts can read. A private home directory may be inaccessible to a service account even when your shell user can open it.
- Back up the WordPress installation and the source checkout before changing the live directory.
Remove or preserve an existing installation
The destination name must not already be an ordinary directory. If a production copy exists, move it outside the plugins or themes directory as a backup rather than deleting it immediately. Never recursively delete a link as though it were the target; an unsafe command can remove the source tree.
Create a plugin or theme link on Linux and macOS
The following is an illustrative layout, not a claim that every WordPress installation uses these paths. Set the variables to your own checkout and the content directory you discovered.
- Open a shell on the development machine or server and define the paths:
WP_ROOT="/srv/example-site aCONTENT_DIR="$WP_ROOT/wp-content" PLUGIN_SRC="$HOME/projects/acme-plugin" PLUGIN_LINK="$CONTENT_DIR/plugins/acme-plugin"Replace the sample values. If your content directory has a different name or location, set

- Confirm that the source exists and that the destination is not an ordinary directory:
test -d "$PLUGIN_SRC" && echo "source found" test ! -e "$PLUGIN_LINK" && echo "destination is free" - Create the directory link:
ln -s "$PLUGIN_SRC" "$PLUGIN_LINK"The first argument is the target; the second is the link that WordPress will scan. Use an absolute target while troubleshooting so the relationship is unambiguous.
- Inspect the result:
ls -ld "$PLUGIN_LINK" readlink "$PLUGIN_LINK"ls -lorls -ldshould show the arrow to the target, andreadlinkshould print the source path. If either command reports a missing target, correct the path before opening WordPress. - Check ownership and permissions. The PHP/web-server account needs the read access required by the plugin, and your development account needs the write access required for editing and building. Avoid making the entire source tree world-writable.
- Open the WordPress Plugins screen and activate the plugin normally. For a theme, use Appearance and the site’s theme activation controls. A link does not change the activation procedure.
To remove only the link later, use rm "$PLUGIN_LINK" after verifying that the path is a link. Do not use a recursive removal command on an uncertain path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCreate a directory junction on Windows
Windows supports directory junctions, which are commonly used to connect a development checkout to a local WordPress installation. The command must be run with paths appropriate to your machine, and the destination directory must not already exist.
- Open Command Prompt or PowerShell and close any process that may be holding the old directory.
- Create a junction from the site’s plugin or theme slot to the checkout. In Command Prompt:
mklink /J "C:pathtositewp-contentpluginsacme-plugin" "C:Usersyouprojectsacme-plugin"In PowerShell, the equivalent is:
New-Item -ItemType Junction -Path "C:pathtositewp-contentpluginsacme-plugin" -Target "C:Usersyouprojectsacme-plugin" - Verify the link in File Explorer or with
dir. The destination should be identified as a junction and should open the checkout. - Ensure that the account running PHP can read the target. Local stacks often run under your user account, but service-based stacks may use a separate account.
- Activate the plugin or theme through WordPress as usual, then test both PHP execution and browser-loaded assets.
To remove a junction without deleting its target, remove the junction entry with the appropriate directory-removal command after confirming its type. Treat the target path as valuable source code and verify every path before pressing Enter.
Write plugin code that survives symlinked paths
Use WordPress path and URL APIs
WordPress can relocate or rename its content directory, and a symlink introduces another distinction between the path users see and the path the operating system resolves. Build filesystem paths with plugin_dir_path( __FILE__ ) or the appropriate plugin API. Build public URLs with plugins_url() or plugin_dir_url( __FILE__ ). Use plugin_basename() when registering activation hooks, comparing plugin directories, or storing plugin-specific references.
The Plugin Handbook warns against hard-coding the wp-content directory or relying on WordPress internal constants for plugin paths. The same rule applies to themes: use the theme APIs and WordPress-provided template functions rather than concatenating a guessed directory name.

Understand the __FILE__ trap
PHP’s __FILE__ magic constant resolves symlinks automatically. Code that assumes the constant will preserve the visible link path can therefore construct an unexpected real path. This commonly affects includes, autoloaders, generated configuration files, and comparisons against the plugin directory returned by another function.
Keep path calculations in one small helper, log the resulting paths during development, and test with the linked directory actually in place. Do not “fix” a mismatch by hard-coding the link location; that makes the code less portable.
Test URLs and filesystem access separately
A file can be readable from PHP while its browser URL is wrong, or its URL can be correct while the web server cannot read the target. Test both:
- Load the plugin’s main file and any required classes.
- Visit an administrative screen that enqueues the plugin’s JavaScript or CSS.
- Inspect the browser network panel for 404 responses and permission errors.
- Open a generated asset URL and confirm that it maps to the intended linked component.
- Exercise template includes, uploads, autoloaders, and any build-generated directory.
WordPress still generates the public URL associated with the installed plugin or theme location; the symlink does not create a new public URL for the source checkout.
Theme-specific considerations
A linked theme is discovered from the themes directory and activated through the normal Appearance interface. Test parent-theme and child-theme relationships carefully: the child theme’s template references must identify the theme directory names WordPress registered, not an absolute source path.
Check image, font, stylesheet, and JavaScript URLs from both the front end and the customizer or site editor. A theme can render PHP correctly while an asset path still contains a hard-coded content-directory assumption. If a build tool writes files into the source checkout, confirm that the web server can read the generated output and that the build does not replace the junction itself.
Managed platforms and local runtimes behave differently
WordPress.com-managed symlinks
WordPress.com documents symlinked files and folders as centrally managed: the link points to platform-managed files rather than containing a second copy in the site’s SFTP-visible tree. Its documentation states that symlinked theme files cannot be edited directly and that managed themes are kept up to date by the platform.

If you replace a managed component with an unmanaged copy, update responsibility moves to you. That is a change in ownership, not merely a way to unlock an editor. Check the platform’s current rules before changing a managed link, and keep an export or backup of any custom work.
WordPress Studio local sites
WordPress Studio documents support for symlinked files and directories inside a site when Site directory file access is enabled. The setting is specific to that local runtime. Studio also states that adding a new symlink while the site is running causes the site to restart, so expect a brief interruption after creating one.
Do not generalize Studio’s behavior to another local stack, host, container, or virtual machine. Each runtime decides whether links are allowed, which account follows them, and whether file changes trigger a restart.
Managed versus self-managed operation
| Operational question | Managed platform | Self-managed server or local stack |
|---|---|---|
| Can you edit the target directly? | Not necessarily; platform-managed targets may be read-only. | Usually yes, provided your account and the service account have suitable permissions. |
| Who applies updates? | The platform may update managed themes or plugins centrally. | You choose when and how the source checkout is updated. |
| Are links supported? | Only where the platform documents them; restrictions may apply. | You control filesystem policy, but the web server, PHP runtime, container, and deployment system must all support the link. |
| Who owns failures? | The provider’s policy determines what can be changed and what support covers. | You must diagnose paths, permissions, restarts, backups, and deployment behavior. |
Security boundaries you must review
A symlink can make the web process execute PHP located outside the visible WordPress tree. Review the target as carefully as you would review files inside the document root.
- Link only to a trusted checkout. A link target can be changed or replaced by anyone who has write access to the parent directory or source tree.
- Keep source ownership controlled and grant the PHP/web-server account only the read or write access the application needs.
- Do not expose private keys, deployment files, local configuration, or unrelated projects beneath a traversable target.
- Check whether your web server follows links and whether its directory restrictions still apply to the resolved path.
- Use
define( 'DISALLOW_FILE_EDIT', true );in the appropriate configuration when you want to remove dashboard editing of plugin and theme PHP files. This reduces one route for code changes but does not replace filesystem permissions. - Back up both sides: the WordPress installation and the linked source tree. Restoring only the installation can leave a dangling link; restoring only the source can leave the site without its database, configuration, or media.
Deployment: do not assume the link will travel
Production hosts, archive tools, deployment services, and backup restorations differ in how they preserve symlinks. Some copy the link itself, some dereference it into ordinary files, and some reject it. Decide explicitly whether production should contain resolved plugin/theme files or a deliberately recreated link.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Build and test the source checkout.
- Record the intended destination and target ownership.
- For a file-based deployment, deploy the resolved files into the normal plugin or theme directory.
- For a link-based deployment, create the link on the destination host, verify that the target exists, and apply service-account permissions.
- Run a smoke test that loads PHP, enqueues assets, and checks the public site before activating traffic.
- Document how rollback removes or restores the link without deleting the source checkout.
Never treat a local symlink as proof that a hosting provider permits the same arrangement. Confirm the provider’s filesystem policy and test a restoration procedure before relying on links for a production release.
Troubleshoot common failures
The plugin or theme does not appear in WordPress
- Verify that the link is inside the active plugins or themes directory, not merely somewhere under the site root.
- Run
ls -ldandreadlink, or inspect the junction on Windows, to confirm that the target exists. - Check that the plugin header is in the expected PHP file and that a theme contains the required metadata.
- Confirm that the PHP/web-server account can traverse every parent directory in the target path.
PHP reports a missing include
Inspect code that concatenates a guessed content directory or compares __FILE__ to a link path. Replace those assumptions with plugin_dir_path(), plugin_basename(), theme APIs, or another WordPress-supported path function. Log the resolved path once, then correct the helper rather than adding a one-off exception.
Best Value
CSS or JavaScript returns 404
Separate URL generation from filesystem access. Confirm the generated URL, confirm that the asset exists in the linked checkout, and verify web-server permissions. A working PHP include does not prove that a browser can retrieve a static file.
The site shows “permission denied”
Check permissions on the target and every parent directory, then identify the account running PHP. Grant the minimum traversal and read access required. Avoid solving the problem with a world-writable source tree.
Recommended Free Tools
A build or update removes the link
Some update or deployment processes replace the destination with a real directory. Keep the checkout as the authoritative source, recreate the link deliberately, and verify it after each update. On a managed platform, follow the provider’s update policy instead of attempting to overwrite a centrally managed target.
The local site restarts after linking
WordPress Studio documents a restart when a new in-site symlink is added with Site directory file access enabled. Wait for the runtime to come back, then test the site. Another local stack may behave differently.
The link works locally but fails after migration
Inspect the restored destination with the platform’s file tools. The link may point to an absolute path that does not exist on the new host, or the host may not follow links. Deploy resolved files or recreate a link whose target exists on that machine.
Do not confuse a separate WordPress core directory with a symlinked component
WordPress can be installed with core files in a separate directory, but that arrangement does not move themes and plugins out of the content directory. Official server documentation still places themes and plugins under wp-content unless the content directory itself has been relocated. Separating core is an installation-layout choice; symlinking a particular plugin or theme is a filesystem-linking choice. They can be used together, but one does not create the other.

Pre-activation checklist
- Have you identified the actual active plugins or themes directory?
- Is the source checkout outside the web root where practical, and is it trusted?
- Does the destination contain a link rather than a copied directory?
- Can the PHP/web-server account read the target and traverse its parent directories?
- Does the code use WordPress path and URL APIs instead of hard-coded content paths?
- Have you tested includes, autoloading, template resolution, and browser assets with the link active?
- Have you checked whether your local runtime or host restarts, blocks, or centrally manages symlinks?
- Is your deployment plan explicit about recreating links versus deploying resolved files?
- Do backups include both the WordPress installation and the source checkout?
