Manage website assets by storing them in cloud object storage, limiting write and read permissions, preserving versions you may need to restore, and serving public files through a correctly configured CDN or load balancer. The storage bucket is the origin; the delivery layer routes requests to it and applies caching. Keep the origin private where supported, set each file’s content type and cache policy deliberately, and test the actual asset paths visitors will request.
Separate storage from delivery
Put site files—such as images, stylesheets, fonts, and scripts—in an object-storage origin. A CDN or load balancer handles visitor requests and fetches the files from that origin. Configuring delivery for one path or extension does not guarantee that other assets will be served: AWS notes that a CloudFront behavior for *.html does not also cover uploaded .jpg files unless an applicable behavior routes those paths.

Map the paths your site uses to the intended origin and delivery behavior. Set Content-Type when uploading objects; CloudFront does not infer the MIME type for objects at the origin. A wrong content type can cause a browser to interpret a file incorrectly. See AWS’s CloudFront guidance on adding, removing, and replacing distributed content.
Organize assets and permissions before publishing
Keep public and private files distinct
Inventory which files are intended for public delivery and which are private or deployment-only artifacts. Use stable, predictable object paths that can be covered by your delivery rules. Do not place sensitive files in an origin configured to serve public content.

It also automatically finds and deletes similar or duplicate photo, backs up live photos and allows you to share them with your friends or family with just one tap. Everything stays effortlessly organized, powered by intelligent tagging and recognition.
Grant only the access each identity needs
Give the deployment identity permission to write the objects it publishes; give the delivery layer permission to read the published objects. Avoid treating public access to the storage bucket as a shortcut. AWS recommends retaining S3 Block Public Access and documents CloudFront origin access control as a way to deliver public static content while keeping the bucket private. Google Cloud documents IAM-based access control and private Cloud Storage buckets served through Cloud Load Balancing and Cloud CDN. Review AWS S3 access-control guidance and Google Cloud Storage access-control guidance.
Set metadata and cache behavior intentionally
Choose cache metadata according to how often an asset changes and how quickly a correction must reach visitors. Google Cloud documents these Cache-Control behaviors for its built-in Cloud Storage cache:

Google Cloud’s built-in caching depends on public accessibility and cache metadata. For files that change often, choose a shorter freshness interval or plan a versioning or invalidation workflow. Cache behavior is part of publishing: a correct file at the origin can still appear stale to visitors while a valid cached copy is being reused. See Google Cloud’s caching documentation.

Enable object versioning when restoring an earlier file would be valuable. AWS describes using S3 Versioning to preserve and restore previous object versions. Google Cloud explains that when an object is replaced or deleted with Object Versioning enabled, the earlier live version becomes noncurrent; each noncurrent version is billed at the same rate as a live version. Set lifecycle rules to match your recovery window and storage budget rather than retaining versions indefinitely by default. Configure delivery and verify the paths
- Choose the origin and delivery service. Decide which bucket holds the files and which CDN or load balancer serves them. Keep the origin private where the platform supports private-origin delivery.
- Map every asset path. Confirm that delivery behaviors include the paths used for images, stylesheets, scripts, and fonts—not just HTML pages.
- Upload metadata. Set the correct MIME type through
Content-Typeand add the cache policy appropriate to the file’s update cycle. - Verify representative requests. Check an HTML file, an image, a stylesheet, a font, and a path that should not exist. Confirm status, content type, permissions, and cache headers.
- Document the update method. Decide whether you will publish versioned filenames or use the CDN’s documented invalidation or replacement mechanisms when content changes.
AWS lists file versioning and invalidation as ways to update or remove distributed CloudFront files. Google Cloud’s cache documentation explains how freshness metadata affects reuse. These controls solve different problems: versioned names provide a new URL for changed content, while invalidation or replacement workflows address existing distributed paths.

Choose based on your access model, private-origin support, path and cache configuration, rollback and lifecycle controls, team experience, regional needs, and expected storage, request, and data-transfer costs. The documented material here does not establish comparable price or performance benchmarks, so it cannot support a claim that one provider is universally faster or cheaper. Troubleshoot common asset problems
- An image or stylesheet returns 403: Check the delivery identity’s read permissions, origin access configuration, and whether the request path is routed to the intended origin. Do not solve this by making the entire bucket public without reviewing the access model.
- An asset returns 404 while HTML loads: Confirm that the relevant CDN behavior includes the asset path or extension. A rule covering HTML alone may not cover images or other file types.
- The browser handles a file incorrectly: Inspect the response’s
Content-Typeand correct the object metadata at upload. - Visitors see an older version: Check the asset’s cache headers and freshness interval, then follow the chosen versioned-filename or invalidation workflow.
- Storage use grows after enabling versioning: Review retained noncurrent versions and lifecycle rules. Versioning preserves recovery copies, which continue to occupy billable storage.
