How to Manage Test Cases with BrowserStack Test Management

A practical guide to structuring, writing, importing, and maintaining test cases in BrowserStack Test Management, with guidance on templates and API workflows.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Build a test case repository in BrowserStack Test Management by organizing cases inside a project, choosing a template that fits each scenario, documenting steps and expected results clearly, and maintaining the repository as the product changes. BrowserStack also documents imports from TestRail, Zephyr Scale, and CSV, plus API-based case creation for teams that need to automate administration.

Start with a project and a useful folder structure

BrowserStack describes a project as the top-level container for related test cases, test runs, test plans, reports, and project insights. Create one for an application or a clearly bounded feature, and give it a name and description that tell the team what belongs there. See BrowserStack’s project documentation for current interface details.

Within the project, create folders and subfolders around meaningful product or testing boundaries—for example, application areas or major workflows. Use folders primarily for navigation. Tags and fields such as type, owner, priority, state, and automation status let people filter and triage cases without creating an unnecessarily deep folder tree. BrowserStack documents project and folder organization in its test case creation guide.

Choose a case template that matches the scenario

Template Best fit How it structures the case
Text A straightforward scenario that does not need a formal step-by-step layout Describes the case in less structured text
Steps A procedure where individual actions and their outcomes need to be explicit Records actions and expected outcomes step by step
Gherkin (BDD) A behavior scenario written in Given-When-Then form Expresses behavior using Gherkin; BrowserStack’s guide says one case supports one scenario

These are different authoring conventions, not a ranking. Select the format that makes the case easiest for another person to execute and review. If a Gherkin case needs to describe multiple distinct scenarios, create separate cases rather than combining them. BrowserStack’s create-a-test-case documentation describes the available templates.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Write cases other people can execute

A case should communicate what is being tested and what result counts as success. Start with a specific title, then record the scenario, relevant preconditions, execution details, and expected result. Keep the level of detail consistent with the chosen template: a Steps case should make the expected outcome clear at the appropriate step level, while a Gherkin case should express one scenario.

Use the available metadata to make cases easier to assign and find. BrowserStack’s guide documents fields for owner, priority, type, automation status, tags, linked requirements, estimate, and state. Apply fields consistently across the project; metadata only helps filtering when the team uses it in a predictable way.

  • Title: name the behavior or outcome being checked, not just the screen involved.
  • Preconditions: state required setup or account conditions when they affect execution.
  • Steps and expected outcomes: make actions observable and outcomes specific enough to judge pass or fail.
  • Metadata: choose relevant ownership, priority, type, automation, and requirement values so cases can be filtered and triaged.

Maintain the repository as the product changes

Case management is ongoing work, not just initial authoring. BrowserStack’s manage test cases documentation lists editing, deleting, copying, moving, exporting, filtering, shared steps, column preferences, archiving, and restoring.

Reuse carefully

Shared steps can reduce repeated maintenance where the same procedure appears in multiple cases. Reuse is useful when a common procedure changes, but keep case-specific expected outcomes in the right place so shared material does not obscure what each case validates.

Archive cases that should not remain active

When a case is obsolete but the team needs to retain it, archiving can remove it from active use without deleting it; BrowserStack documents restoring archived cases as well. Use deletion only when retention is not needed and the team is comfortable removing the case.

Keep navigation and views workable

Move or copy cases when ownership or product structure changes, and use filters and column preferences to focus on the information needed for review or triage. Exporting can support workflows outside the repository; confirm the current export behavior in BrowserStack’s documentation.

Import existing cases

BrowserStack’s create-case guide describes importing projects from TestRail or Zephyr Scale and importing CSV data into an existing project. Its product overview also describes quick imports, Jira integration, dashboards, report uploads, and unified manual or automated test runs. Review the current import instructions for required columns and field mapping before migrating: source formats, mappings, and account configuration can affect the work involved.

  1. Identify the source of the existing cases and decide whether the migration is a project import or CSV import into an existing project.
  2. Review BrowserStack’s current import instructions and prepare the data to match the required columns and mappings.
  3. Check imported cases for template structure, metadata, and expected outcomes before relying on them in active testing.

BrowserStack’s documentation uses labels including “Import test data using CSV” and “Manual test runs”; consult the live creation and import guide for the current route and requirements.

Use the API for repetitive case administration

For scripted workflows, BrowserStack’s API reference documents endpoints for listing and creating cases, including bulk creation. The case-creation endpoint requires project and folder identifiers. The reference states that a bulk request accepts 1 to 10,000 cases and that requests over 30 are asynchronous. These are documented API limits and behavior; verify the live reference before building a process that depends on them, since API behavior may change.

Where ScreenshotNeo fits—and where it does not

ScreenshotNeo is a website screenshot API and MCP server for developers, not a test case repository or a BrowserStack Test Management integration. It can be an alternative to try first when a workflow separately needs website screenshots: it removes cookie banners, newsletter popups, and chat widgets before capture, and bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are not billed. Its MCP server gives AI agents tools to take screenshots, inspect page information, and capture PDFs. Learn more at ScreenshotNeo.

Or skip the browser setup

A single GET request can return a screenshot; this example saves a capture of Stripe as WebP. See the ScreenshotNeo API documentation for request options.

curl -G "https://api.screenshotneo.com/v1/shot" -d access_key=YOUR_API_KEY --data-urlencode url=https://stripe.com -o shot.webp

ScreenshotNeo removes cookie banners, popups, and chat widgets before the shot; bot checks, blank pages, and failed loads are never billed; and its MCP server lets AI agents take screenshots. The Free plan includes 1,000 screenshots a month with no card, and paid plans start at $5 for 3,000. Sign up for ScreenshotNeo’s free plan.

Plan around the team’s actual workflow

Choose the repository setup by asking what the cases need to communicate and how people will maintain them: how much structure a case needs, whether expected results belong at case or step level, whether the team writes BDD scenarios, which metadata must be filterable, how cases should be grouped and reused, and whether imports, issue-tracker integrations, or API automation are necessary. BrowserStack documents these capabilities, but does not establish one setup as best for every team.
