That was the amount DOJ said the fund would receive from the federal Judgment Fund—not proof that the money was ultimately paid out. In June, DOJ told courts the fund would not go forward; the later appellate status is not established by the cited court and news reports.
What was the Anti-Weaponization Fund?
It was a fund DOJ announced as a way for people who said they had been targeted through “weaponization” or “lawfare” to submit claims and seek redress. Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche described the administration’s rationale this way: “As part of this settlement, we are setting up a lawful process for victims of lawfare and weaponization to be heard and seek redress.” That statement describes the administration’s plan; it is not a judicial finding that applicants were wronged or that the fund was lawful. DOJ’s May 18 announcement set out the proposal.

How much money was announced, and did Trump receive it?
DOJ announced that $1.776 billion would go to the fund from the federal Judgment Fund. The precise figure is $1.776 billion, rather than the $1.7 billion shorthand used in the headline. The announcement and settlement documents describe a proposed payment for the fund; the cited material does not establish that the money was ultimately disbursed, or that Trump personally received it. The settlement agreement describes the payment terms and the government’s asserted authority to use the Judgment Fund. Those terms are not, by themselves, an independent court ruling that the arrangement was lawful.
What did the fund have to do with Trump’s IRS lawsuit?
The lawsuit followed the disclosure of Trump tax-return information by a government contractor. DOJ said Donald Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Eric Trump, and the Trump Organization agreed to dismiss their pending case against the Treasury Department and IRS with prejudice and withdraw two administrative claims as part of the settlement arrangement. A dismissal with prejudice generally prevents the same claims from being brought again, but DOJ’s announcement of the agreement does not establish that every settlement provision was carried out. DOJ’s release describes the suit and the named plaintiffs.

What did the settlement documents say about leftover money?
The agreement provided that any balance remaining after December 15, 2028, would be transferred before January 1, 2029, to a government account designated by the President. It also said recipients would be responsible for their own tax compliance. These are terms in the written agreement, not evidence that the fund proceeded or that any balance will exist. The settlement agreement sets out those provisions.
Why was the fund challenged?
A complaint filed on May 20, 2026, challenged DOJ’s and Treasury’s certification of the payment and their authority to settle the Trump v. IRS case. The complaint’s claims are allegations, not findings by a court. The complaint states the challengers’ arguments.

Is the Anti-Weaponization Fund still happening?
The status changed after DOJ’s announcement. In June 2026, DOJ told courts the fund would not go forward and asked judges to reject challenges as moot, according to CBS News. On June 10, the Associated Press reported that a judge rejected a watchdog’s request for a temporary order blocking the fund after accepting, for the time being, the Acting Attorney General’s representation that the plan was being scrapped. That report describes the then-reported court action.
Those June reports establish what DOJ represented and the procedural result at that point. They do not establish the precise outcome of later appeals, that a final judgment canceled the fund, or that the other settlement provisions were undone. The cited material therefore does not support calling the fund active or saying that its final legal status is settled.
