Put the required sources in each scene, then use Studio Mode to preview the next scene and check its layout before transitioning it live. Keep scene setups in Scene Collections and stream/output settings in Profiles.
Plan scenes around the parts of your show
A scene is a composed program state; its sources are the visual and audio elements that make up that state. Organize scenes around what viewers should see at each point, rather than creating a new scene for every small layout adjustment.

- Starting Soon: a title card, countdown, or background audio.
- Host: a webcam or capture-card image, microphone audio, and any name or show labels.
- Screen Share or Gameplay: the display, window, or game capture, with the microphone and any overlays you need.
- Break: a holding graphic or media clip, with appropriate audio.
- Ending: a closing graphic or camera view.
These are examples, not required OBS presets. Name scenes plainly so you can identify them quickly while presenting; OBS lets you name and reorder scenes. See the OBS Studio Overview Guide.
Add and arrange the sources each scene needs
Select a scene, then add sources in OBS’s Sources dock. Available choices include video capture devices, display or window capture, game capture, images, media, text, browser content, and audio inputs. The right source depends on your production and operating system; for example, OBS documents different capture options for Windows and macOS.

- 15 Customizable LCD Keys: instantly control your apps, tools and platforms.
- One-Touch Operation: trigger single or multiple actions, launch social posts, adjust audio, mute mic, turn on lights, and much more.
- Visual Feedback: know that your command has been executed.
- Powerful Plugins: Elgato 4KCU, OBS, Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, Discord, Spotify, Philips Hue, and many more.
- Hotkey Actions: streamline your film editing, music production, photography workflow, etc.
- Add a source: select the scene, use the + button in Sources, choose the relevant source type, and follow its properties dialog.
- Arrange the composition: select a source in the preview to position or size it. Put elements where they belong in the canvas and make sure they do not obscure essential content.
- Set source order: reorder sources in the Sources list when one should appear in front of another. A title or webcam frame may need to sit above a background or screen capture.
- Show or hide elements: use a source’s visibility control when an element should be present in the scene setup but not currently visible.
- Check audio sources: confirm the intended microphone or other audio input is included and that its meter responds when sound is made.
Use the OBS Studio Overview Guide and Sources Guide for source management and controls. You do not need a particular camera, microphone, or capture card just to manage scenes; YouTube says expensive equipment is not required to get started in its live streaming tips.
Preview and switch safely with Studio Mode
Studio Mode separates the scene currently going out to viewers from the scene you can prepare and edit. This reduces the risk of exposing an unfinished layout while you are arranging the next part of the show.

- Turn on Studio Mode in OBS.
- Select the scene you want to prepare in the preview pane, not the live program pane.
- Check that its sources are visible, correctly sized and positioned, and that the intended audio is active.
- Use Transition to send the preview live when it is ready.
OBS includes Cut for an immediate switch and Fade for a gradual transition; you can adjust transition duration and configure quick transitions or hotkeys. Choose a transition deliberately, and avoid making layout changes in the live scene when you mean to edit the preview. The OBS Studio Overview Guide describes Studio Mode and transitions.
Keep scene setups separate from stream settings
OBS has two organizational tools that solve different problems. A Scene Collection holds a group of scenes and their arrangements, such as the layouts for a recurring show. A Profile stores most stream and output settings, including service/account connection, video, and output configuration. Profiles do not store scenes.

| OBS item | What it organizes | Use it for |
|---|---|---|
| Scene Collection | Scenes and their source arrangements | Keeping separate show or production layouts together |
| Profile | Stream and output configuration | Keeping separate service or output settings, such as a different resolution |
When backing up or exporting a setup, preserve the correct configuration type: a Profile will not preserve your scenes. See OBS’s Quickstart Guide and Profiles guide.
Check YouTube eligibility and run a preflight
Before planning a first broadcast, confirm the channel can livestream. YouTube says channels must be verified and have no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days; its getting-started guidance states streamers must be at least 16. Enabling livestreaming for the first time can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s current live streaming eligibility instructions and getting-started guidance before the event.

- Multi Actions, Smart Profiles: trigger multiple actions at once or sequentially, automatically switch between interface configurations for different apps.

- Stream Deck App and Store: drag and drop setup, download plugins, icons, thousands of royalty-free tracks, SFX, and more. Regular updates and new plugins frequently added.
- In YouTube Studio, set up the livestream and its stream details in advance. For encoder-based streaming, use YouTube’s encoder setup guidance.
- Start OBS’s stream when you are ready to check the connection, then look for the stream preview in YouTube Live Control Room before going public.
- Speak into the intended microphone and watch the OBS audio meter. Confirm the correct scene and sources appear in the YouTube preview.
- Test the complete setup before the event, including scene transitions and any screen or game capture you plan to use.
- Plan for upload bandwidth: YouTube recommends about 20% more upload capacity than your total streaming bitrate. This is a bandwidth-planning recommendation, not a guaranteed minimum for every connection.
YouTube’s live streaming tips recommend testing before you go live, and its encoder guidance explains previewing the stream in Live Control Room.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsTroubleshoot common scene problems
- A source is missing from the scene: select the intended scene and check whether the source was added to that scene. Confirm its visibility is enabled.
- A source is covered by another element: inspect the Sources ordering and move the obscuring source behind the element that should appear in front.
- The wrong scene reaches viewers: in Studio Mode, confirm which pane is live and which is preview before selecting Transition.
- The microphone meter does not move: check that the intended audio input is included and selected, then verify the device is connected and producing audio.
- YouTube does not show a preview: confirm livestreaming eligibility and activation, check OBS’s stream connection, and allow for the first-time activation period if applicable.
- The stream is unstable despite a working scene layout: check upload capacity against total streaming bitrate and leave the headroom YouTube recommends. Scene organization does not compensate for an inadequate connection.
Or let it run in the cloud
For an uploaded video that should play as a continuous YouTube livestream, StreamNeo runs the loop in the cloud: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it plays the video as uploaded at any quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. It is for uploaded videos on YouTube, not a live camera feed. The first day is free with no card. Monthly is $9.99 per month. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
