How to Manage PS5 Storage Before Downloading Large PlayStation Plus Games

Check available PS5 space, free it safely, and understand when USB storage, an M.2 SSD, or PlayStation Plus cloud saves can help.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before downloading a large PlayStation Plus game, check Settings > Storage on your PS5 and compare the available space with the game’s current PlayStation Store listing. If you need room, delete games or apps you can redownload, remove eligible unused game content, or move games you are not playing. For PS5 games you want to launch directly from added storage, use a compatible internal M.2 SSD; a USB extended-storage drive can archive PS5 games, but you must copy them back before playing. PlayStation Plus cloud storage holds saved data, not game installations.

Check free space and the game’s download details first

On the console, open Settings > Storage. The PS5 shows storage used by games, media, and saved data, along with the space available. Check this before you start a download so you know whether you need to clear or add storage. This first check is free and helps you avoid choosing a storage solution before you know whether you have a one-time shortage or a recurring one.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Next, open the current PlayStation Store listing for the game you are entitled to download and check its displayed download details. The required space for a particular game is not established here, and a game’s install or update needs can vary. Do not assume a universal amount of free space will be enough: compare the listing with the console’s available space and follow any additional space prompt shown by the PS5. If you are close to the amount shown, make room rather than relying on a precise match; the console’s own prompts are the guide for that download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

PlayStation Plus catalog membership and availability can change, and no region, tier, or specific game is assumed here. Confirm that the game is currently available to you before making storage decisions around it. The Store entry is also the place to check the details for the particular game, rather than estimating from another title or an old download.

Choose the least disruptive way to make room

For a one-time shortage, deleting something you can download again is usually the simplest option. If you regularly run out of space, consider moving games you are not playing to USB extended storage or installing a compatible M.2 SSD. The right choice depends on whether you want to archive games or launch PS5 games directly from the added drive.

Think about what it will take to restore the space you clear. Deleting a game removes its local installation, so you need a network connection and time to download it again when you want to play. Moving a PS5 game to USB keeps its game data on hand, but it still has to be copied back to console or M.2 storage before play. An M.2 SSD is the option in this guide that lets you keep PS5 games on added storage and launch them directly, provided the drive is compatible.

Option Best use Can you play a PS5 game directly from it? Main trade-off
Delete games or apps Recover space quickly without buying hardware No; download the game again to play You need a connection and time to redownload it
Delete selected game content Remove eligible parts you no longer need Often, the remaining game content stays playable Available only for some games and content
USB extended storage Archive PS5 games or play PS4 games No; copy PS5 game data back to console or M.2 storage first Formatting erases the drive, and PS5 games need to be copied back to play
Internal M.2 SSD Add storage for PS5 games you want to launch directly Yes, if the drive meets Sony’s requirements You must buy and install a compatible drive with suitable heat dissipation
PlayStation Plus cloud storage Sync or transfer saved data Not applicable to game installations It does not free space used by installed games

There is no single best option for every player. If you are clearing one game you have finished and can download it again later, deletion may be enough. If you want to keep several PS5 games archived without downloading them again, USB extended storage may suit that purpose. If you want a larger library of PS5 games ready to launch from storage, check M.2 compatibility instead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Delete a game or app

  1. Open Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps.
  2. Select the game or app you want to remove, then choose Delete.
  3. When you want a deleted purchase again, download it from your game library. Deleting it removes the local installation; it does not remove the purchase from your library.

Choose something you are comfortable restoring later. If the connection is slow, you may prefer to move a game to USB extended storage rather than spend time downloading it again. Before confirming a deletion, make sure you have selected the intended item; the goal is to remove local content you can live without for now, not to delete a game you meant to keep installed.

Remove only eligible game content

Some games let you remove selected parts, such as add-ons or content associated with a completed portion of the game. In Settings > Storage > Console Storage > Games and Apps, select a game and look for Customize. If it appears, review the listed content and remove only what you no longer need. The option is game-dependent; its absence means you cannot use this selective-removal path for that title.

Selective deletion can be less disruptive than removing an entire game, but do not expect every title to offer it or assume all listed content is disposable. Read the choices shown for that game and retain anything you still use. If there is no suitable option, use the standard delete or move path instead.

Use USB extended storage to archive games

A USB extended-storage drive is useful when you want to keep PS5 game data without using the console’s built-in storage. Sony’s PlayStation Support guidance says PS5 games cannot be played directly from USB extended storage; copy the game data back to console storage or an M.2 SSD when you want to play. PS4 games can be played directly from USB extended storage.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That distinction matters when choosing hardware: USB extended storage is primarily an archive location for PS5 games, not an expansion drive from which those games launch. If you are likely to switch between archived PS5 games frequently, allow time for the copy back to console or M.2 storage. If the goal is direct play from added storage, compare the M.2 requirements below.

USB drive requirements

Sony’s USB guidance reviewed on October 13, 2026, specifies a SuperSpeed USB connection of 5 Gbps or later and a capacity from 250 GB to 8 TB. Sony cautions that not all drives are guaranteed to work, even if they meet the listed criteria. The drive must connect directly to the PS5 rather than through a USB hub. These are compatibility requirements, not a guarantee that every qualifying device will be accepted.

Format and use the drive carefully

  1. Back up anything important on the USB drive first. Formatting it as extended storage erases its existing contents.
  2. Connect a supported drive directly to the console, not through a USB hub, and follow the PS5’s on-screen instructions to format it as extended storage.
  3. Move games you are not currently playing to the drive using the console’s storage controls. Check the destination shown before confirming.
  4. To play an archived PS5 game, copy it back to console storage or M.2 storage. A PS4 game can be launched from USB extended storage.
  5. When you are finished, use the PS5 settings to safely stop using or disconnect the drive rather than unplugging it while data may be in use.

USB storage is an archive path, not a way to avoid moving PS5 game data back before play. If you want added storage from which PS5 games can be launched, compare the M.2 requirements below instead. Remember that formatting is destructive to the drive’s existing contents, so back up files you want to keep before setting it up for the console.

Add an internal M.2 SSD for directly playable PS5 games

A compatible M.2 SSD can store, download, and launch PS5 games. Compatibility depends on the drive’s interface, size, and cooling structure, not merely on the fact that it is an M.2 drive. Sony’s M.2 specifications reviewed on October 13, 2026, are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Requirement Sony’s stated specification
Drive type and interface PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe, M Key; M.2 SATA drives are unsupported
Capacity 250 GB–8 TB
Supported form factors 2230, 2242, 2260, 2280, or 22110
Maximum width 25 mm
Supported lengths 30, 42, 60, 80, or 110 mm
Maximum thickness 11.25 mm, including the cooling structure
Sequential read speed Sony recommends 5,500 MB/s or faster
Cooling A suitable heat-dissipation structure, such as a heatsink and heat-transfer sheet, is required

Check the complete drive and heatsink dimensions

Before buying, compare the manufacturer’s specifications for the exact drive configuration with Sony’s current requirements. Check the interface, capacity, form factor, width, length, and total thickness with its cooling structure attached. A bare SSD that fits the listed dimensions may exceed the thickness limit once a heatsink is installed.

The useful product-search phrase is PS5-compatible M.2 NVMe SSD with heatsink, but that phrase alone does not establish compatibility. Verify the listing’s actual specifications, including whether the cooling structure is included or must be added. Sony recommends sequential read speeds of 5,500 MB/s or faster, but warns that some games may not perform identically to the console’s internal SSD even when the M.2 drive exceeds that speed. Sony also does not guarantee compatibility or performance for every drive that meets the listed criteria.

Do not treat the capacity and speed figures as a recommendation for a particular brand or retail model. Check the exact drive, heatsink, and configuration being sold. Product descriptions can distinguish a bare drive from a drive bundled with a cooling structure, and the dimensions of the complete assembly are what matter for the fit check. No price or availability follows from Sony’s technical requirements, so compare current listings separately if you decide to buy.

Install only after confirming the current instructions

Installing an M.2 drive involves opening the console’s expansion bay and securing the drive and cooling structure in the correct position. Follow the current Sony instructions for your PS5 model rather than relying on a guide for a different console revision. Work with the console powered down and disconnected as Sony instructs. After installation, the console may prompt you to format the drive; formatting erases its contents, so do not proceed with a drive that contains files you need.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Once formatted, the M.2 SSD can be used as storage for PS5 games, and Sony’s PlayStation App documentation notes that downloads can in some configurations be directed to an M.2 SSD set as the default install location. Confirm the destination when downloading so a new game does not fill the storage you meant to preserve. If you do not want to open the console or verify these detailed requirements, deletion or USB archiving may be more appropriate for a one-off download.

Keep saved data separate from game installations

“Storage” can mean the space occupied by a game installation or the space used by saved data; they are different. Game installations are stored on console storage, M.2 storage, or USB extended storage. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is for saved data. It does not move installed game files off the console or create room for a large download.

Sony’s cloud-storage guidance reviewed on October 13, 2026, states limits of up to 100 GB of PS5 saved data and 100 GB of PS4 saved data, with a 1,000-file limit for PS4 saves. Cloud synchronization depends on the relevant rest-mode internet and auto-sync settings. Use cloud storage to preserve or sync saves, not as an alternative destination for a game installation.

In practical terms, uploading or syncing a save does not uninstall the game, and it does not turn cloud space into extra room for a PlayStation Plus download. If your problem is that a game will not fit, manage game and app installations or add supported game storage. If your concern is retaining progress, check save synchronization separately so you do not confuse a saved-data issue with an installation-space issue.

Start or manage a download remotely with the PlayStation App

The PlayStation App can be convenient if you want to start a download while away from the console or clear selected games remotely. Sony documents remote downloads through a paired app when the PS5 is in rest mode and Stay Connected to the Internet is enabled. The app can show available console and USB extended storage, delete selected games, and in some configurations download to an M.2 SSD set as the default install location.

The app does not move or copy games between drives. Use the console for transfers and for choosing the storage destination when the app’s available controls are not enough. If a remote download does not start, check that the app is paired with the correct console, the console is in rest mode, and its internet connection remains enabled in rest mode. Remote convenience does not change the storage rules: PS5 games on USB still need to be copied back before play, and cloud saves still are not game installations.

What to do when there still is not enough space

  • The game will not download: Recheck Settings > Storage and the current Store listing. Free additional space by deleting or moving content, then retry. Do not rely on a generic free-space figure for every game.
  • A USB drive is not accepted: Confirm it meets the stated 250 GB–8 TB and SuperSpeed USB 5 Gbps-or-later requirements, is connected directly rather than through a hub, and has been formatted as extended storage. Meeting the specifications does not guarantee that every device will work.
  • A PS5 game on USB will not launch: This is expected. Copy its game data back to console storage or M.2 storage before playing.
  • An M.2 drive does not fit: Recheck the total dimensions with the heatsink or other cooling structure attached. Compare the drive’s exact interface and form factor with Sony’s current requirements; M.2 SATA is not supported.
  • A deleted game is needed again: Download the purchased game from your library. Allow for the time and network connection needed to restore it.
  • A save is missing or not syncing: Check the relevant cloud and auto-sync settings, including rest-mode internet settings. Cloud saves are separate from the installed game and will not solve an installation-space shortage.
  • The PlayStation App cannot move a game: Use the console’s storage controls for copying or moving between drives. The app can show storage and delete selected games, but it does not move or copy games.

A practical order of operations

  1. Check Settings > Storage and note available space.
  2. Verify the game’s current Store listing and your access to it.
  3. Delete a game or app you can redownload, or remove eligible content using Customize.
  4. If you want to retain a PS5 game without playing it now, move it to USB extended storage and plan to copy it back before the next session.
  5. If the shortage keeps recurring and you want PS5 games directly playable from added storage, check every M.2 compatibility and cooling specification before purchasing.
  6. Keep cloud storage for saved data, and confirm the destination before starting the download.

For most first-time shortages, start with the storage screen and the specific game listing, then use the least disruptive free-space option that meets your needs. Buy extra hardware only if the same problem recurs or you want to keep more games ready. In particular, choose USB for PS5 game archiving and M.2 for direct play from added storage; they are not interchangeable.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does PlayStation Plus cloud storage save my games or free installation space?

No. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is for saved data, not installed game files. It can sync or transfer saves, but it does not uninstall games or create room for a large download. Sony’s guidance reviewed October 13, 2026, lists up to 100 GB each for PS5 and PS4 saved data, plus a 1,000-file limit for PS4 saves.

What should I check before buying an M.2 SSD for PS5?

Verify that the exact drive is PCIe Gen4x4 NVMe with an M Key, is 250 GB–8 TB, uses a supported form factor, and fits Sony’s width, length, and total-thickness limits with its cooling structure attached. Sony recommends sequential read speed of at least 5,500 MB/s and requires suitable heat dissipation. M.2 SATA drives are unsupported, and compatibility or performance is not guaranteed for every drive.

Will deleting a PS5 game remove my purchase?

Deleting a game removes its local installation, not the purchase from your library. You can download a deleted purchase again when you want to play, but you will need a network connection and time to restore it.

Can I use the PlayStation App to move games between storage drives?

No. The paired app can start remote downloads, show available console and USB extended storage, and delete selected games. Sony’s app guidance does not support moving or copying games between drives; use the console for transfers.

The Bottom Line

Check Settings > Storage and the game’s current Store listing first. Clear space by deleting or selectively removing content, or archive PS5 games on USB knowing they must be copied back before play. If you want PS5 games directly playable from added storage, verify every current M.2 requirement, including the complete drive-and-heatsink dimensions. Cloud saves preserve progress; they do not make room for game installations.
