You can add, delete, reorder, and move PDF pages between files on a Mac with Apple Preview. Open the PDF, choose View > Thumbnails, then edit the page thumbnails in the sidebar. You do not need a separate PDF editor for these basic changes.
Show page thumbnails in Preview
- Open the PDF in Preview.
- Choose View > Thumbnails to display page thumbnails in the sidebar. You can also choose View > Contact Sheet to see pages in a grid.
Add a page to a PDF
Select the thumbnail for the page that should come immediately before the new page. Then choose Edit > Insert > Page from File to add an existing page or document, or choose Edit > Insert > Blank Page to add an empty page. Preview inserts the new page after the selected page. The sidebar’s Add button also offers Insert from File and Insert Blank Page.

Delete one or more pages
Select the page thumbnail or thumbnails you want to remove, then press Delete or choose Edit > Delete. Deleting a page also removes any annotations on that page.
Reorder pages in the same PDF
Drag a thumbnail in the sidebar to its new position. Preview changes the page order when you drop it.

Move pages between two PDFs
- Open both PDFs in Preview and show thumbnails in each document.
- Drag the page thumbnail from one PDF’s sidebar into the other PDF’s sidebar.
To make a separate PDF from selected pages, drag their thumbnails to the desktop.
When to use another PDF editor
Preview covers basic page organization. Adobe Acrobat desktop also provides All tools > Organize pages; on Mac, Command-click selects multiple page thumbnails, and you can drag pages to move them. To move or copy pages between two Acrobat PDFs, open both files, choose Window > Tile > Vertically, then use Organize pages. Drag thumbnails to move them, or use Copy and Paste to copy them, and save the edited PDFs.

PDF Expert also advertises inserting, removing, extracting, and reordering PDF pages on Mac. These are vendor-described features; the available information does not establish that either alternative is necessary for the basic edits described above.
