Your result depends on the pay and deductions in your contract, the agreement covering your ship, onboard spending, transfer fees and the bills you still have at home. Build your budget from money actually deposited—not a headline salary or tips you have not been promised—and check it against your statements each month.
Start with the contract, not an average salary
Cruise workers do not all share one wage scale. The International Transport Workers’ Federation (ITF) says rates depend in part on whether a vessel is a national-flag ship or covered by an ITF agreement. The applicable collective bargaining agreement (CBA) may set pay, wage scales and working hours; your individual employment contract should identify the terms that apply to you. Keep a copy and confirm which agreement covers your vessel. See the ITF explanation of ITF agreements and its wage guidance.

A useful benchmark exists, but it is not a cruise-industry salary or take-home-pay estimate. ITF reports the ILO/JMC agreed basic monthly minimum for an able seafarer as follows:

These are the phased figures ITF reports following the JMC meetings of 14–15 April 2025; they apply to the able-seafarer benchmark, not every job grade or cruise role. They do not establish what a hotel, entertainment or other cruise worker will earn, nor how much any worker will take home after deductions.

Calculate what you can actually save
Use a contract-level worksheet rather than a supposed typical savings rate. Record each item in the currency in which it is paid, and distinguish guaranteed amounts from variable ones.
1. Work out income and pay timing
- Write down base pay, pay dates and any guaranteed overtime stated in the contract.
- Track variable overtime, gratuities or commission separately. Count them as budget income only when the contract or applicable terms confirm them; do not build a fixed savings commitment on an assumption.
- List deductions and note whether pay is monthly, paid in arrears or handled another way under your employer’s terms.
2. Measure the full cost of sending money home
- For each transfer, record the amount debited, transfer or intermediary fees, exchange rate and currency conversion.
- Check the amount that actually arrives in the recipient’s account. The debit from your shipboard account is not necessarily the amount your family receives.
- Compare the actual cost and delivery method against the alternatives available through your employer and bank, using their current terms rather than assuming fees are the same.
3. Track shipboard and home spending
- Use transaction records to categorize onboard purchases such as Wi-Fi, drinks, shops, cash withdrawals and port-day spending where applicable.
- Include bills, debt payments, family support and other commitments that continue at home during the contract.
- Include travel between home and the joining airport if that cost falls to you under your arrangements.
4. Set a savings target after a full pay cycle
Once you have seen a full pay cycle and recorded the actual costs, choose a target you can meet without relying on unconfirmed income. Keep room for timing gaps between pay, transfers and bills. At month-end, compare your plan with card and bank statements, correct any missed category and adjust the following month’s target. A paper planner can help organize the figures, but the contract and transaction records are the basis for the calculation.

Check the actual pay card, transfer and onboard rules
Payment arrangements vary by employer and vessel, so confirm them before relying on any budgeting example. As one employer-specific example, Princess Cruises says shipboard staff are paid monthly in arrears using a Brightwell Crew Card. Its information says transfers to personal accounts may carry a fee, crew-area ATMs may charge fees, and the vessel described is cashless for onboard purchases including Wi-Fi, shops and drinks. Those details are not an industry-wide rule; consult the employer’s current shipboard employment information and your own written terms.

- Base pay, payment currency and scheduled pay dates.
- Guaranteed versus variable overtime, tips or commission.
- The relevant flag-state rules, CBA and individual contract.
- Pay frequency, including whether payment is monthly in arrears.
- Card, ATM, remittance, wire-transfer and currency-conversion fees.
- Deductions, joining or travel costs, and costs the employer covers.
- Contract length and the leave period between contracts.
Do not rank employers on a headline wage alone; a fair comparison requires current, comparable contract and payment terms.
Protect your pay and your savings
ITF says wages under Maritime Labour Convention requirements should be paid at least monthly. Set a reminder for each payday, confirm the deposit arrived and save bank or pay-card statements alongside your contract and payment records. ITF recommends regular monthly payment arrangements and warns against a setup in which all wages accumulate until the contract ends while workers receive only small advances.

If wages are significantly delayed—ITF describes more than two weeks late—raise it with the captain. If you are unpaid, contact an ITF inspector or support channel promptly and gather your contract, ship details and evidence of the missing payment. ITF reports around 1,500 unpaid-wage complaints to its inspectors each year (the page does not give a year for this annual figure) and USD 58.1 million in owed wages recovered by ITF inspectors in 2024. These figures underline the value of keeping records; they do not measure an individual worker’s likelihood of nonpayment. See ITF’s guidance on withholding pay.
Avoid upfront job and training charges
Do not pay an agent upfront to secure a shipboard job or required training. ITF warns that these demands risk financial loss and undermine safety, and says charging for this is illegal under the Maritime Labour Convention. Read its cruise ship guidance before proceeding with a questionable offer.

What a savings estimate cannot tell you
No universal savings amount, typical onboard-spending budget or reliable cross-company salary comparison is established by the sources cited here. Tax and remittance-reporting obligations also depend on your residence, nationality, income and destination, so there is no single answer that applies to every worker. For those questions, seek guidance relevant to your own circumstances and jurisdictions.
