How Edge update management works in Windows Autopatch
Autopatch configures Edge updates through settings on each Windows Autopatch group. The update types selected for a group determine which policies the service creates. Microsoft says the documented flow uses the Edge Stable channel for ordinary eligible devices; devices in the separate Test device group receive feature updates from Beta. Microsoft documents Edge checking for updates every 10 hours. Quality updates are weekly by default, while Stable feature updates are progressively rolled out approximately every four weeks and become available within a few days of initial release. Microsoft may accelerate a rollout for critical security fixes. These are documented service behaviors, not a guarantee that a particular device will download or install an update at a specific time. Devices must be eligible, able to reach update services, and complete the update process.

Enable Microsoft Edge updates for an Autopatch group
- Open the Microsoft Intune admin center and go to Tenant Administration > Windows Autopatch > Autopatch groups.
- Select the group to configure and edit its Update types.
- Select Microsoft Edge updates, then proceed through the deployment settings and release schedules.
- Review the configuration and save it. Repeat these steps for each group that should receive Edge updates.
The group’s selected update types are the primary confirmation that Edge updates are included. A selection on one group does not configure other groups.

What devices need to update successfully
Autopatch does not remove the device-side requirements for update delivery. A device should be powered on and online, have access to Microsoft’s required service endpoints, and avoid conflicting Edge update policies. If Edge is open, it may need to be restarted for an update to finish applying.
- Enrollment and eligibility: Devices must already be enrolled in Intune before registration with Autopatch. Identity, licensing, and other requirements vary by tenant and device; use Microsoft’s current Windows Autopatch prerequisites rather than relying on a static checklist.
- Co-management: For co-managed devices, direct the required Windows Update and Device configuration workloads to Intune or Pilot Intune, as applicable.
- Network access: Allow required Microsoft service endpoints. For Edge specifically, consult the current endpoint list linked from Microsoft’s Windows Autopatch network requirements; endpoint lists can change.
- Policy compatibility: Review existing Edge update policies and profiles. Microsoft advises removing old default Edge channel profiles when applicable, but says customized policies may be retained to avoid disruption. Inspect what is assigned in your tenant before deleting anything.
Verify the generated Edge update policies
After saving the group settings, check Intune for the policies Autopatch created. Microsoft documents this naming pattern: Windows Autopatch Microsoft Edge Update Policy - <group name> - <ring name>.

- In the Intune admin center, open Devices > Manage devices > Configuration > Policies.
- Look for the expected Edge update policy or policies, matching the group and ring names.
- If a policy is missing or the device is not updating, return to the group’s Update types setting and review assigned profiles and policies for conflicts.
A generated policy confirms that Autopatch created configuration; it does not, on its own, prove that every device received or completed the update.

- The group does not include Edge: Confirm that Microsoft Edge updates is selected for the specific group containing the device.
- A policy conflicts: Review generated profiles alongside older default channel profiles and customized policies. Do not remove a customized policy until you understand its assignments and intended behavior.
- The device cannot reach update services: Check that it is online and that network controls allow the current Microsoft Edge update endpoints.
- Edge has not restarted: If the browser remains open, restart it and allow the update process to complete.
- The rollout is still progressing: Microsoft describes staged availability and does not promise a precise installation time for each endpoint.

Can Autopatch pause Edge updates?
No. Microsoft’s Edge-specific Autopatch documentation says, “Currently, Windows Autopatch can’t pause or resume Microsoft Edge updates.” Do not treat Windows quality- or feature-update pause controls as Edge controls.
Microsoft’s general Microsoft Edge Update policy reference separately describes policy choices including “Always allow updates (1) (Recommended),” manual updates only, automatic silent updates only, and updates disabled. These are general Edge Update policy options, not a pause/resume feature in the Autopatch group UI. If updates are disabled through policy, Microsoft says administrators should periodically check for and distribute updates themselves. Review policy ownership and precedence before assigning direct policies alongside Autopatch configuration.

Autopatch groups or directly assigned Edge policies?

These are different administration models, not documented performance or cost tiers. Avoid overlapping assignments that create conflicts.
When to contact Microsoft
If configuration, connectivity, policy precedence, device status, and Edge restart requirements do not explain the problem, Microsoft’s Edge guide directs eligible customers to submit a support request. The guide states that support request access depends on E3+ or F licenses; verify current licensing and support eligibility in Microsoft’s documentation before relying on that entitlement.
