To give another player access to your The Lord of the Rings Online home, open Housing Management > Permissions. Choose the player or group, then enable only the rights they need. Visitor access allows a visit; it does not grant chest use, upkeep payments, or decorating. Housing Chest access is two-way, so an authorized player can both deposit and withdraw items.
Open the housing permissions panel
- Click the radar icon to open the Housing Management panel.
- Select Permissions.
- Choose a target category and, if needed, add the character name.
- Tick only the permission boxes required for that player or group.

Choose who receives access
The available targets depend on the home type. Standard and deluxe homes list Individual, Everyone, and Kinship. For an individual character, use ADD or REMOVE and enter the character name. Kinship homes also offer Kinship Leader, Kinship Member, Kinship Recruit, and Kinship Officer.
Prefer an individual or the narrowest relevant kinship category when access is meant for a specific person or role. Everyone applies broadly, so it is not the right shortcut for a single friend.

What each permission allows

The owner or a player with chest permission must be at the house to unlock and access the chest. The official FAQ cautions owners to assign housing permissions wisely.
Give a friend access without granting more than intended
- For a visit: add the character under Individual and enable Visitor.
- For chest use: enable Housing Chests only if you are comfortable with both deposits and withdrawals. The game does not document a way to allow deposits while preventing withdrawals.
- For upkeep payments or decorating: enable Upkeep or Decorate as needed; these are separate from Visitor.
- For help managing access: consider Manage Permissions only if the person should also be able to change the other four grants.
Do not confuse player permissions with Neighbours
LOTRO’s newer Neighbours feature is a separate system, not another player-access level. Standing Stone Games’ New to the Neighbourhood!, dated August 2, 2026, describes inviting an NPC companion with a special item placed on a housing hook. The feature includes conversations, gifts, and missions; it does not describe a change to the owner-managed player permissions in the Housing Management panel.

Upkeep and access housekeeping
Permission grants do not prevent upkeep problems. The Housing FAQs say overdue upkeep locks a home and can lead to foreclosure; a locked home loses access to housing benefits. The documented payment path is Housing Management > Maintenance > Deposit Upkeep, and restoration is available through the maintenance interface.

The FAQ says items from an abandoned home stay in escrow for 14 days, while items from a foreclosed home remain indefinitely. These are consequential rules that may change, so check the live Housing FAQs before abandoning a home. Decoration is optional: the FAQ says decoration mode works on the house property and lists neighborhood Housing Furnishers and the Auction House as in-game decoration sources.
