To manage what opens when you sign in to a Mac, go to Apple menu > System Settings > General > Login Items & Extensions. Add or remove entries under Open at Login. Background activity and windows restored from a previous session are controlled separately, so check those settings too if an app keeps appearing.

Add or remove items that open at login
The Open at Login list controls apps and other items set to open when you log in. To add one, select the add control, choose an app, document, folder, or server connection, then confirm. To stop an item opening automatically, select it in the list and use the remove control. These steps change the ongoing list; they do not prevent an item from opening for other reasons.

Understand background activity separately
App Background Activity is not the same as Open at Login. It allows an app to do work while it is not open, such as checking for software updates or syncing data. Disabling it may interfere with those functions. Apple describes this control in its guide to opening items automatically when you log in.
Skip login items for one login
If you need to start a session without opening the listed items, bypass them temporarily rather than removing them:

- At the login window, hold Shift while clicking Log In.
- Release Shift when the Dock appears.
If your Mac does not show a login window, restart it and hold Shift when the startup progress bar appears; keep holding it until the desktop is shown. This bypass applies to that login only and does not change the saved list. Apple’s login items guide describes the procedure.
Find a login item that may be causing startup trouble
If you suspect a login item is behind a startup problem, Apple recommends isolating the cause by removing the current list and restoring entries one at a time. Follow its login-item troubleshooting steps:

- Make a note of the items currently listed under Open at Login.
- Remove all of them, then restart the Mac and check whether the problem remains.
- If the problem is gone, add one item back and restart.
- Repeat with one item at a time. If the issue returns, investigate the last item added: remove it and consult its developer.
This process helps identify a possible cause; it does not mean unrelated items should be permanently removed.
If an app or its windows still reopen
An app can reappear even when it is not in Open at Login. When shutting down, restarting, or logging out, check whether Reopen windows when logging back in is selected. macOS also has a separate control for closing windows when you quit apps. For an app that continues to open without appearing in the login list, check the app’s own preferences or documentation, or contact its developer. When a Mac is managed by an organization
An administrator can configure login items and background tasks on managed Macs. If a setting is unavailable or an item returns after you remove it, organizational policy may be controlling it; ask your Mac administrator before trying to override it. Apple’s managed Login Items payload documentation describes these controls.
Administrator troubleshooting note
Apple’s deployment guidance for the Login and Background Item management framework describes ways administrators can inspect registrations, including the diagnostic command sfltool dumpbtm. Apple’s documentation, published December 17, 2025, also notes that on macOS 26 or later a user may be prompted about background tasks that remain active after an app quits; management profiles can affect those alerts.
