On iPhone and iPad, manage Google Maps through iOS Location Services; check Gemini’s own entry there rather than assuming the Maps setting controls it. Android also separates how long an app may access location from whether that access is precise.
Change Gemini’s location access on Android
- Open Settings.
- Tap Location > App location permissions > Google.
- Choose the access duration: Allow all the time, Allow only while using the app, Ask every time, or Don’t allow. Labels can vary by Android version and device maker.
- To limit accuracy, review Use precise location and turn it off if you want to allow only approximate location, where supported.
Gemini mobile uses the permissions selected for the Google app, which hosts assistant capabilities used by Gemini and Google Assistant. That is why you may not see a separate Gemini entry in Android’s app-location list. Changing this permission can also affect other Google app features, including weather and nearby Search results. Google describes the setting in its Gemini mobile app help.

Change Google Maps location access
Android
- Find the Google Maps icon, then open App info (often available by long-pressing the icon).
- Tap Permissions > Location.
- Select the access you want: Allow all the time, Only while using the app, Ask every time, or Deny. If location is allowed, Android may also offer a separate Use precise location control.
Google’s Android instructions are in Google Maps Help. If you deny Maps location, live-location functions such as turn-by-turn navigation stop working, but you can still view a route preview and written directions.

- Open Settings > Privacy > Location Services.
- Make sure Location Services is on, then tap Google Maps.
- Choose Never, Ask Next Time, While Using the App, or Always.
These choices are documented in Google Maps Help. Without location access, turn-by-turn navigation and other real-time location functions are unavailable, but a route preview and directions list remain.

Understand duration, precision, and device location
On Android, the permission duration controls when an app can use location. Use precise location controls how exact that location can be, when the device and app support the distinction. Google defines approximate location as an area of about 3 square kilometers and precise location as the device’s exact location; these are Google’s published definitions in Google Account Help.
The device-wide Location switch is broader than an individual app permission: turning it off affects location behavior across apps and services. Android menu paths and labels can differ by manufacturer and release; Google notes that some Pixel-specific guidance applies only to Android 11 and later in its Gemini mobile app help and Android location-permission guidance.

What the permissions mean for Gemini privacy
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, last updated June 29, 2026, says Gemini may use a general area inferred from an IP address or a saved Home or Work address for relevant responses. With permission, it may also process precise device location. The notice cautions that Gemini can receive precise location from another Google service, such as Google Maps, even if precise location for the Google app is off. So turning off the Google app’s precise-location setting controls one route; it is not a guarantee that no precise location can reach Gemini through any Google service.

The same notice says precise location processed with permission from a device or browser is not stored in Gemini Apps Activity. Location that Gemini does store with Activity is coarsened to a general area larger than 3 square kilometers and with at least 1,000 users. Those are Google’s stated handling descriptions, not an independent privacy audit. A city or address can still appear in the text of a conversation if you or Gemini writes it there.

Gemini may share precise location with another Google service, including Maps, to fulfil a request; the receiving service handles that information under the Google Privacy Policy. Google also says Gemini may receive precise location from services such as Android Auto. Location can have more than one source, so no single app-permission switch should be treated as the complete control for every Google service.
Use Gemini’s Google Maps features
Gemini can use public Google Maps information to find businesses, shops, restaurants, parks, and attractions; provide details and opening hours; and give directions based on a travel mode. It can use device location with permission or saved Home and Work locations in your Google Account. Google’s feature details are in Gemini Apps Help.

- You must be signed in to Gemini and have Keep Activity turned on to use the Maps-connected feature.
- It is not available in Gemini Live chats or Gemini in Google Messages.
- Some place-detail and interactive-map features are rolling out gradually and may require a personal Google Account, age 18 or older, and asking about a place in English.
- When connected to Maps, Gemini does not support saving location history, using saved places other than Home or Work, providing live traffic updates, or adding a place review.
If you use Gemini in a browser
Browser-based location involves separate controls: the browser or device permission and the website’s permission (for example, for google.com). The precise menus depend on your browser and platform, so there is no single universal path. Google explains the distinction in its Gemini Apps Privacy Notice and Gemini Apps Help.

Do not use the Google Maps iOS setting as a substitute for Gemini’s setting. In iOS, open Settings > Privacy > Location Services and inspect the entry for the Gemini app, if present. Select from the options shown on your device. Google’s cited Maps instructions establish the Maps path, but do not specify a Gemini-specific iOS path or verify its current labels.
