Check the permissions granted to your device and Google apps, the Home and Work addresses saved to your Google Account, and Gemini Apps Activity separately; each governs a different part of a place-search or directions request.
What Gemini can know about your location
When you ask Gemini for a nearby place or directions, it can work with more than one kind of location signal. Google describes a general area that may be inferred from your IP address or from Home and Work addresses saved in your Google Account. If an app or browser has permission, Gemini can also process precise device location.

There is an important additional route: Gemini may receive precise location from another Google service, such as Google Maps, even when the precise-location setting in the Google app is turned off. Therefore, switching off one Google-app setting does not guarantee that no precise location can be used for a Maps-related answer.

Four controls you need to check

Because these layers are independent, a privacy review is incomplete if it checks only the permission dialog shown the last time Gemini asked for location.
How the Maps connection works
Google says Gemini can use public Maps information to discover places and provide details such as an address, description, website, ratings and opening hours. It can also give directions by travel mode. A request such as “Where’s the closest coffee shop and what time does it open?” may use your current location, a general area or a saved Home or Work address, depending on what is available and what you have authorized.
The places-and-directions feature requires you to be signed in and to have Keep Activity turned on. Google currently says it is unavailable in Live chats and in Gemini in Google Messages. Additional Maps-in-Gemini capabilities are being released gradually; availability can depend on factors including age 18 or older, use of a personal Google Account and asking about a place in English. These conditions can change as the rollout expands.
Gemini’s Maps connection is narrower than the full Maps application. Google says it cannot save Location History, use saved places other than Home or Work, provide live traffic updates or add a review. If you need one of those actions, open Maps directly rather than assuming a Gemini answer has performed it.
Review location permissions before using Gemini
Android phones and tablets
On Android, the Gemini mobile app uses the location permissions selected for the Google app. Google describes the Google app as the host for assistant capabilities used by Gemini and Google Assistant. Review that permission in your device’s app-permission settings, then review Google Maps separately in the same system settings area. The exact labels and menu order vary by Android release and device manufacturer.

- Open the device settings and find the list of installed apps or app permissions.
- Select the Google app and inspect its Location permission. Choose the least access level that still supports the tasks you want, or remove location access entirely.
- Open the entry for Google Maps and review its Location permission independently; it can have a different choice from the Google app.
- Check the device-wide Location setting as well. A device-level setting can prevent location use even when an app-level permission remains selected.
- Return to Gemini and test a request only after deciding whether you want a general-area answer or a precise nearby result.
Removing the Google app’s location permission is not a deletion command. It changes future access; it does not clear saved conversations or remove account addresses.
iPhone, iPad and browser sessions
Use the operating system’s privacy or location-services screen to review any Gemini, Google app or Google Maps entry that appears, and use the browser’s site-permission controls for a browser-based session. Apple, browser and operating-system releases use different labels, so follow the names shown on your device rather than a fixed menu path. If no Gemini-specific entry is listed, check the Google app or the browser that is hosting Gemini.
Also inspect the Maps permission on the same device. A browser or another Google application may have its own permission state, so changing a setting in one place may not change the others.
Check your Home and Work addresses
Gemini can use the Home and Work addresses saved in your Google Account for directions. This is why a directions request can still be personalized even when you have not granted precise device location.
- Open your Google Account’s personal-information or address settings.
- Review the saved Home and Work entries for accuracy and remove or edit any address you no longer want associated with the account.
- Consider whether the labels themselves reveal more than you need. A workplace address, for example, can identify a regular location even without a live location signal.
- After making a change, start a new Gemini request and use an explicit place name when you do not want the answer based on Home or Work.
Google’s Maps connection does not use other saved places for this Gemini feature. A favorite or custom saved place therefore should not be treated as an additional supported source for Gemini directions.

Manage Gemini Apps Activity separately
Permissions and history answer different privacy questions. Google says you can review and delete Gemini Apps Activity at any time. Use the Gemini activity controls in your Google Account to inspect conversations and remove individual items or the available history range.
- Open Gemini Apps Activity from your Google Account or the activity link provided in Gemini’s account controls.
- Review the dates and prompt text, looking for city names, addresses, landmarks or travel plans that you do not want retained.
- Delete the items or range you choose, then confirm the deletion shown by the account interface.
- Review the activity setting itself. Keep Activity must be on for the Maps places-and-directions feature described by Google; changing it can affect feature availability.
Turning off a location permission does not erase chat records. Conversely, deleting a chat does not revoke a permission that could allow a future request to use location. Treat the permission review and activity review as two separate maintenance tasks.
What Google says is stored about precise location
Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub distinguishes precise location processed with permission from a device or browser from location information represented in stored activity. Its stated wording is: “Precise location that is processed with your permission from your device or browser is not stored in your Gemini Apps Activity.”
Google also says that location Gemini processes is coarsened before storage. The published description says the resulting general area is larger than 3 square kilometres and includes at least 1,000 users; outside cities it is typically larger. These are thresholds in Google’s own description, not an independent audit or a guarantee that every practical data flow has been tested by a third party.
The storage distinction does not make chat text location-neutral. If you type a street, city or landmark, or Gemini includes one in its response, that information can be present in the conversation record. Review and delete activity when the text itself is sensitive.

When Gemini shares precise location with another Google service such as Maps to fulfill a request, Google says the receiving service handles it under the Google Privacy Policy. That cross-service handling is another reason to review Maps permissions and account activity rather than relying on a single Gemini toggle.

Before you ask
- Decide whether you need a precise nearby result or only a city-level recommendation.
- Check the Google app and Google Maps location permissions on the device you are using.
- Review Home and Work addresses if the request might be interpreted relative to either one.
- Confirm that you are signed in and understand that Keep Activity needs to be on for the Maps feature.
Use an explicit prompt when precision is unnecessary
Instead of relying on “near me,” name a city, neighborhood or transit stop when that is sufficient. You can ask for “parks with playgrounds in central Manchester” rather than supplying a live position. This limits ambiguity in the request itself, although the resulting place names can still appear in the saved chat.
Ask for directions with a clear reference point
If you want to use a saved address, say whether the route should start from Home or Work. If you do not, provide a named starting point. Google gives the example, “Find me a park with a playground that’s within a 10 min drive from where I am now.” That wording asks for a current-location calculation and may require a precise signal from the device or a connected Google service.
After the answer
- Check the place name, address, opening hours and travel mode in the answer before traveling; Maps data can change.
- Open Maps directly for live traffic, Location History, review posting or saved places beyond Home and Work.
- Delete the conversation if its prompt or response contains a location detail you do not want in Gemini Apps Activity.
Common privacy and accuracy problems
Gemini gives a city-level answer instead of a nearby result
A general area inferred from an IP address, or a coarsened location, may not be precise enough for a close-by search. Check whether the relevant app has location permission and whether the device-wide Location setting is enabled. If you prefer not to grant precise access, provide a neighborhood or landmark in the prompt and accept that the result will be based on that text.

The result is based on the wrong starting point
Review Home and Work addresses and identify the intended starting point explicitly. If another Google service is supplying a current position, check that Maps is using the device and account you expect. Do not assume that changing only the Google app’s precise-location switch removes every possible service-supplied location path.
You expected live traffic or a saved action
The Gemini Maps connection does not provide live traffic updates, save Location History, use saved places other than Home or Work, or add reviews. Use the full Maps app for those tasks. A Gemini response suggesting a route is not evidence that one of these unsupported actions was completed.
You want the feature but Keep Activity is off
Google lists sign-in and Keep Activity being on as requirements for the places-and-directions feature. You must choose between enabling that activity setting and using a different workflow, such as searching in Maps directly. If you enable it, make activity review and deletion part of your routine.
A prompt contains a sensitive location
Delete the conversation from Gemini Apps Activity, then review other chats for copied addresses or place names. Removing location permission afterward can prevent a future precise reading, but it does not remove text already stored in a chat.

- Keep Activity status understood before using Gemini place searches.
- Gemini Apps Activity reviewed and unwanted chats deleted.
- Maps opened directly for traffic, Location History, reviews or other saved places.
- Gemini feature availability checked if the request is in Live chat, Google Messages, a non-personal account or a language other than English.
What to remember
Gemini with Maps is not governed by one master location switch. Device and app permissions, account addresses, cross-service Maps access and Gemini Apps Activity affect different stages of the request. The safest practical approach is to grant only the permission needed for the task, remove outdated Home or Work data, avoid putting unnecessary addresses in prompts, and review the resulting activity afterward.
