To manage internal DNS hostnames with infrastructure code, create a private DNS zone, associate it with the networks that should resolve it, add records for your services, then apply and verify the configuration from an intended client network. The example below uses Amazon Route 53 and Terraform; these resource names and network prerequisites are AWS-specific.
How the pieces fit together
A private DNS zone holds names that should resolve only for clients with access through an associated network. In AWS, Route 53 private hosted zones are associated with one or more VPCs. A record inside the zone maps a hostname to a target, such as an IP address. This is different from publishing a name in public DNS: a query from outside the private network will not be answered by the private hosted zone. AWS explains private hosted-zone behavior.

For a service named db.internal.example.com, for instance, the zone might be internal.example.com and an A record might point db to the database’s private IPv4 address. Choose the record type and target that match the service and its addressing; the example is not a substitute for confirming the service’s actual endpoint.

Four deploy steps for Route 53 and Terraform
1. Enable DNS in the VPC
Both DNS support and DNS hostnames must be enabled on the VPC that will use the private hosted zone. Check the VPC configuration before creating the zone or debugging a record. AWS lists both attributes as requirements for private hosted-zone use: private hosted-zone considerations.
#1 Best Overall
- Dual band router upgrades to 1200 Mbps high speed internet (300mbps for 2.4GHz plus 900Mbps for 5GHz), reducing buffering and ideal for 4K stream
- Full Gigabit Ports - Gigabit Router with 4 Gigabit LAN ports, ideal for any internet plan and allow you to directly connect your wired devices
- Boosted Coverage - Four external antennas equipped with Beamforming technology extend and concentrate the Wi-Fi signals
- MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously
- Access Point Mode - Supports AP Mode to transform your wired connection into wireless network, an ideal wireless router for home
2. Declare the zone and its VPC association
Use Terraform’s AWS provider to define a Route 53 private hosted zone and associate it with each VPC whose clients need to resolve its names. A private zone must remain associated with at least one VPC when managed through the provider. Review the current resource documentation for the configuration supported by your provider version: Terraform AWS provider: aws_route53_zone.
Terraform documents inline VPC association blocks on the zone and a separate association resource as alternative management approaches. Do not mix the two approaches for the same zone: the provider warns that doing so can produce persistent plan differences. Pick one approach and manage the zone’s associations consistently.

3. Declare records for internal services
Add a record for each hostname clients need. For an address, that commonly means an A record for IPv4 or an AAAA record for IPv6. In Terraform, records are managed separately from the zone; make sure each record’s zone reference points to the intended private zone. AWS’s private-zone guide demonstrates an address record for db.example.com and describes how records supply DNS answers: Route 53 private hosted zones.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Apply and verify from the intended network
-
Review the Terraform plan and confirm that it creates or updates the intended private zone, VPC association, and records without changing unrelated DNS resources.

A query from a laptop or other network outside the associated VPC or supported hybrid path does not test the private zone. AWS notes that such queries are resolved through the public internet’s recursive DNS path rather than answered by the private hosted zone. A failed external lookup therefore does not by itself show that the internal record is misconfigured.
Check namespace and association conflicts before deployment
Before applying, check whether the target VPC already has a private hosted zone with the same namespace. AWS says identical private-zone namespaces cannot both be associated with the same VPC; an existing association can prevent the intended design from working. Review current associations before introducing a second zone: AWS guidance for creating a private hosted zone.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.

- DNS attributes: DNS support and DNS hostnames are enabled on the relevant VPC.
- Associations: The zone is associated with every intended VPC, and at least one association remains in Terraform-managed configuration.
- Terraform ownership: The zone’s VPC associations use one management method, not a mixture of inline and separate association resources.
- Namespace: No conflicting same-name private zone is associated with the same VPC.
- Verification location: The test query runs from an associated VPC or a supported hybrid path.
What changes with another cloud provider?
The workflow’s concepts—private zone, network access, records, deployment, and network-local verification—are useful across providers, but AWS resource syntax and VPC association requirements are not provider-neutral. Azure has a separate Terraform workflow for Azure Private DNS zones; consult Microsoft’s Terraform quickstart for Azure private DNS zones and adapt the network prerequisites to that provider. Do not copy AWS resources into an Azure configuration or assume that association behavior is identical.
