Use four separate controls to reduce Grok data use on X: disable model-training and fine-tuning, disable personalization, delete existing conversation history, and protect your posts. These controls address different data and time periods, so changing only one does not replace the others. X says deleted conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days, subject to security and legal-retention exceptions.
What each Grok privacy control actually changes
X places the main controls under Privacy & Safety → Data sharing and personalization → Grok & Third-party Collaborators. The settings are independent: one governs future model training, another governs personalization, and a separate action removes stored conversation history. Protecting your posts is an additional audience and data-use control outside that Grok submenu.

| Control | Data or activity covered | Purpose affected | Time horizon | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Data Sharing | Public X data plus Grok interactions, inputs and results | Model creation and fine-tuning by xAI | Future use after you switch it off | Feedback on a conversation may still allow that conversation and related data to be used for training. |
| Grok Personalization | Personal data used to tailor your Grok experience | Personalized Grok responses or experience | Future personalization | Grok remains available after you opt out. |
| Delete Conversation History | Existing Grok interactions, inputs and results | Removal of retained history | Past data; deletion can take up to 30 days | X cites security and legal reasons as exceptions to deletion. |
| Protect your posts | Your posts and their visibility | Audience access and use of protected posts in underlying Grok and xAI models or answers | Posts made or kept protected | This does not replace the conversation controls. |
X’s Help Center guidance was accessed on October 13, 2026. X does not expose a publication or last-updated date on the retrieved pages, and menu wording can change by account, region or app version. Treat the labels below as the published navigation path, then look for the closest current wording if your interface differs.
Turn off use of your data for Grok training and fine-tuning
This is the setting to change if you do not want X’s published categories of public data and Grok activity used for xAI’s model creation or fine-tuning. It is a prospective control: it does not itself erase conversations that already exist.

- Sign in to X and open Settings and privacy.
- Choose Privacy & Safety.
- Open Data sharing and personalization.
- Select Grok & Third-party Collaborators.
- Open Data Sharing.
- Turn off the option that allows public X data and interactions, inputs and results with Grok and xAI to be used for training and fine-tuning.
X says you can continue using Grok after this opt-out. The setting concerns model creation and fine-tuning conducted by xAI; it is not a promise that a deployed model cannot learn from normal operation of X features powered by Grok.
What this opt-out covers
X describes the potentially shared material as public X data and Grok interaction inputs and outputs. Its categories include public posts, associated metadata such as engagement and reposts, public Spaces, public profiles, user interests and interactions. Voice inputs may be transcribed or translated, and X says those inputs, transcripts or translations may be shared. The setting is therefore broader than the text you deliberately type into a single chat.
What the opt-out does not do
- It does not delete existing conversations. Use Delete Conversation History separately.
- It does not make a deployed Grok-powered feature stop learning from ordinary use of X features, according to X’s explanation.
- It does not prevent a conversation from potentially being used when you submit feedback on it.
- It does not protect public posts. If limiting post visibility and their use is also important, enable Protect your posts.
Turn off Grok personalization separately
Personalization is a different purpose from model training. A user can disable training and leave personalization on, or do the reverse, so review both toggles.

- Find Grok Personalization.
- Turn off the option allowing X to personalize your Grok experience.
X says Grok remains available after this change, but your personal data will not be used to personalize that experience. This prospective setting also does not remove earlier conversations; history deletion is a separate action.
Delete your existing Grok conversation history
Deleting history is the action for conversations already retained by X. It is distinct from both opt-outs above.
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Choose Privacy & Safety.
- Open Data sharing and personalization.
- Select Grok.
- Choose Delete Conversation History.
- Confirm that you want to delete the interactions, inputs and results.
X says deleted conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days. That is a stated service-retention timeframe, not an independently measured statistic. X also says it may retain information when required for security or legal reasons, so “delete” does not guarantee immediate removal from every system or a zero-retention result.
Why deletion and opt-out belong together
Turning off Data Sharing limits specified future use for model creation and fine-tuning; it does not act retroactively on stored history. Deleting history addresses existing interactions, inputs and results; it does not automatically change the future training or personalization choices. If you want both outcomes, perform the two opt-outs and then submit the deletion request.

Protect your public X posts
Grok controls do not substitute for post privacy. To restrict the visibility and model use of posts, use X’s audience setting:
- Open Settings and privacy.
- Go to Privacy & Safety.
- Open Audience and tagging.
- Enable Protect your posts.
X says protected posts have limited visibility and are not used to train the underlying Grok and xAI models or surfaced in response to user queries. This setting concerns your posts and audience; it does not erase Grok conversations or disable personalization. Review it as an additional layer when public-post exposure is part of your concern.
Exceptions that remain after you change the settings
Conversation feedback can permit training use
X says that submitting feedback on a conversation, including a thumbs-up or thumbs-down, may allow X and xAI to use that conversation and related data to train and fine-tune Grok. X recommends not submitting such feedback if you do not want that use. This is the clearest stated exception to rely on when deciding whether to rate an answer after opting out of Data Sharing.
Normal operation of Grok-powered X features is different from model training
X describes the training toggle as applying to model creation and fine-tuning. It also says the toggle does not prevent a deployed model from learning as a result of normal use of X features powered by Grok, such as recommendations. Therefore, an opt-out should not be interpreted as a guarantee that no operational data is processed by every Grok-powered feature.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Adding Grok to an encrypted Chat changes who can access messages
X says Chat conversations are end-to-end encrypted, but adding @Grok is a separate disclosure choice. According to X, when Grok is added, X and SpaceXAI can access all messages from the moment Grok is added until it is removed. X also says text or images sent to Grok are no longer encrypted. Removing Grok later stops that continuing access for the period after removal, but it does not change the fact that messages were exposed while Grok was present.
Sensitive information should stay out of Grok conversations
X’s Grok help guidance warns: “Please do not share personal data or any sensitive and confidential information in your conversations with Grok.” The warning matters even when you have disabled training and personalization, because those settings do not promise that information is never processed to provide the service, retained for security or legal reasons, or exposed through a separate Chat integration.
How X describes the data involved
The following categories explain why a single toggle cannot cover every exposure:

| Category | Examples described by X | Where it can arise |
|---|---|---|
| Public X content | Public posts, public Spaces and public profiles | Content visible to the public on X. |
| Associated metadata | Engagement and repost activity | Activity connected with public content. |
| Profile and interest information | User interests and interactions | Your use of X and interactions with accounts or content. |
| Grok prompts and outputs | Inputs, interactions and results | Text or other material exchanged with Grok. |
| Voice material | Voice inputs, transcriptions and translations | Voice features where available. |
| Chat messages sent to Grok | All messages in a Chat while Grok is added | An encrypted Chat conversation after @Grok is invited. |
These categories are X’s description of data that may be shared or accessed; they are not a promise that every category is collected for every account or feature. Availability and processing can vary by product experience, account and region.
A privacy-first sequence for changing the settings
If your goal is to minimize both future use and existing retained history, use this order:
- Disable Data Sharing. This addresses future use of the stated public-data and Grok-activity categories for model creation and fine-tuning.
- Disable Grok Personalization. This separately stops personal data from being used to tailor your Grok experience.
- Delete Conversation History. Submit the deletion confirmation for existing interactions, inputs and results, then allow up to 30 days for removal, subject to the stated exceptions.
- Protect your posts if public-post exposure matters. This limits post visibility and X says prevents protected posts from being used for underlying Grok and xAI models or surfaced in answers.
- Stop sending feedback on conversations you want excluded. X says thumbs-up and thumbs-down feedback may create a training-use exception.
- Remove Grok from Chats where confidentiality is required. Do not add
@Grokto an end-to-end encrypted Chat containing messages you do not want X and SpaceXAI to access.
Checking that a change took effect
After changing a toggle, return to the same Grok & Third-party Collaborators page and confirm that the control is visibly off. If the page reloads with the old state, check that you completed the final save or confirmation action and that you are signed into the intended X account. A browser and mobile app may present the same setting under slightly different wording; follow the setting’s description rather than relying only on its position.
For history deletion, look for the confirmation after selecting Delete Conversation History. Keep in mind that an empty visible history is not proof that every copy has already been removed: X’s stated window is up to 30 days, with security and legal-retention exceptions.
Choosing controls for common goals
“I do not want my chats used to improve models.”
Turn off Data Sharing, avoid conversation feedback, and delete existing history. The feedback exception and the separate deletion timetable are the two details most likely to undermine an otherwise complete change.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
“I want Grok available, but not tailored with my personal data.”
Turn off Grok Personalization. X says the service remains available, so this change is narrower than disabling Grok itself.
“I am worried about public posts being used or found.”
Enable Protect your posts. This addresses post visibility and the use of protected posts described by X; it does not delete Grok conversations or change personalization.

“I need a confidential Chat.”
Do not add @Grok. X says adding it gives X and SpaceXAI access to all messages from that point until removal, and text or images sent to Grok are no longer encrypted.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing only one toggle. Data Sharing and Grok Personalization serve different purposes. Review both if you want to limit both training and tailored responses.
- Assuming an opt-out erases old chats. The training and personalization switches are prospective. Use Delete Conversation History for existing interactions, inputs and results.
- Rating a conversation after opting out. X says thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback may allow that conversation and related data to be used for training and fine-tuning.
- Confusing protected posts with private conversations. Protect your posts changes the audience and stated model use of posts; it does not delete Grok history or secure a Chat where Grok is present.
- Assuming encryption continues after inviting Grok. X says messages in a Chat are no longer encrypted when text or images are sent to Grok, and X and SpaceXAI can access messages while Grok is added.
- Treating the 30-day period as an instant purge. X describes removal from its systems within 30 days and identifies security and legal-retention exceptions.
Matching the control to the data and purpose
Use four questions when deciding what to change: What data is involved? Public posts and their metadata are different from private prompts, outputs or voice transcripts. Why is it being processed? Model creation and fine-tuning are not the same purpose as personalizing your Grok experience. When do you want the change to apply? Opt-outs address future use, while deletion addresses retained history. What exceptions matter? Feedback, ordinary operation of Grok-powered X features, security or legal retention, and Chat access each sit outside at least one control.
For example, a user concerned only about tailored responses may turn off Grok Personalization and continue using Grok. Someone concerned about past prompts should also request history deletion. A user whose concern is public-post exposure needs Protect your posts, even if no Grok conversation has ever been opened. Someone handling confidential Chat messages should not add Grok at all, because the Chat disclosure occurs independently of the settings for training and personalization.
What to do after changing settings
Keep a short record of the controls you changed and the date, especially if you manage more than one X account. Revisit the page periodically because X can change labels or placement. If you use both the website and an app, verify the state from the account you actually use; a setting changed on one signed-in account does not imply the same setting changed on another.
Continue to treat every Grok prompt as information sent to an online service. Avoid personal, sensitive and confidential information, including information about other people that you are not authorized to disclose. The settings reduce particular forms of use, but X’s warning and the Chat exception show why minimizing the information you send remains important.
Bottom line
For the broadest control available in X’s published settings, switch off both Data Sharing and Grok Personalization, delete existing history, and protect your posts if public visibility is a concern. Do not submit conversation feedback you want excluded, do not put sensitive information into Grok, and do not invite Grok into a Chat that must remain end-to-end confidential. Recheck the menu periodically because X can change labels and placement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFrequently Asked Questions
Does turning off Data Sharing disable Grok?
No. X says you can continue using Grok after turning off the option that allows public X data and Grok interactions, inputs and results to be used for model training and fine-tuning.
Best Value
Is Grok Personalization the same as the training opt-out?
No. They are separate controls. Data Sharing concerns model creation and fine-tuning, while Grok Personalization concerns using personal data to tailor your Grok experience. Review both if you want both limits.
How long does deleting Grok history take?
X says deleted conversations are removed from its systems within 30 days. It may retain information when required for security or legal reasons, so removal is not necessarily immediate from every system.
Can feedback still be used for training after I opt out?
X says submitting feedback such as a thumbs-up or thumbs-down may allow X and xAI to use that conversation and related data to train and fine-tune Grok. Avoid feedback on conversations you want excluded.
Does protecting my posts delete Grok conversations?
No. Protect your posts limits post visibility and, according to X, prevents protected posts from being used to train underlying Grok and xAI models or surfaced in response to queries. Conversation deletion is separate.
Is an X Chat still fully encrypted if I add @Grok?
X says Chat is end-to-end encrypted, but adding @Grok lets X and SpaceXAI access all messages from the time Grok is added until it is removed. Text or images sent to Grok are no longer encrypted.
What kinds of data can X share with xAI?
X lists public posts, related metadata such as engagement and reposts, public Spaces, public profiles, user interests and interactions, plus Grok inputs, interactions, results and some voice inputs, transcripts or translations.
Do I need a paid plan to change these controls?
No purchase is required to use the privacy controls described here. Availability and menu wording can vary by account, region, product experience or app version.

The Bottom Line
Use the controls together: turn off Data Sharing and Grok Personalization, delete existing history, and protect posts when appropriate. Avoid feedback on excluded conversations, keep sensitive information out of Grok, and never add Grok to a Chat that must remain confidential.
