If your Xbox is full and a Game Pass download will not start, free space on the console by uninstalling games you are not playing, or move games to another storage device. A compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card can store and directly run Series X|S games; a USB external drive is useful for storing and transferring games, but it cannot directly run every optimized title.
Why a Game Pass download needs free console storage
Game Pass games use the same game storage as other Xbox titles; there is no separate Game Pass-only storage-management process. When there is not enough room for a download, you can make space by removing an installed game or shifting games to supported external storage. Xbox’s Manage storage on your Xbox console page is the official starting point for managing space.

Choose how to make room
| Option | Best for | Can you play from it? |
|---|---|---|
| Uninstall a game | Freeing space without buying hardware, especially for games you are not currently playing. | No. You must install the game again to play it. |
| Compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card | Adding storage for a Series X|S library you want ready to play. | Xbox Wire describes installing games to the card and playing them directly from it. Microsoft Store specifications list Storage Expansion Card support for Series X|S. |
| USB 3.1 external HDD or SSD | Keeping a larger library stored, or moving games off the console’s internal storage. | Do not assume every Series X|S optimized game can run directly from USB storage; use it as an archive or transfer option where direct play is unsupported. |
Free space by removing games you do not want installed
Start with titles you have finished or are not playing now. Use the console’s storage-management controls to review installed games and apps, then uninstall selected items. Xbox Support also has guidance on uninstalling and reinstalling a game.

Move or archive games on external storage
A USB external drive can help clear internal space without permanently removing a game from your collection: move or copy titles to it, then transfer them back when you want to play a title that cannot run directly from that device. Microsoft lists USB 3.1 external HDD support for Series S, and Xbox Wire describes USB storage for storing and transferring games.
For Series X|S optimized games you want to launch from expanded storage, the Expansion Card is the more direct option. Xbox Wire’s 2020 explanation says players can install games to the card by default, play directly from it, and move or copy titles between local and external storage. Microsoft’s current Series S specifications list Storage Expansion Card support, but check the compatibility of a specific card against your console and its current specifications before buying.

Which option fits your situation?
- You just need one new download: Uninstall something you are not currently playing, then download the desired game.
- You want to keep many games stored but do not need all of them instantly playable: Use a compatible USB external drive as an archive and transfer games back when needed.
- You want more Series X|S games ready to launch from expanded storage: Consider a compatible Xbox Storage Expansion Card, which supports direct play for games installed on it.
Xbox Wire’s storage explainer is from September 2020, so treat it as an explanation of the storage categories, not a current catalog of card models or capacities. The Microsoft Store’s Series S specification page lists support for 1TB Storage Expansion Cards; that is a listed compatibility specification, not a claim that 1TB is the only available capacity.
