How to Manage Face ID for App Sign-In, App Locks, and Security

Learn where to set up Face ID, how to control app sign-in and app locks, and what apps can—and cannot—access about your Face ID data.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use Settings > Face ID & Passcode to set up Face ID, choose which built-in features can use it, and manage compatible app sign-ins. To require authentication just to open an app, use the separate Require Face ID option on the Home Screen. These controls work with your device passcode as an alternate verification method. Apple’s setup and settings guide explains the available options.

Set up Face ID on your iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode and enter your device passcode if asked.
  2. Tap Set Up Face ID, position your face inside the frame, then follow the on-screen directions to complete both scans. Good lighting can help the camera capture your face.
  3. If you cannot complete the requested head movement, choose Accessibility Options during setup and follow the prompts.

After setup, return to Settings > Face ID & Passcode to turn Face ID on or off for supported functions. Options can include unlocking the device, authorizing purchases, Password AutoFill, and compatible app sign-in. A store purchase may still ask for your Apple Account password the first time.

Choose which apps can use Face ID to sign in

Open Settings > Face ID & Passcode > Other Apps to review and change Face ID access for compatible apps. This setting allows an app to request Face ID as a sign-in method; it does not put an extra lock on the app every time you open it.

If a compatible app does not offer Face ID, sign in to the app manually first. Apple notes that some apps require that initial sign-in before Face ID can be used.

Require Face ID to open an app

App locking is a separate system feature from app sign-in access. On a supported device, touch and hold an eligible app on the Home Screen, choose Require Face ID, then authenticate. Depending on the device, the system may instead offer Touch ID or the passcode. Once you quit a locked app, opening it again requires authentication.

For some eligible downloaded apps, the same controls let you hide the app. Apple excludes certain preinstalled or default apps from locking or hiding; eligibility depends on the app. A lock or hidden status applies only on that device and does not sync through iCloud. See Apple’s instructions for locking or hiding apps for current eligibility details.

Understand the Face ID privacy boundary

Apple says Face ID data is encrypted and protected by the Secure Enclave. Its technical documentation states: “Face ID data doesn’t leave your device, is never available to iOS or iPadOS, apps, or Apple, and is never backed up to iCloud or anywhere else.” In supported apps, “Apps are only notified regarding whether the authentication is successful.” In other words, an app can receive an authentication result, not the Face ID data associated with your enrolled face. Apple’s Face ID technology overview describes these safeguards.

Set whether Face ID requires your attention

When Require Attention for Face ID is on, Face ID unlocks only when your eyes are open and you are looking at the screen. Apple describes this as an added security measure. Change it under Settings > Accessibility > Face ID & Attention. Accessibility setup can affect defaults, so check the setting on your own device rather than assuming it is enabled.
