To make Windows 11 search faster without indexing more than you need, open Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, then choose Classic under Find my files and add or remove only the folders you actually search. Classic indexes Documents, Pictures, Music, and the desktop by default. Enhanced indexes the entire PC, including user folders and files, which gives wider coverage but uses more system resources.
Decide between Classic and Enhanced first
The mode you pick sets the ceiling for everything else. Microsoft’s indexing guidance describes two options under Find my files, and they behave differently enough that the choice matters more than any individual folder setting.

| Mode | What gets indexed | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Classic (default scope) | Documents, Pictures, Music, and the desktop | A focused scope with lower background activity. Folders outside those locations are not covered unless you add them. |
| Classic with added folders | The defaults plus folders you select under Customize search locations | Covers scattered work folders, such as a project drive or a second data folder, without indexing the whole PC. |
| Enhanced | The entire PC, including user folders and files | The most complete results, with higher resource use. Microsoft’s privacy page notes that searching the entire PC may affect battery life and CPU consumption. |
Most readers who keep work in a few known places do best with Classic plus added folders. Enhanced suits people who cannot predict where a file ended up and accept the extra background work on their device. Sources: Microsoft’s indexing guide and Windows Search and Privacy.

If you keep Classic, you can control the folder list directly. Use this sequence:
#1 Best Overall
- 1.1 GHz (boost up to 2.4GHz) Intel Celeron N5030 Quad-Core
- Open Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows.
- Under Find my files, confirm that Classic is selected.
- Select Customize search locations, then select Modify.
- In the Indexed locations list, check the folders you search often, such as an external drive folder or a synced project directory. Clear any location whose contents you never need to find by search.
- Select OK to save. Windows then begins indexing the new scope.
Excluding a location removes it from future search results only where indexing is the source of those results. Files you already have in another location stay where they are; only the catalog changes.
Control whether search reads file contents
Location and content are separate decisions. A folder can be indexed while its documents still appear only by file name. Microsoft’s guidance describes the per-file-type control like this:
Rank #2
- 256 GB SSD of storage.
- Multitasking is easy with 16GB of RAM
- Equipped with a blazing fast Core i5 2.00 GHz processor.
- Open the classic Indexing Options dialog from Control Panel.
- Select Advanced, then open the File Types tab.
- Select a file extension, then choose Index Properties and File Contents for types where you need to search inside text, or Index Properties Only for types where names and metadata are enough.
With Index Properties Only, a file name search still finds the file, but a search for words inside that file type will not match its text. Set content indexing only for types you genuinely search by text, because every extra content type adds to the index.

Allow time for the index to settle
Changes do not take effect instantly. Microsoft says the first indexing run can take up to a couple of hours. After that, indexing continues in the background and updates changed data. Its guidance does not give a machine-specific estimate, so the time depends on the number and size of the files in your selected locations and on your PC. Faster search is the purpose of indexing, but Microsoft does not provide benchmarks that quantify the speed gain for any particular drive or file collection.

Understand the cost of broader indexing
Every indexed location adds to two things: the index size and the background work needed to keep it current.
- Index size. Microsoft gives a rule of thumb that the index is less than 10 percent of the size of the indexed files. Its support page warns that many very small files, such as files under 4 KB, or source-code files can push that proportion considerably higher. The page does not state a date for this figure.
- Power and processor use. Enhanced mode indexes more data and can affect battery life and CPU consumption, so laptops on battery are the most likely place to notice it.
- Trust in installed apps. Microsoft notes that installed apps may be able to read data in the index, so install apps only from trusted sources.
Semantic indexing on Copilot+ PCs
On Copilot+ PCs, Microsoft describes semantic indexing alongside traditional indexing for supported document and image types. The semantic-index data is stored locally on the PC. Microsoft recommends keeping a Copilot+ PC plugged in during the initial indexing, and you can check indexing status in Searching Windows. This describes Microsoft’s Copilot+ PC feature. It is not a general feature of every Windows 11 PC, and Microsoft’s privacy statement limits the local-storage claim to the semantic-index data it describes rather than all search activity.

Troubleshoot missing or incomplete results
When a file you know exists does not appear, work through these checks in order:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Confirm that the folder appears in the Indexed locations list and that its parent folder is not excluded.
- Wait for the first indexing run to finish, and check whether the indexing status in Searching Windows still reports activity.
- Confirm the file type is set to Index Properties and File Contents if you are searching for text inside it.
- Run the Indexer troubleshooter from Settings > Privacy & security > Searching Windows, which Microsoft points to for search problems on Windows 11.
- For classic Outlook search only, Microsoft’s separate Outlook guidance covers checking Outlook’s indexing status, selected data files, and whether the Windows Search service is running. See Troubleshooting Outlook search issues.
Microsoft’s indexing guidance is dated only loosely and does not name a specific Windows 11 build, and settings labels can change with updates. If the labels above differ on your PC, look for the same sections under Searching Windows and Indexing Options.
For the official workflow, see Microsoft’s search indexing guide.
