To turn a Windows 11 app execution alias on or off, open Settings, search for App execution aliases, then switch the relevant entry. If you want website links to open in an installed app—or to stay in your browser—search Settings for Apps for websites instead. These are separate controls for different things.
How do I turn an app execution alias on or off?
- Open Settings.
- Search Settings for App execution aliases.
- Open the matching result and switch the relevant app or alias on or off.
The list depends on which installed apps have registered aliases. An execution alias is a short name Windows can use to start an app without requiring its full executable path. If a command starts the wrong app, disabling the relevant alias may address the conflict. Microsoft documents disabling a packaged app’s AppExecutionAlias entry on this page: Microsoft’s app-launch documentation.

Turning an alias off disables that entry; it does not uninstall the app. If Settings labels or navigation differ on your Windows 11 release, use Settings search rather than relying on a fixed breadcrumb.

Is Apps for websites the same as App execution aliases?
No. Apps for websites controls whether supported website links can open in an associated installed app. If that app is not installed, the website opens in the browser. It does not control short names used to launch apps. Search Settings for Apps for websites to find this separate page. Microsoft lists ms-settings:appsforwebsites as its direct Settings URI in its Settings URI reference.

Which Windows setting should I use?
| Setting | What it controls | Use it when |
|---|---|---|
| App execution aliases | Short names that start an app without entering its full executable path. | A command or alias launches an app unexpectedly, or you want to enable or disable an alias. Microsoft documentation |
| Apps for websites | Whether supported website links open in an associated installed app. | A website link should open in an app or remain in the browser. Microsoft documentation |
| Default apps | Which app handles particular file types or link types. | A file or link opens in the wrong default application. Find it under Settings > Apps > Default apps. Microsoft Support |
What if the setting or app is missing?
- The alias page does not show the app: The available entries depend on installed apps and the aliases they register. The cited Microsoft documentation does not establish a universal list for every Windows 11 installation.
- You cannot find the page by browsing menus: Search Settings for its exact name; menu labels and navigation can vary between releases.
- A website still opens in the browser: Apps for websites applies to supported links and an associated installed app. It is different from choosing a default app for a file type or link type.
- You changed an alias but the app remains installed: That is expected. The control disables the alias entry; it is not an uninstall option.
