Manage Android app permissions from Chromebook Settings, then inspect storage separately to see what is using local disk space. The Android permission called Storage controls an app’s access to the Chromebook’s Downloads location; it does not represent all Android app data or every attached drive. Menu labels and available controls can vary by Chromebook and ChromeOS release.
Change an Android app’s permissions
- On your Chromebook, select the time in the bottom-right corner, then select Settings.
- Go to Apps > Manage Google Play preferences. In the Android settings window, open Apps & notifications > Permission manager.
- Select a permission category to see which apps are allowed or not allowed to use it. Choose an app to change its permission.
This is Google’s documented route, but some Chromebooks show different screens or do not offer every permission control. If you cannot find a setting, search in Chromebook Settings or check with your device administrator. See Google’s Android app and permission instructions.

What the Storage permission controls
For Android apps on a Chromebook, the Storage permission concerns reading and downloading files in the Chromebook’s Downloads location. You can change it on the app’s permissions page by turning off Storage. This is not a control for deleting the app’s data, and it should not be treated as permission to or from every file on an attached drive. Google’s Chromebook Android app guide describes this permission.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFind Android app files and manage external storage
To browse files associated with Android apps, open the Files app and look under My files > Play files. You can show additional Play folders from the Files app menu. These files are distinct from the Downloads folder and from the Android app’s internal data.

To let Google Play apps read and write files on a removable storage device, open Settings > System preferences > Storage management > External storage preference, then turn the relevant device on or off. This ChromeOS setting is separate from an app’s Android permissions. Google documents the setting but does not promise compatibility for every Chromebook, drive, or app; if an app cannot see a drive, check both the ChromeOS preference and the app’s own controls. Files and folders on an external device are visible to anyone who uses that device. Details are in Google’s guide to files and external storage on Chromebooks.
Check what is using Chromebook storage
Open Settings > System preferences > Storage management to review remaining space and usage categories. Google lists these areas:
Rank #2
- Storage: 16GB Flash Memory
- OS: Chrome OS
- Screen Size: 11.6"
- Downloads and offline files
- Browsing data
- Android storage, which includes Android apps and their data
- Other users
Use the category breakdown to decide what to remove. Changing an app permission does not itself free disk space. Google’s storage guidance recommends these options:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Delete files you no longer need, especially from Downloads.
- Clear browsing data and download history if you are comfortable removing them.
- Uninstall Android or Chrome apps you no longer use.
- Remove extra local user accounts if they are no longer needed.
Low disk space can interfere with downloading files, loading webpages, saving settings, adding accounts, and using Android apps. A Chromebook may automatically remove some downloaded files, browsing data, cache, or unused accounts when space is low. Review storage categories before deleting anything so you understand what data will be lost.

Check whether your Chromebook supports Android apps
Google Play is available on only some Chromebooks. Keep the Chromebook up to date, then look for Manage Google Play preferences in Settings. If that option is missing, the device may not support Android apps. Some Android apps are also incompatible with some Chromebooks, and work or school administrators may restrict Play Store access or app downloads. See Google’s Android app eligibility and setup guide.

Turning off Google Play Store on a Chromebook erases Android app data and settings from that device. It is not a harmless way to reset permissions or troubleshoot one app. First change the specific permission or remove only the files or app data you intend to lose. Google states the data-loss warning in its Chromebook Android app guide.
