Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteManage remote-work security as a system: set rules before granting access, verify who and what is connecting, limit access to the information each person needs, keep devices protected, and make suspicious activity easy to report. A VPN alone cannot replace those controls.
What does secure remote-work management cover?
Remote work involves more than a connection from a home computer. NIST’s Guide to Enterprise Telework, Remote Access, and Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) Security treats the remote-access service, communications, organization-issued and personal devices, and the information stored or accessed on them as parts of the security picture. Its guidance is to protect those components against expected threats and establish policies for their use.

That makes remote security a management responsibility shared by IT, managers, workers, and third parties. Technology helps enforce the rules, but the organization still needs to decide who may work remotely, which devices and data are permitted, what safeguards are required, and what happens when access is no longer appropriate.
How should an organization set remote-work rules?
Write the policy before expanding access. It should be specific enough for a worker and a manager to know what is allowed, and for IT to check whether the conditions are met.

- People and roles: identify who may work remotely, which roles may handle sensitive information, and who approves access.
- Devices: define which organization-issued or personal devices are permitted and the minimum safeguards they must meet.
- Information: state what data workers may access or store on each permitted device, and identify any data that requires a more restrictive arrangement.
- Access methods: name approved ways to reach business services, including when organizational VPN use is required.
- Reporting: provide a clear route for reporting suspicious messages, unexpected sign-in prompts, lost devices, or other possible security incidents.
- Third parties: document how contractors and service providers are assessed, what they may access, and who removes their access when the work ends.
Keep the rules aligned with the organization’s risk, sector, jurisdiction, and technology. General security guidance does not settle local requirements for employee monitoring, data retention, privacy, or BYOD; obtain appropriate legal and privacy advice for those decisions.
How do you protect remote access and business accounts?
Require MFA where access matters
Require multifactor authentication (MFA) for remote access, email, file storage, and other key business services. Start with administrator accounts and people who handle sensitive information, then cover the broader workforce. Where the identity provider and services support it, prefer phishing-resistant MFA. CISA’s guidance supports phishing-resistant MFA in general; a physical security key is one possible implementation, but confirm that it works with the organization’s identity provider and the services employees use.

Limit what a successful login can reach
Authentication establishes that a person has signed in; authorization determines what that person can do. Review both. Give workers and vendors only the permissions their current tasks require, rather than treating a valid login as permission to browse every system or file. Revisit access when roles change and remove it when a person or provider no longer needs it.

Decide whether a VPN is required for each use
Tell workers plainly when organizational VPN use is mandatory and which services or circumstances the rule covers. Do not treat “uses a VPN” as a complete security policy: the organization still needs to control identities, device eligibility, permissions, and incident response. NIST SP 800-46 Rev. 2 covers multiple remote-access technologies and calls for security based on expected threats; it does not establish one architecture as best for every organization.

How should devices and vendors be secured?
Check device requirements before access
Define minimum endpoint requirements and verify that they are present before granting remote access. Include clear expectations for keeping the operating system and security tools current. Establish who checks compliance, how exceptions are handled, and what happens if a device falls out of compliance. A policy that is never checked cannot reliably serve as an access gate.
Apply the same discipline to third parties
Assess a vendor’s or service provider’s devices and access needs before connecting them to organizational systems. Scope permissions to the specific task, and set an owner responsible for reviewing and ending access. The FTC’s business guidance warns about remote-access computers without appropriate endpoint security and excessive access. In its 2017 remote-access guidance, the FTC put the principle plainly: “Your network is only as secure as the least safe device that connects to it.”

Choose BYOD or organization-issued devices by risk
There is no universal choice that fits every team. Compare the options against the work and data involved, and document how each decision will be enforced.
Recommended Free Tools
| Decision factor | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Data sensitivity | What information will the device access or store, and does that sensitivity permit the proposed device arrangement? |
| Device control and updates | Can the organization establish and verify required safeguards and keep software current? |
| Identity and access | Can the device and access method work with required MFA and appropriately limited permissions? |
| Monitoring and response | Can the organization detect and respond to a suspected incident without exceeding its legal or privacy obligations? |
| User burden and cost | Can workers use the arrangement reliably, and can the organization support and administer it? |
Apply the same factors when comparing VPN-based access with another remote-access architecture. The right decision depends on the organization’s threats, technology, and ability to enforce and support its controls—not on a blanket claim that one approach is always safer.

What should remote employees do to protect company information?
Give workers a short, practical set of instructions that matches organizational policy. NIST’s worker-facing telework guidance emphasizes following the organization’s rules, securing Wi-Fi and devices, using the organizational VPN when required, keeping devices updated, and reporting suspicious activity. A useful employee checklist is:
- Use only approved devices and access methods for work information.
- Secure home Wi-Fi as directed by the organization, and use its VPN when policy requires it.
- Lock the device with a strong PIN or another supported sign-in method when it is unattended.
- Install operating-system and security updates promptly under the organization’s update policy.
- Use MFA for covered services and do not approve unexpected authentication prompts.
- Report suspicious messages, unexpected prompts, or a lost device promptly through the named reporting channel.
Include social engineering in worker training. NIST’s telework guidance warns that attackers may exploit remote-work contexts; employees should know how to verify unusual requests and where to escalate them rather than guessing whether they are legitimate.
How can managers put the policy into operation?
- Classify the work and data. Identify roles, sensitive information, and systems that may be accessed remotely. Use those risks to determine which arrangements need stricter safeguards.
- Set the access conditions. Document eligible users, approved devices and access methods, required MFA, device requirements, and permission boundaries.
- Verify before enabling access. Confirm that the person is authorized and that the device meets the organization’s requirements before providing access to business services.
- Explain the worker’s actions. Provide concise instructions for Wi-Fi, device locking, updates, VPN use where required, MFA, and reporting suspicious activity.
- Review changes and exceptions. Reassess access when a worker changes roles, a vendor’s task ends, or a device no longer meets requirements. Assign an owner to resolve exceptions rather than letting them become permanent by default.
- Make reporting actionable. Give workers a known contact or reporting channel, explain what details to include, and ensure someone is responsible for receiving and escalating reports.
Which guidance should organizations use?
NIST SP 800-46 Revision 2, published in July 2016, is the core technical reference for enterprise telework, remote access, BYOD, and related policy development. It supersedes Revision 1, but its publication date means organizations should check for a newer final revision before relying on technical specifics. The FTC’s 2017 business guidance adds practical warnings about endpoint security and excessive remote access. These U.S. government sources provide general security practices; they do not determine an organization’s jurisdiction-specific legal duties or select a universal product or architecture.
